  • 25、Taking public transportation in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely see people reading during their free time.

Are people’s attitudes toward reading different here? Not really. Data (数据) released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e-books to regular books.

However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the US than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature. From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三国演义》) to the modern science-fiction epic The Three-body Problem (《三体》), Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works.

Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not feel like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely (肯定) have to read more and do more homework that US students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time.

But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own personal beliefs and attitudes.

Where will your next book take you?

【1】According to Paragraph 1, What do we know about people in the US?

A.Many of them have the habit of reading.

B.Most people take public transportation to work.

B.Chinese people prefer e-books to regular books now.

C.Chinese people’s attitudes toward reading have changed a lot.

D.Chinese people love buying more books from the online bookshops.

【3】The author believes that reading is less popular in China because ________.

A.it’s hard to choose what to read

B.Chinese people prefer to read textbooks

C.peoples childhood experiences may influence their reading habits

D.Chinese people already read enough books during their childhoods

【4】Which of the following is the best title?

    A.Reading is fun.

    B.Read on the way.

    C.Good reading habits.

    D.Learn to love reading

  • 26、Is the Mobile Phone a Must-have for Teenagers?

Next time you're in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their mobile phones. I can tell you now that it is probably more than half, whether you're on public transport, in a café or simply walking down the street. With the development of technology, we can now do almost anything on the mobile phones. How does the use of mobile phones affect(影响) the young? Do they really need mobile phones or not? Some British parents, teachers and teenagers give their opinions on this subject.

Parents want their kids to be safe. Are teenagers safer with a mobile phone or without? William, a parent of two kids, says, "The great thing about my kids having mobile phones is that I can keep in touch with them. The worst thing about teenagers having phones is that some young people use them to send impolitemessages to each other." Some parents have rules about their children's mobile phone and internet usage. If they break the rules, their phones will be kept by their parents.

In the UK, students can take their mobile phones to school, but they are not allowed to use them in class. Some teachers complain(抱怨) that students don’t always follow the rules. They don't listen carefully in class because they are using their phones to surf the internet, chat with friends or so on. As for the students, most of them think phones are part of their lives. They can keep in touch with family and friends, and they can take photos, keep important information and surf the internet, which is very convenient(方便). Some consider phones as a kind of fashion(时尚) and they don't want others to see them as "out" or "different".

It’s true that mobile phones have become a symbol of the modern life. This form of technology makes teenagers' life much more convenient, but if teenagers depend too much on them, it can lead to serious problems. Increasingly scientists are saying that everyone needs a break from mobile phones —put them away and experience “the real life”. In fact it can be very easy—next time when you go out with friends, put all of your phones in the middle of the table. Whoever touches his phone first has to pay the bill!

Indeed, the convenience brought by mobile phones is great, but don't let your phone become more important than the “real”people in your “real”life.

1The mobile phones will probably be kept by parents if the teenagers________.

    A. go out with classmates and friends and pay the bill

    B. search for a lot of important information and keep it

    C. take them to school and look up new words after class

    D. send impolitemessages and surf the Internet too much

2According to the passage which of the following is true?

    A. All students consider mobile phones as a kind of fashion.

    B. Teachers allow students to use mobile phones in class in the UK.

    C. Parents often count how many young people are using mobile phones.

    D. More and more scientists think people need a break from mobile phones.

3What does the writer mainly want to tell us?

    A. Schools should stop students from taking their phones to school.

    B. The mobile phone is the most important invention in modern life.

    C. Mobile phones are useful but teenagers shouldn’t totally depend on them.

    D. Talking with friends on mobile phones is better than doing it face to face.

  • 27、For as long as I can remember, seniors have attracted too little attention from society as a whole. For example, people may shrink physically as they get older and have a higher incidence(发生率) of falls, but how many people have thought about buying a more comfortable and stable chair for their elderly parents?

We spend generously on our children, such as hiring a nanny to take care of them .When we look for a nanny for our baby, we believe that someone who charges 8.000 yuan must be better than a person who charges 5, 000 yuan because they have a better grasp of how to interact with babies, But when we look for someone to take care of our elderly parents, we usually keep the cost as low as possible, We just want to make sure that caregivers will prepare three meals a day for our seniors, but we don’t take their psychological needs into consideration.

The differences in attitudes are obvious. However, we are not yet old, so perhaps it's hard for us to understand the bitterness of the elderly: regression(衰退)in health, a handful of pills every day, not being able to catch up with developments in the digital age, and the disappearance of the old streets and favorite restaurants from the good old days. Those are the kinds of lives they live and we may even live through something similar in the decades to come.

If we think about how we want to be treated when we grow old, we should start the changes today. Because the elderly were once the backbone of society and made huge contributions, they should enjoy the fruits of the country's development as well

1What situation might old people face according to the text?

    A. A high and stable income.   B. Physical inconvenience.

    C. Much concern from the public.   D. Short of favorite food and fruits.

2Which of the following can replace the underlined word “nanny” in paragraph 2?

    A. home teacher   B. coach   C. storyteller   D. babysitter

3Why is it difficult for us to understand the bitterness of old people?

    A. Because we fail to catch up with their development.

    B. Because we are sharing a similar lifestyle with them

    C. Because we are too young to experience their condition

    D. Because we have spent much money looking after them

4What does the writer think of the elderly?

    A. They can make greater contributions.   B. They are worth the attention from society

    C. They should start to change themselves   D. They need a handful of pills every day.
