二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、They say there are three ways to experience the Grand Canyon; on foot, on mules(骡子) or by air. We chose the first. Up early, my husband and I and our three children couldn't wait to get started. We decided to walk along a lovely path named Bright Angel Trail.

As we set out, I was shocked at how narrow the path was. And I couldn't help noticing that the other tourists weren't like us. They had heavy backpacks, water bottles, and hats. But as usual we were dressed. As the sun rose higher, Arizona's famous heat seemed to roast us. There was no shade and our legs were aching. We decided to go back, with the girl on my back and the boys far behind. By the time we finally got back, our legs were like jelly.

The next day, after we'd had a long rest and a good breakfast, we were ready for another view of the Canyon—by air. After our last walk, this would be the easiest thing in the world.

We called to each other excitedly as the plane took off and circled around the Canyon. But the smiles on our faces disappeared as the pilot tossed(翻转) the plane around, pretending he was going to hit the ground. I shouted, "STOP, TAKE US BACK!" When we finally arrived back on land, once again our legs were like jelly. We hardly spoke as we drove back.

As I said, there are three ways to view the Grand Canyon. We never tried the mules, but personally I'd suggest a fourth: buy yourself a good magazine like National Geographic. That way, you can see the Canyon, without fear or tiredness.

【1】Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph?

A.They made a careful preparation before the trip.

B.The children were more joyful than their parents.

C.Bright Angel Trail was not as lovely as they expected.

D.The summer heat prevented them from enjoying the view.

【2】The underlined expression "Our legs were like jelly" probably means ______.

    A.we were weak

    B.we were unhappy

    C.we were dissatisfied

    D.we were disappointed

【3】Which of the following best describes their Canyon trip by air?

    A.It proved to be frightening.

    B.It was more comfortable.

C.It turned out to be exciting.

D.It made each of them tired.

【4】We can infer from the passage that ____.

A.experiencing the Canyon on mules would be the best way

B.one needs to dress less when visiting the Grand Canyon

C.the writer was not serious when she made the suggestion

D.the whole family narrowly escaped from the air accident

  • 27、Next time you hear a funny joke you'd better not laugh too hard. According to a paper published by the British Medical Journal, laughter isn't always the best medicine. Sometimes it can even be harmful. Professor Robin Ferner from the University of Birmingham, one of the authors of the study, found that bad things could happen to people who laughed too much. He says, "We found people with heartbeat problems which had stopped their hearts, we found people who had fainted(昏倒), and we found people who'd dislocated their jaws or burst their lungs."

It seems that laughing can be no laughing matter. But it's not all doom and gloom. Professor Ferner says there are benefits to laughing when you want to lose weight, for example. Yes, that's right: laugh and be slimmer! Professor Ferner explains that: "You use energy when you laugh, you move your diaphragm(横隔膜), you expand your lungs, and both those things can be helpful."

According to the research, laughing for a quarter of an hour can burn 40 calories, and if you laughed all day you'd use about 2, 000 calories, which is what most people consume in a day. But don't do that or you might end up with a painful jaw. Ouch! Or you might find people looking at you in a funny way.

But I don't want to finish this article leaving you feeling desperate. Laughter comes naturally for most of us. Babies begin to laugh at around 3-6 months. So give in to your sense of humour and keep smiling. Life is short anyway.

1Laughing too much may cause the following harmful results EXCEPT _____

    A. heart stop

    B. diaphragm movement

    C. lung burst

    D. jaw dislocation

2The underlined phrase "doom and gloom" in Paragraph 2 probably means "______".

    A. hopeless

    B. funny

    C. painful

    D. nervous

3How many calories can you use if you laugh for half a day?

    A. About 40.

    B. About 1, 000.

    C. About 2, 000.

    D. About 2, 040.

4What is the author's attitude towards laughing in the last paragraph?

    A. Uninterested.

    B. Disapproving.

    C. Worried.

    D. Favorable.

  • 28、The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty playing basketball or riding home from school. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for your health. There are plenty of “energy drinks” on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great!

But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine(咖啡因) in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much. Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee(OC) has limited(限制) its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. Just one box of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart problems.Scientists say that teenagers should be discouraged from taking drinks with a lot of caffeine in them.

【1】Many people like drinking energy drinks because of the following EXCEPT that______.

A.they have beautiful colors and cool names

    B.they have lots of caffeine

C.they can keep them awake and better at sports

D.they are said to be helpful to health

【2】What does the underlined word “discouraged” in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Encouraged.

    B.Stopped.

    C.Helped.

    D.Disliked.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Advertisements are important in getting people to buy energy drinks.

B.Energy drinks are helpful to teenagers' study.

C.Sports players need to drink a lot of energy drinks.

D.Energy drinks are especially aimed at teenagers.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A.What's the Use of Energy Drinks?

    B.Who Can Drink Energy Drinks?

    C.What's That in Energy Drinks?

D.Why Can't We Buy Energy Drinks?

  • 29、   A new experiment shows that the more energy consumed by a clock, the more accurate its timekeeping.

Clocks consume energy and release heat. A kitchen clock, for example, does this by using up its battery. Generally the most accurate clocks require the most energy, which suggests a fundamental connection between energy consumption and accuracy. This is what an international team of scientists from Lancaster. Oxford, and Vienna set out to test.

To do this, they built a particularly simple clock, consisting of a super-thin membrane (薄膜), combined with an electronic circuit. Each vibration (振动) of the membrane generated one electrical tick (滴答). The inventive aspect of this design is that it is powered simply by heating the membrane, while the complete flow of energy through the clock can be measured electrically.

The scientists found that the more heat they supplied, the more accurately the clock ran. In fact, the accuracy was directly relative to the heat released. To make the clock twice as accurate, they needed to supply twice as much heat.

The experiment shows a similarity between the operation of a clock and a steam engine. With a steam engine there is fundamental restriction on how much heat we must supply to do a desired amount of work. This restriction is the famous Second Law of Thermodynamics (热力学) which is central to modern engineering. What this experiment suggests is that clocks, like engines, are restricted by the Second Law, with their output being accurate ticks instead of mechanical work.

Dr Edward Laird of Lancaster University said: “This experiment suggests that clocks are also restricted by thermodynamics. It also poses an interesting question: are all possible clocks limited in this way, or is it just a characteristic of the ones we have studied?”

Interestingly, many everyday clocks have an efficiency that is close to what the scientists’ analysis predicts. For example, their analysis predicts that a wristwatch whose accuracy per tick is one part in ten million must consume at least a microwatt of power. In fact, a basic wristwatch usually consumes only a few times this amount. The laws of thermodynamics, discovered in the nineteenth century, are still finding new applications today.

【1】What do the scientists want to test about clocks?

A.Whether to restrict their heat supply.

    B.How energy influences their accuracy.

C.How to make them particularly simple.

D.Whether they are similar to steam engines.

【2】In what way do clocks work differently from steam engines according to the experiment?

A.The restriction from the Second Law.

    B.The law behind their operation.

    C.The accuracy of their work.

    D.The form of their output.

【3】What will Dr Edward Laird most likely agree with?

    A.Further studies should be done.

    B.More questions should be raised.

C.Restrictions on clocks should be lifted.

D.Suggestions of the experiment should be adopted.

【4】What is the article mainly about?

    A.The Second Law of Thermodynamics.

    B.The energy consumption of clocks.

    C.A new experiment.

    D.A simple clock.
