26、In 1834 Cambridge University philosopher William Whewell coined the term “scientist” to describe someone who studies the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. You could conclude that the first modern scientist was someone like Charles Darwin or Michael Faraday, two iconic figures who also happened to be Whewell’s contemporaries.
We could go back to the ancient Greeks, all the way back to Thales of Miletus. Thales achieved much in both science and mathematics, yet he left no written record. Homer, a celebrated figure, received credit for many great achievements, but may never have existed at all. We could consider other ancient Greeks as well, such as Euclid, the father of geometry (几何学) or Ptolemy, the misguided astronomer. But all of these men relied on supposing instead of running experiments to prove or disprove hypotheses (假说).
Christian Huygens, Robert Hooke and Isaac Newton fulfilled these requirements. But to find the first scientist, you have to travel to the earlier. You probably think of Galileo Galilei. He overturned Aristotle’s ideas on motion. Yet Galileo owed much to another person born 20 years earlier. His name was William Gilbert, a rather unknown figure in the history of science.
Gilbert was born in 1544 in England and then attended Cambridge University. His work reached the peak in On the Magnet, Magnetic Bodies, and the Great Magnet of the Earth. In the book’s preface,
Gilbert described the need for “sure experiments, observations and demonstrated arguments” instead of “conjectures (猜想) and the opinions of inference”. He also discussed the importance of conducting experiments carefully and skillfully. The scientists followed his advice and achieved a lot. Gilbert directly influenced Galileo, who nodded in affirmation (肯定) at Gilbert’s ideas about experimentation and observation. It is no wonder that Galileo claimed Gilbert to be the founder of the scientific method. This statement may be enough to confirm that Gilbert was the first modern scientist.

27、Bing Dwen Dwen, the cute mascot of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, has been selling like hotcakes. Why is the ice—glazed panda so popular? What are the clever ideas behind its design? Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts professor Cao Xue, who is in charge of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics mascot design team, told the story.
The 14-member design team led by Cao Xue are all teachers and graduate students from the School of Visual Arts and Design of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. During that time, there were almost no holidays, and the whole team need to revise and discuss every day, and they ended up completing over 10,000 manuscripts. In the end, Bing Dwen Dwen, based on a panda, was selected from nearly 6,000 entries from 35 countries and regions.
Bing Dwen Dwen is a panda with a high sense of science and technology. It draws attention with its full-body “shell” made out of ice. Cao said the inspiration came from traditional. Chinese snack “ice-sugar gourd,” also known as tanghulu, which is candied hawthorns on a stick, while the shell also looks like a space suit — a nod to embracing new technologies for a future of infinite possibilities.
Although the tanghulu idea was widely praised, it wasn’t enough to represent the image of a big country. So the team tried again and again, changing the image in the ice shell into elk, tiger, rabbit…Various ideas have been put forward and overturned, but eventually it was decided that China’s national treasure panda is the most beloved by people all over the world.

28、“To me, love is the most important thing. What could be more healing than love?”
These words, like lines from a poem, are from Robin, who founded the Bumi Sehat Bali Clinic in central Ubud. Now the clinic provides treatment or educational support for over 100, 000 people annually.
Giving birth to her first child at nineteen, Robin moved to Hawaii after college, working for several years on a farm, where she taught farming practices and poetry. But in 1991, she received heartbreaking news. Her idyllic life on the farm was turned upside down when her sister, expecting a child in Alabama, died of pregnancy complications (孕娠并发症) .
“When my dear sister passed away, I realized mothers were dying everywhere. In countries with increased poverty, some people can’t afford to go to the hospital. What motivated me initially was my love for my sister, but this soon grew into a concern for mothers and children all over the world.” Robin’s feelings for her sister were transformed into a desire to help women everywhere in need.
To ensure that children are born healthy, nutritionally balanced meals are provided for expecting mothers free of charge. Those who lack housing are free to stay as long as it is necessary. The clinic also sees patients of all ages who have symptoms unrelated to childbirth, while providing facilities for language learning and IT education, and annually training over 6, 000 nursing and midwifery (助产) students, backed by a scholarship program.
Just as Robin said, love is to be found inside the Bumi Schat Bali Clinic. Perhaps feelings of showing kindness toward others and wanting to make the world a better place are the key to a brighter tomorrow.

29、 We have encountered a crisis around the corner. You mean global warming? The world economy? No, the decline of reading. People are just not doing it anymore, especially the young. Who’s responsible?
Actually, it’s more like, what is responsible? The Internet, of course, and everything that comes with it – Facebook, Twitter . You can write your own list.
There’s been a warning about the imminent death of literate civilization for a long time. In the 20th century, first it was the movies, then radio, then television that seemed to spell doom for the written world. None did. Reading survived; in fact it not only survived, it has flourished. The world is more literate than ever before – there are more and more readers, and more and more books.
The fact that we often get our reading material online today is not something we should worry over. The electronic and digital revolution of the last two decades has arguably shown the way forward for reading and for writing. Take the arrival of e-book readers as an example.
Devices like Kindle make reading more convenient and are a lot more environmentally friendly than the traditional paper book.
As technology makes new ways of writing possible, new ways of reading are possible. Interconnectivity allows for the possibility of a reading experience that was barely imaginable before. Where traditional books had to make do with photographs and illustrations, an e-book can provide readers with an unlimited number of links: to texts, pictures, and videos. In the future, the way people write novels, history, and philosophy will resemble nothing seen in the past.
On the other hand, there is the danger of trivialization. One Twitter group is offering its followers single-sentence-long “digests” of the great novels. War and Peace in a sentence? You must be joking. We should fear the fragmentation of reading. There is the danger that the high-speed connectivity of the Internet will reduce our attention span—that we will be incapable of reading anything of length or which requires deep concentration.
In such a fast-changing world, in which reality seems to be remade each day, we need the ability to focus and understand what is happening to us. This has always been the function of literature and we should be careful not to let it disappear. Our society needs to be able to imagine the possibility of someone utterly in tune with modern technology but able to make sense of a dynamic, confusing world.
In the 15th century, Johannes Guttenberg’s invention of the printing press in Europe had a huge impact on civilization. Once upon a time the physical book was a challenging thing. We should remember this before we assume that technology is out to destroy traditional culture.
【1】The following are all cited as advantages of e-books EXCEPT _____.
A.multimodal content B.environmental friendliness
C.convenience for readers D.imaginative design
【2】Which of the following can best describe how the author feels toward single-sentence-long novels?
A.Ironic B.Worried.
C.Impersonal D.Doubtful.
【3】According to the passage, people need knowledge of modern technology and _____ to survive in the fast-changing society.
A.good judgment B.high sensitivity
C.good imagination D.the ability to focus
【4】What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Technology pushes the way forward for reading and writing.
B.Interconnectivity is a feature of new reading experience.
C.Technology is an opportunity and a challenge for traditional reading.
D.Technology offers a greater variety of reading practice.
