Florence Nightingale was the first great nurse in the world. She was born in a rich family on May 12, 1820. She was very kind-hearted and enjoyed helping others, especially people who were sick. 65 She thought that helping patients was both a duty and a pleasure. So she decided to be a nurse when she was 24. But her parents didn’t agree. 66 Her family had lots of money, so they thought it was not necessary for her to work. Besides, nurses were not well respected(尊敬) at that time. But Nightingale didn’t change her mind. She believed that her dream would come true. Later she went to Germany and France to learn to be a nurse. At that time there were no nursing schools. 67所以她不得不学习大量的护理知识。

During the war she went to the front hospitals to look after soldiers. 68她为病人买了衣服、药品还有食物。She always took good care of the soldiers with a lamp in her hands at night and soldiers called her “The lady with the lamp”.

After the war. Nightingale opened the world’s first nursing school. She went on serving the others through her work as a nurse.

In 1910, she died quietly in her sleep at the age of ninety. 69 In 1974, her birthday became International Nurses’ Day because of the great love and help she gave to people.

  • 24、“Do you think you can win this competition, Caroline?” Mrs Winterbottom asked her daughter.

“I don’t know, Mum. But I will do my best.”

“I know, my dear. Just remember that your father pays a lot of money for the horse. And a lot of money for the stables. And a lot of money for the Riding Club.”

“I know, Mum. I know. I will do my best. I really will.”

Caroline always did her best, but it was never enough. She was a good rider, and Applewind was a great horse. She went to Sunshine Stables to ride Applewind. And she never missed a competition. But Sophie Craig was always better than her. She won all of the show jumping competitions, and her Blossom was everybody’s darling. Everyone loved them.

“If you really want to win, you will win,” Caroline’s dad said. He said the same thing before every competition. “It is the same thing with my work. I want to win, so I win. Life is about winning. You have to learn that, Caroline!”

Caroline sighed. “Dad,” she said. “I want to win too. But Sophie is too good.”

“You have to be better than her,” Mr Winterbottom said, “If you don’t win, Caroline, I’ll sell your horse. No trophy(奖杯), no horse! When is the next competition?”

“In five days, Dad,” Caroline said.

“I want you to win it, Caroline. If you win the competition, you can keep Applewind!”

“What’s the matter, Sis?” It was Fred, Caroline’s brother.

    “Applewind again?”

“It’s not Applewind, but it’s me,” Caroline said. “Dad says that she’ll be traded to another stable if I don’t win the next competition. But Sophie Craig always wins. She’s too good. What can I do?”

Fred was sorry for his sister. He wanted to help her. But how? Caroline was right. Sophie was good. And Blossom was great, Caroline worked hard, but Sophie also worked hard. Fred didn’t know what to do. He sat down in his favourite armchair and fell asleep. Suddenly he woke up with a jump.

“Sleep! That’s the answer. Dad’s sleeping pills!”

He went to the bathroom. A minute later he had five sleeping pills in his hand.
