二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Malaria(疟疾) is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite (寄生虫). People with malaria often experience fever, and flu-like illness. Left untreated, they may die. A new study suggests that some homemade soups might help fight malaria.

Jake Baum of Imperial College London led the research. He asked children at a London school to bring in home-made clear soups that their families would make to treat a fever. The children were from many different cultural backgrounds. And the soups were then given to the parasite that created 99.7 percent of malaria cases in Africa.

Of the 56 soups tested, five were more than 50 percent effective in containing the growth of the parasite. Two were as effective as one drug now used to treat malaria. And four soups were more than 50 percent effective in preventing parasites from aging to the point when they could infect (感染) mosquitoes that spread the disease. The soups came from families from different places, including Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They had several main ingredients (成分), including chicken, beef and green vegetables. Baum said the vegetarian soups showed similar results to the soups with meat.

Baum and his team reported their results recently in the publication Archives of Disease in Childhood. “When we started getting soups that worked - in the lab under very limited conditions - we were really happy and excited,” Baum said. Baum also added that it was unclear which foods made the soups effective against malaria. “If we were serious about going back and finding the ingredients, like good scientists, we’d have to do it in a better way,” he said.

Baum said his aim was in part to show children that scientific research can turn a herbal (草本的) cure into a man-made medicine. Now the drugs that treat the disease are becoming useless for more and more people, and about 400,000 people are killed by the disease every year. That means scientists will have to find new   drugs.

1What can we learn about malaria from the passage?

    A.It can be easily recognized.

B.It can be a very serious disease.

    C.It doesn’t always require treatment.

D.It is a big problem in many countries.

2Why did Jake Baum ask children to bring in such home-made soups?

    A.To figure out their ingredients.

    B.To learn about different cultures.

C.To see if they could help cure fevers.

D.To see if they could help fight malaria.

3What does the underlined word “containing” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Improving. B.Proving. C.Preventing. D.Showing.

4What is a problem with the drugs used to fight malaria now?

A.They can be harmful to people’s health.

B.They have no effect on many people.

C.They just work in certain countries.

D.They are very difficult to get.

  • 27、At first sight, Alma Deutscher, a sixteen-year-old girl from England appears to be like any other typical teenager. She loves to skip rope, read and play with her younger sister. But this modest youngster, who composed her first musical work at age six, first short opera at age seven, and first full-length opera based on Cinderella at age ten, is anything but average. Though her parents downplayed(淡化)her extraordinary talent, young Alma is being described as “little Mozart” by the music world.

Alma’s opera based on the classic fairy tale, which she began writing at age eight, has a slight twist. Her Cinderella is a musician who meets her Prince Charming, a poet through a song. “In my Cinderella, she sings the beginning of a ballad—but at midnight she flees. Eventually, the prince finds her after asking all the girls of the country to sing the end of the ballad.”

The opera was first performed in Vienna, Austria on December 29, 2016, where the then eleven-year-old skillfully switched between the piano and the violin and received enthusiastic reviews. The young genius has since performed two new piano works, one in Australia and the other in China.

While this may appear to be a lot for someone so young, Alma is not worried. She says, “Of course I have to work hard. But all children have to work hard for exams, and at least when I work hard, I work hard for something incredibly exciting, like seeing my whole opera put on.”

Alma’s musical talent first came to light before she could even talk. Her parents recall that as an 18-month-old toddler, she was able to hum a perfect version of the children’s rhyme Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

However, Alma’s abilities only gained international attention in 2012, after a family friend posted a video online comparing her to Mozart. The family was suddenly swamped with media and Alma became an overnight star, dubbed “little Mozart”. This nickname makes her parents unhappy because they believe it puts added pressure on the young girl. They would instead prefer her to be called “a composer and musician”.

Alma does not want to be compared to the famous artist either, saying “There was only one Mozart, and I prefer to be little Alma.” Regardless of what she calls herself, the sixteen-year-old is changing the world of music forever!

【1】Which of the following statement about Alma is WRONG?

A.She can play the piano and the violin skillfully.

B.She can write operas and compose music as well.

C.Her talent goes far beyond that of Mozart.

D.She displayed her talent for music at an early age.

【2】What does the underlined word “twist”(Para 2) most probably mean?

    A.Disadvantage.

    B.Change.

    C.Improvement.

    D.Error.

【3】What do we know about Alma’s Cinderella?

A.Cinderella meets her Mr. Right through a song.

B.It is a short opera based on the classic fairy tale.

C.The prince finds her with the help of a crystal shoe.

D.It enjoys a great success and has been performed in China.

【4】What was Alma’s parents’ attitude to her fame?

    A.Overexcited.

    B.Concerned.

    C.Happy.

    D.Shocked.

  • 28、During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic,” said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.

So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic.

According to their new study, reduced loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration and skill.

“When people are absorbed in what they are doing, they enter a state called ‘flow’,” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”

To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re likely to feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”. On the contrary, if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and “flow” will not appear, either.

If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.

“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary(片刻的) enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”

However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.

“People tend to grow on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”

    【1】What did Dattilo study?

    A.Why people feel lonely.

    B.How to reduce loneliness.

    C.What enjoyable activities are.

D.Why people like a new challenge.

【2】How do people feel when they enter the “flow” state?

    A.They are concentrating and happy.

B.They feel time passes too quickly.

    C.They feel stressed and tired.

    D.They are lonely and bored.

【3】Which activity is possible to help people achieve flow?

    A.Watching TV.

    B.Eating nuts.

    C.Writing.

    D.Chatting.

【4】What can we do to reduce loneliness during lockdown, according to Dattilo?

    A.Follow a healthy lifestyle.

B.Learn as many skills as possible.

C.Do some enjoyable and challenging tasks.

    D.Complete impossible challenges.

【5】What’s the best title of the passage?

    A.A Loneliness Epidemic

    B.Go with the flow

    C.A study of loneliness

D.A Balance between Life and Work

  • 29、Ford is turning McDonald’s coffee waste into headlights

Ford is recently including coffee chaff (谷壳) that comes off during the roasting process—into the plastic headlights housing (大灯外壳) used in some cars. It has asked McDonald’s, which doesn’t roast its own coffee, to connect it with suppliers.

In recent years, as consumers feel more concern for plastic pollution and carbon emissions, companies have made full commitments to reduce their influences on the environment. They’ve also been developing new, sustainable materials to build consumer products.

Traditionally, Ford uses plastic and talc(滑石粉) to make its headlights housing. The coffee version is more sustainable because it’s lighter and doesn’t use the talc which, as a mineral, isn’t renewable. Coffee chaff, on the other hand, is widely available, and much of it goes to waste. Eventually, Ford hopes to use the material for more parts.

Ford decided to work with coffee chaff a few years ago. But it’s been experimenting with organic materials for over a decade. The auto company has been using soy-based foam(泡沫) in its cushions since 2011. It also uses waste from wheat, coconut, tomato and other plants in its cars in order to help meet some of its sustainability goals, which include using more renewable materials. Once the Ford team figured out how coffee chaff could be used to build car parts, it reached out to McDonald’s because of the restaurant chain ‘s scale and its sustainability goals. Like Ford, McDonald’s also wants to bring renewable and recycled materials into its products. The partnership between Ford and McDonald’s is an example of how brands with different projects can work together.

“We’ve conventionally thought of cooperation as within the food industry,” said Lan Olson, senior director of Global Sustainability at McDonald’s. “The Ford partnership can help McDonald’s see what kind of larger impacts are possible when it works with a company in another field. This is just scratching(划开) the surface of trying to understand what’s possible,” Olson said.

【1】Why is Ford applying coffee chaff to headlights housing?

    A.To work with McDonald’s.

B.To do experiments in the lab.

    C.To save resources and money.

    D.To reduce environmental pollution.

【2】What makes Ford choose McDonald’s as its partner?

A.Coffee of McDonald’s is so popular and has great potential.

B.Ford wants to cooperate with one in the food industry.

C.They have the same sustainability goals.

D.Different brands with different projects can work together.

【3】What can we learn from Olson’s words?

A.Cooperation between the two brands just begins.

B.The cooperation is only on the surface.

    C.Ford has a large influence on McDonald’s.

D.Only cooperation within the food industry is welcomed.

We know it’s good to learn another language, and that it’s fun too. But to improve our language skills, many of us have to endure hours of school lessons or evening classes, with our heads buried in textbooks. It’s no wonder that technology appears to be providing a better and more accessible way of learning.

There is certainly a huge demand for language learning, and having a smart phone means you can have a virtual teacher with you wherever you go. Many app developers are keen to earn money on the demand, and there are numerous learning apps available.

Some educational apps offer languages not popular enough to be taught at evening classes, or at most universities. And others offer “invented” language courses in Esperanto, Elvish and Star Trek’s Klingon—lessons you might not find in a traditional classroom. Whatever you want to learn, apps allow you to go at your own pace and fit learning around other tasks. But they’re not perfect—you might not get your head round the grammar and will lack the partner support you could get in a classroom environment.

So, does technology imply the end of traditional classrooms and teachers? Guy Baron, head of modern languages at Aberystwyth University, thinks not. He thinks that apps should be used alongside traditional classroom methods. And he adds,“The apps are not formal...they’re not designed for degrees, but they could be additional resources.”
