二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Editor: Today our topic is part-time job. Are they good for school children or not?

Headmaster: Certainly not. Children have got two full-time jobs already: growing up and going to school. Part-time jobs make them so tired that they fall asleep in class.

Mrs. White:  I agree. I know school hours are short, but theres homework as well, and children need a lot of sleep.

Mr. White: Young children, perhaps some boys, stay at school until theyre eighteen or nineteen. A part-time job cant harm them. In fact, its good for them. They earn their pocket money instead of asking their parents for it. And they see something of the world outside school.

Businessman: Youre quite right. Boys learn a lot from a part-time job. And we mustnt forget that some families need the extra money. If the pupils didnt take part-time jobs, they couldnt stay at school.

  • 27、   One winter Sunday my little sister Colleen and I built the greatest snowman ever We gave him a traditional carrot nose cool hat comfortable scarf and gloves on the end of his stick arms He was a masterpiece(杰作).

The next morning when looking outside we smiled lovingly at him over our meal We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school A lot of kids went past our house so he was the hot topic at our school that morning My sister and I generously shared our professional(专业的) snowman-building suggestions and techniques with our classmates

The day dragged on until finally we could rush home But as our yard came into sight we saw something that wasn't right The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere Worst of all the snowman's once-proud carrot nose lay half-eaten

What had happened We knew only one thingour snowman would rise againAnd so we rebuilt him The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪). For the rest of the weekthe destruction was repeated daily Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman fallen apart and then we would build him up again

By Saturday morning we had a plan We borrowed a really big bucket(桶) from Mom filled it withwater and left it outside The next morning it was frozen solid We packed snow all around the ice block for the base of the snowman Then we built the other parts of it once again The trap was set and wewaited for the snowman bullies(破坏者) to come

Monday morning looking out of the window we soon saw what we were waiting for A group of fifth-grade bullies came up to our snowman and sneered(轻蔑地笑). Taking their places on all sides they pulled back their legs to deliver strong kicks But when their feet hit the hard ice block sneers turned to surprise then pain and then tears

We came close to feeling sorry for them but they were too funny as they jumped away holding their damaged feet We started laughing and couldn't stop Could it be that the snowman was laughing too

  • 28、There’s no doubt that man is the smartest. But do you know what other animals are smart, too?

    Dolphins

Dolphins are very smart. Most of the “tricks” they’re taught to do are actually behavior they would engage in on their own. They love to play, race and generally enjoy their life to the fullest. They speak a language we have yet to completely understand and like all civilized creatures, dolphins’ mothers always provide their young children with guidance and possibly, love.

    Great apes

The great ape family primarily consists of gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. Their brain chemistry is so similar to humans’ that NASA once used chimpanzees in place of astronauts during many dangerous missions. Gorillas have been taught sign language and orangutans exist in complex familial relationships.

    Elephants

Everyone has heard the phrase “an elephant never forgets”. Elephants establish long-term friendships, recognizing and remembering their friends years later. If an elephant comes upon a fallen friend, it has even been known to feel sad.

    Parrots

As proved by this list, parrots are very smart. They are also the only animals listed that can actually hold a conversation. Some parrots know hundreds of words by imitating humans. The birds are also capable of remembering words and using them intelligently in response to situations.

  • 29、Thirteen-year-old Sean Nichols plays basketball, rides horses, and competes in Taekwondo. That surprises some people because Sean uses a wheelchair.

“If someone has a physical disability, they can still do things that other kids can,” Sean explains. “They either have to do it in a different way, or it’s just a bit harder.” He’s been sharing that message with kids and adults in his community since he was three.

When Sean was a baby, his family learned that he has a spinal condition that makes walking difficult. As he started school each year, he and his mom would talk with his class to help the kids understand why Sean uses a wheelchair. He now talks with kids in younger grades and answers their questions himself.

He also speaks at a nearby university each year and works with people who are studying physical therapy. He helps them understand what it’s like to live with a disability and learn how to treat kids with challenges like his. “It’s great helping people who are going to help other kids down the line,” Sean says.

Sean finds lots of ways to increase disability awareness, including through events at school and in Scouts. He and his coaches demonstrate wheelchair basketball, then observers get to try out a chair. They see how much arm strength it takes. “It’s funny to see all the people say, ‘Oh, this is going to be easy’,” Sean says. “Then after, they take back what they said!” If kids want to race, Sean will race them. At times he goes backward—and still wins!

Sean hopes to change how people with disabilities are seen. “My goal is, if a person later sees someone with a disability, they see a person,” he says, “like themselves.”

【1】According to the passage, which of the following words best describe Sean Nichols?

    A.Inspiring and helpful.

    B.Devoted and outgoing.

    C.Confident and ambitious.

    D.Funny and committed.

【2】What do we know about Sean?

A.Sean was not optimistic about his disability.

B.Sean enjoyed talking with younger kids about their disability.

C.Sean contributed greatly to arousing people’s awareness of disability.

D.Sean ran so fast that he never lost race though he sometimes started backward.

【3】What is the main purpose of the passage?

    A.To remember a tough hero.

    B.To encourage disabled people.

    C.To introduce an inspiring person.

D.To increase people’s awareness of disability.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. 6%

The next time you’re riding a subway or bus, pay attention to your fellow passengers. Chances are you’ll see plenty of them with their heads down, tapping the screens of their tablets or 1 on their smartphones. While these folks may be making good use of their time by staying 2, their bodies are paying a heavy price for such convenience.

As hand-held devices such as smartphones and tablets are becoming more common, users are reporting some new 3 problems. Florida chiropractor (脊椎按摩师) Dean Fishman began noticing an increased number of his patients 4 of neck and shoulder pain. He traced these 5 to the overuse of hand-held devices, specifically the action of bending the neck, and created the term “Text Neck.” As if the painful symptoms weren’t bad enough, Fishman warns that an untreated case of Text Neck could lead to permanent spinal (脊柱的) damage. He founded the Text Neck Institute in an effort to treat and educate those suffering from Text Neck. Treatments offered there include chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy and exercise planning.

In order to avoid or reduce the possibility of getting Text Neck, use the following basic principles:

Avoid awkward positioning. Don’t strain (滥用) your neck, and stay aware of how your body is positioned in relation to the device.

Take frequent 6 when using any kind of mobile device.

When using a tablet, use a case that can back up the device at comfortable viewing angle.

For those who simply can’t take their eyes off their devices, there is an ironic twist – downloading a special app(应用程序)could help. Dr. Fishman has released an app called the Text Neck Indicator App, which measures the angle of your smartpphone. When the angle is appropriate, a green light appears in the upper corner of your screen. But when the angle puts you at risk for neck strain, the light turns red, obliging you to adjust your angle.
