二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、The shade of a single tree can provide welcome relief from the hot summer sun. But when that single tree is part of a small forest, it creates a considerable cooling effect. According to a study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, trees play a big role in keeping our cities cool.

According to the study, the right amount of tree cover can lower summer daytime temperatures by as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit. And the effect is quite noticeable from neighborhood to neighborhood, even down to the scale of a single city block. “We knew that cities are warmer than the surrounding countryside, but we found that temperatures vary just as much within cities,” says Monica Turner, a professor in the department of Integrative Biology, Wisconsin-Madison University and a co-author of the study.

With climate change making extreme heat events more common each summer, city planners are working on how to prepare. Heat waves drive up energy demands and costs and can have big human health impacts. One potentially powerful tool, the study's authors say, are organisms that have been around long before human civilizations could appreciate their leafy benefits. And those trees may be the secret to keeping the places we live livable.

Essentially, says Turner, roads, sidewalks and buildings absorb heat from the sun during the day and slowly release that heat at night. Trees, on the other hand, not only shade those surfaces from the sun's rays, they also release water into the air through their leaves, a process that cools things down.

To get the maximum benefit of this cooling service, the study found that tree cover must be more than 40 percent. In other words, an aerial picture of a single city block would need to be nearly half-way covered by a leafy green network of branches and leaves.

【1】What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

A.Temperatures in cities mainly depend on their green coverage.

B.People living and working in cities must plant trees in summer.

C.Cities are warmer than the countryside because they don't have trees.

D.An area with more trees can be cooler than the other parts within a city.

【2】Which of the following problems is caused by extreme heat events?

    A.Severe damage of city facilities.

    B.Serious human health problems.

    C.Residents' growing demands for plants.

    D.Unnecessary waste of energy resources.

【3】Why are trees crucial to cities?

A.They help shade and cool the cities.

    B.They make urban scenery beautiful.

C.They build up city cooling systems.

D.They essentially block and release heat.

【4】What can city planners conclude from the study?

A.They should publish the study in a newspaper.

B.They should educate citizens to protect forests.

C.They should plant trees on roads and sidewalks.

D.They should cover nearly half the city with trees.

  • 27、   Researchers are looking into new ways to generate efficient photovoltaic energy (光伏能源) and for this they have been inspired by the v-shaped posture of the Cabbage White butterfly (菜粉蝶).

Photovoltaic energy is the science behind solar power, where light is turned into electricity. It is a two-step process. Step one is a photoelectric effect, caused by sunlight. The second step is an electrochemical process, which generates an electric current.

To improve the collection of sunlight, a research group has been inspired by the resting posture of the Cabbage White butterfly. The species has a natural range across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. To many farmers, the butterflies are regarded as a pest; to others, they are pretty to look at. To one research group the butterflies are an inspiration.

The butterfly adopts a v-shape in order to heat up its flight muscles before taking off. By creating solar panels (太阳能电池板) in this formation, scientists think that the quantity of power that a solar panel can produce can be increased by around 50 percent.

The Cabbage White butterfly is different to many other butterflies in using the v-formation. On cloudy days butterflies need to wait to receive enough sunlight in order to fly. However, by using the v-posture, the Cabbage White butterfly is able to take in more energy more quickly than other butterflies. In addition, the butterfly can reflect sunlight from its wings, which allows its flight muscles to be warmed to an ideal temperature.

The new research was conducted at the University of Exeter's Environment and Sustain --ability Institute (ESI) and the Centre for Ecology and Conservation. Discussing the findings with Laboratory Manager magazine, lead researcher Professor Tapas Mallick stated: “Biomimicry (仿生学) in engineering is not new. However, this research shows pathways to develop low cost solar power that have not been done before.”

【1】Which can be the best title for the text?

    A.The future of solar power.

    B.The butterfly effect theory.

C.Cool things about the Cabbage White butterfly.

D.Butterflies contribute to solar power revolution.

【2】What is the main purpose of Cabbage White butterflies using the v-posture?

    A.To look prettier.

    B.To take a good rest.

    C.To prepare for flight.

    D.To protect themselves.

【3】What is Tapas Mallick's attitude towards the research?

    A.Positive.

    B.Casual.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Disagreeing.

【4】Where is the text most probably taken from?

    A.A lesson plan.

    B.A book review.

    C.A science report.

    D.A personal diary.

  • 28、Mail lay scattered across the kitchen table. I couldn’t put off sorting through it any longer. I checked the envelopes, putting aside the ones addressed to my husband.

It had been over three years since Bob had died. To friends and family it looked like I had moved past the worst of my sorrow. I took care of my house, socialized and kept up with community. On the outside everything appeared to be normal. But inside I was anything but I worried I would never get better, never be myself again. They say sorrow has no set time limit, but I was so tired of feeling empty and hopeless. My sorrow was sharp and fresh as ever. It was like a wall of pressure in my chest, pressing my heart.

I picked up a piece of Bob’s mail and held it out to tear in half, but stopped myself from cutting up the envelope. The letter was from an organization that funded a Haitian orphanage called My Father’s House. Its founder, Carol Hawthorne, had given a presentation at our church. Bob and I had donated, and Bob ended up on the mailing list to receive the newsletter (通讯) with updates on the children.

I hadn’t read one since Bob died. But just three months before, in January 2012, the country had been hit by a terrible earthquake. In my depressed state, it hadn’t even occurred to me to wonder whether the orphanage had survived. I opened the newsletter and was surprised to find out that My Father’s House was still standing. Of course now it was more crowded than ever. At the bottom of the page was an announcement about an upcoming trip to visit the orphanage in person. “I should go.” The thought wouldn’t leave me. I contacted Carol Hawthorne.“What would I do if I go?” I asked.“Build houses?”

“The Haitian people there are eager to work and they know what they’re doing,” said Carol. “What they need are raw materials, and we provide them. We also visit with the children. We go to clinics and schools, pass out supplies. You’ll be very busy, I promise!” I reserved a seat but didn’t mention it to any of my friends. Just a few weeks later, I was at the airport with seven strangers, waiting to board a plane to Haiti. Even after takeoff I wasn’t really sure of what I was doing.

In Haiti we were met by Pastor Ronald Lefranc, the director of My Father’s House. We piled into an old school bus and drove over uneven roads full of stones and mud. We passed women shaking under the weight of huge water buckets balanced on their heads. Piles of rubbish scattered across the landscape, and the land was covered with broken tents. Finally we pulled up to the orphanage. A crowd of children52 in allrushed up to greet us. I couldn’t understand the words of the song they sang in Creole, but with the smiles on their faces I didn’t need to. Each child planted a big kiss on my cheek.

Carol and Pastor Ronald led us into the main building. “What are those over there?” I asked, pointing to a collection of thin tents. “Is there not enough room in the building for all the children?”

“We have the room,” said Pastor Ronald. “But many of these children came here after the earthquake. They still don’t feel safe sleeping under a roof.”

There was no sign of fear in the playroom inside. I played dolls and other games. Children I’d just met presented me with pictures they’d drawn and letters written in Creole. In the evening the children gathered in the dining room. They took turns reading aloud and then they all joined in song. The words were strange, but the tune sounded familiar.

They’d lost so much, yet were so joyful. In the evening the children gathered in the dining room. One of the older children stood up to speak and then they all joined in song. The words were strange, but the tune sounded familiar. The children settled down. In the silence, a quiet noise began.

  • 29、Shundagarh is a village on India’s east-facing coast. It is a village of simple mud and grass houses built on the beach just above the waterline. The Khadra Hills rise immediately behind the village, to a height of one hundred and fifty meters. A simple, good-hearted old man, whose name was Jalpur, farmed two small fields on the very edge of these hills. From his fields he could see the fishing boats that traveled up and down the coast. He could see the children playing on the sands; their mothers washing clothes on the flat stones where the Shiva River flowed into the sea; and their fathers landing the latest catch or repairing nets and telling stories that had no end.

All Jalpur owned in the world were the clothes he wore day in and day out, the miserable(蹩脚的) hut that he slept in at night, a few tools and cooking pots and his fields. The corn that he grew was all that made life possible. If the weather was kind and the harvest was good, Jalpur could live happily enough not well, but happily. When the sun was fierce, and there was little or no rain, then he came close to the line between life and death.

Last year the weather had been so kind, and the harvest promised to be so good, that Jalpur had been wondering whether he could sell all that he had and live with his son farther up the coast. He had been thinking about doing this for some years. It was his dearest wish to spend his last days with his son and his wife. But he would go only if he could give; he would not go if it meant taking food out of the mouths of his grandchildren. He would rather die hungry than do this.

On the day when Jalpur decided that he would harvest his corn, sell it, and move up the coast, he looked out to the sea and saw a huge wave, several kilometers out, advancing on the coast and on the village of Shundagarh. Within ten minutes everyone in Shundagarh would be drowned. Jalpur would have shouted, but the people were too far away to hear. He would have run down the hill, but he was too old to run. He was prepared to do anything to save the people of Shundagarh, so he did the only thing that he could do: he set fire to his corn. In a matter of seconds the flames were rising high and smoke was rising higher. Within a minute the people of Shundagarh were racing up the hill to see what had happened. There, in the middle of his blackened cornfield, they found Jalpur; and there they buried him.

On his grave, they wrote the words: Here lies Jalpur, a man who gave, living; a man who died, giving.

【1】Which of the following could Jalpur NOT see from his fields?

    A. Fathers taking their corn to market.

    B Mothers washing clothes.

    C. Fishing boats traveling on the sea.

    D. Children playing on the sands.

    【2】Why didn’t Jalpur live well?

    A. He didn’t work hard.

    B. He had too many children to feed.

    C. The villagers kept taking his corn.

    D. He only depended on good weather and harvest for survival.

【3】 What did Jalpur do when he saw the huge wave?

    A. He ran down the hill to tell the people.

    B. He screamed loudly to get the villagers’ attention.

    C. He set his corn on fire so the people of Shundagarh would leave the beach.

    D. He stood still, not knowing what to do.

【4】The villagers were thankful to Jalpur because he had .

    A. given them his corn in order to save them from hunger

    B. saved their village from being drowned by the wave

    C. given them many things during his life

    D. given his life in order to save theirs

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was the end of the summer holiday, and school would open in two weeks, which means we kids only had a very short period of time to enjoy. However, the holiday was so boring that it was impossible for me to find something fun to do. When I had successfully contacted all of my friends, one of them suggested that we all should go down to the sea and just relax.

It wasn’t fun at first, just relaxing on the beach, seeing an old man repair an ancient-looking boat, but it was clearly on our minds to jump into the sea and just take a swim in the clear cold water because it was getting so hot. So we stripped off our clothes and dived into the water. The salt water was so truly cool and refreshing that we splashed cold water in each other’s faces.

“You shouldn’t swim that day,’’ The old man advised. “There is a storm coming up.” Enjoying the soft sea wind, I didn’t take it seriously. “If you go further there you’ll be sorry,” the old man called after me. “Thanks for your reminding, we know very well in our heart.” I replied and walked into the gentle waves. We were having so much fun that I didn’t notice how far I had reached into the sea as the water had almost reached my chest.

Suddenly, a gust of wind lifted a huge wave over me and threw me further away. My friends failed to reach me so they swam ashore and screamed for help. Then white caps began rolling in and it became harder to swim against the currents. Before I knew it, before I could do anything to maintain my balance in the deep water, I was bringing my whole entire body into the sea.
