24、 The teacher stood before his class of 30 students and was going to hand out the final exam papers. “I know how hard you have all worked to get ready for this test.” he said. “And because I know you are all able to understand these questions. I am ready to offer a B to anyone who would prefer not to take the test.’’
A number of students jumped up to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the rest students and said. “Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last chance. ”Two more students decided to go. Seven students stayed. The teacher then handed out the papers. There were only three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have received an A in this class. Keep believing in yourself.
I never had a teacher who gave a test like that, but I think that it is a test that any teacher could and should give. Students who do not have confidence in what they have learned are B students at most.
The same is true for students in real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both successes and failures. They have learned life’s lessons whether from school education or from events in their lives, and have become better people. Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now and you realize that you have some limits(局限). However, there is nothing you can’t do or learn to be. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰)said, “We do not conquer the mountain, but ourselves.”

25、I was not a lucky child. When I was 3 years old, my parents found I was deaf. They talked with many doctors but it didn’t help. They wanted me to live like other kids. From the third grade, they put me in a school far from home where all of my classmates had normal (正常的) hearing. So I was the only deaf child there. From the first day, the other kids often laughed at me and called me names because of my hearing aid. I didn’t like my new school. My problem was not only from classmates. I also had trouble with most of my schoolwork.
One morning, in her math class, Mrs. Jordan asked us a question. She was a strict woman with a voice that went through the walls of her little classroom, and you could even hear it out of the classroom.
I read her lips (嘴唇) hard and got an answer. Maybe that was the right one! I raised up my hand and heard Mrs. Jordan call out my name. I stood up, but became afraid again. I could even hear the laugh from some of my classmates. Nervously I answered her question, I would never forget what happened next.
Mrs. Jordan smiled at me and said, “THAT’S RIGHT, STEPHEN!”
For the first time, I became a star. I was so excited! The three words changed (改变) my life. From that day I told myself that I would make a place in this world. It would be difficult and hard, but I knew I could make it, just like answering the question in class.

26、
When Mrs. Klein told her first graders to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful, she thought how little these children, who lived in a terrible neighborhood, actually had to be thankful for. Since it was Thanksgiving Day, she knew that most of the class would draw pictures of turkeys (火鸡) or of Thanksgiving tables with lots of food.
What made Mrs. Klein surprised was Douglas’s picture. Douglas was so shy and likely to be found away from the others as they went outside for games. Douglas’s drawing was simply this:
A hand, clearly, but whose hand? The class was attracted by his picture. “I think it must be the hand of his mum or dad that brings us food,” said one student.
“A farmer,” said another, “because they grow the turkeys.”
“It looks more like a policeman, and they protect us.” “I think,” said Lavinia, who was always so serious, “that it is supposed to be all the hands that help us, but Douglas could only draw one of them.”
Mrs. Klein was very happy to see that the class showed so much interest in Douglas’ picture. When she had the others at work on another project, she went over to him and asked whose hand it was.
Douglas answered in a very low voice, “It’s yours, Teacher.”
Then Mrs. Klein remembered that she had taken Douglas by the hand from time to time; she often did that with the children. But that it should have meant so much to Douglas …
Perhaps, she thought, this was her Thanksgiving, and everybody’s Thanksgiving—not the material things we receive, but the small ways that we give something to others.
【1】When did the story happen?
A.On Thanksgiving Day. B.On Teacher’s Day.
C.After Thanksgiving Day. D.Before Christmas Eve.
【2】Douglas drew a picture of hand.
A.his mum’s B.a farmer’s C.his teacher’s D.a policeman’s
【3】What does the writer want to tell us?
A.Thanksgiving Day is popular. B.Being a good teacher is important.
C.Painting is necessary in our life. D.Giving is more meaningful than receiving.
27、 I love my laptop computer as it holds all of my writing and thoughts. But I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices (设备) and truly communicate with others.
Once, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers. I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom, I have a rule — no laptops, iPads, phones, etc. When students were told my rule in the class, some of them were not happy.
Most students believe that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology. There’s a bit of truth to that. Some students think that I am anti-technology. There’s no truth to that at all. I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can teach my students well.
The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversations and truly exchange ideas. I want students to dig deep within themselves for outstanding ideas. I want them to push each other to think differently.
I’ve been teaching my history class in this way for many years and students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom.
I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about technology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change, I’m sticking to my plan. A few hours of technology-free conversation is just too sweet to give up.
【1】What were some of the students in the history class unhappy with?
A.the course material B.others’ misuse of technology
C.the writer’s class rule D.discussion topics
【2】According to the writer, the use of new technology in the classroom may .
A.help students to better understand historical topics B.keep students from doing independent thing
C.encourage students to have deep conversations D.lead students to misuse the technology.

A.The writer thinks highly of technology-free conversation in his class.
B.The writer will change his teaching plan soon.
C.The writer will give up teaching history.
D.The writer won’t hold on to his belief.
【4】What does the writer wants to tell us?
A.Technology has different influences in different classes in college.
B.Technology makes it difficult to have true communication in class.
C.History classes can help students to develop their deep thinking.
D.It is time for him to give up his teaching method in history class.
