二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Punks, Ravers, Mods and Teddy Boys are the names of British youth subcultures (亚文 ) from the last 70 years.

Youth Club, a UK not-for-profit organization, released a book earlier this year celebrating many different subcultures from throughout Britain’s recent history.

“A catalyst (催化剂) for creativity on the worldwide stage, British youth culture movements from the Teddy Boys of the 1950s to the Grime Scene of the 2000s continue to play a pioneering role in music, fashion and creativity across the globe”, it wrote on its website.

These subcultures were traditionally a way for young people to show their personalities to others. Walking around London in the 1970s would have meant seeing dozens of young “punks” ——people dressed in ripped denim (破洞), leather jackets, body piercings (穿孔) and with brightly-dyed hair on the streets. And in the 90s, “ravers” were young people who threw all-night parties in abandoned buildings or car parks.

So, what was the reason behind these subcultures?

“On both sides of the Atlantic, more and more young disappointed teenagers were looking for an escape from the boredom and constraints (约束) of society,” wrote Ian Youngs, BBC entertainment reporter. “Unemployment, racial tensions and social upheaval (剧变) added fuel to their fires.”

“Fashion and music are much cheaper and faster today.” said Ruth Adams, a culture lecturer at King’s College London, “but it’s all a bit more blurry (模糊不清的).” She believes it’s harder to figure out someone’s personality or music tastes nowadays just by looking at them.

Despite this, Adams believes that today’s young people are still finding their own way to express themselves, but in a more modern way.

1According to the text, British youth subcultures ________.

A.were a way for youth to express their identities

B.were started by Youth Club to promote creativity

C.could be traced back to the 1970s

D.had a greater effect on fashion than music

2What contributed to the popularity of youth subcultures?

    A.Youth club of culture movements.

B.Young people’s longing for fame and wealth.

C.Young people’s desire for freedom and fun.

D.The easy access to fashion and music.

3Which of the following would Ruth Adams probably agree with?

A.It costs more money to stick to fashion and music.

B.Young people today can’t express themselves easily.

C.Young people today are less interested in music and fashion.

D.It’s harder to recognize the personalities of young people today.

4What’s the author’s attitude towards subcultures?

    A.Negative. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.

  • 22、Traveling Tips

    No Smoking

Federal and State Government Regulations do not allow you to smoke on board express coaches within Australia.

    Luggace Allowance

As a fare paying customer you are entitled to take 2 pieces of personal luggage. Each must not exceed 75 cm in length, or weigh more than 20kg.

Excess luggage will be carried at the company’s excess luggage rate and depending on space availability may be required to be carried on another coach.

    Luggage Tips

    1) Keep your valuables with you. Money, jewellery, valuable documents, credit cards, keys, medications should be retained by you and not on the coach at meal or transport stops.

    2) Use sturdy, lockable luggage. Do not use plastic bags as these may split during the transit.

    3) Make sure you identify your luggage with a name tag.

    4) Backpacks—stow all items and do not leave mugs, shoes, towels hanging off your backpack as these can get caught in other luggage and cause damage.

    Departure Times

The time shown on your ticket is the coach departure time. If you are boarding halfway and not at a travel centre or terminal you should be at the pick up point 15 minutes ahead of this time, so you can be comfortably on board by the time the coach is due to leave. If you are boarding at a travel centre or terminal, please arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the published departure time and remember to allow extra time at peak travel times.

    Dress Requirements

As a courtesy, and so as not to offend fellow travelers, a reasonable standard of clothing and footwear is required.

    1As a traveler, you can ________.

A.take the luggage 75 cm in length and 20kg in weight only

B.leave valuable belongings on coach when going for meals

C.identify your luggage by attaching a name tag to it

D.leave the mugs and shoes hanging off the backpack

2Among the following traveling tips, which one is true?

A.Smoking is strictly forbidden all over the places within Australia.

B.Plastic bags should be avoided in case of split during the transit.

C.15 minutes ahead of the departure time should be guaranteed.

D.Standards of dress requirements have been specifically listed.

  • 23、A student walks into his first class and realizes he forgot all about the midterm exam. He knows he needs to bring his grades up, and getting a zero will make it nearly impossible. He quickly jots down some notes and shoves them under his lap hoping it will help him pass. Cheating is a major concern in all academic environments. Students are creating new and more outrageous(令人吃惊的) ways of cheating every day; some claim that certain accounts of cheating can be justified, but overall it can always be prevented.

Cheating has been around forever, and millions of ways to cheat have been fashioned. Copying homework and cheat sheets are some of the most basic ways students in all education levels have cheated. Some students think nothing about writing a few answers on their hand, in a gum wrapper, or boldly using a study guide to cheat. Desperate students have even gone as far as to steal the test or scan in bottle wrappers and put answers into the nutrition label. The Internet has now become available in almost every location. Computers can be accessed at school, at home, and now even on cell phones. This opens a doorway for even more methods of cheating to be born.

There are countless opinions on whether or not cheating can be justified. The truth is this behavior will always be a matter of opinion with each scenario of cheating. Students often rationalize their cheating by claiming they forgot to look over the material or did not understand what the teacher or professor was saying. Some may counter these arguments by saying that the students could have set reminders or asked the teacher to explain the material before the day of the test. Some other reasons why students believe cheating is justified are their heavy workloads and trying to find time for school, sports, friends, and family. This may be true in certain instances, however, all students have these problems, and it is unfair to the students who refrain(忍耐,节制) from cheating when the student who is dishonest receives a better grade. The majority of students who think cheating is acceptable may believe the reason for this is that sometimes students are unaware they are cheating, there is not enough time given for assignments, or that the information is too much for the course.

It may be difficult to accomplish, but cheating can be prevented. Teachers and professors have tried many options to stop cheating. These options can range anywhere from simply spreading testtakers out in a room, to expelling(驱逐) a student, which will most likely hinder their plans of getting into another college. One simple way to fix the problem is to scold the student when caught. They may be so scared or embarrassed that they never do it again. This is a risky way to prevent cheating in some cases, however, because it can possibly damage selfesteem. Another simple way to avoid cheating is to create many different kinds of the same test. This prohibits(阻止) students from getting the answers off of a neighbor's test, but students still have the option of using other cheating tactics.

There may be a million ways to cheat and get away with it, but there are few times, if any, that it is justified. Cheating never has to be a necessity and it is never worth compromising morals and losing years worth of working towards a degree. This problem is spreading throughout America; with everyone's help, it can be stopped.

  • 24、   Growing up in England with a British father and a Chinese mother, I've enjoyed food from both countries ever since I was able to hold a knife and fork and chopsticks!

Mum has sweet memories of the food from her home town in Sichuan, and often cooks spicy dishes. Thanks to this Dad has come to love hot pot! But there are still some dishes that Dad dare not try even after many years of marriage to my mother. Even today he still does not take to eating things like chicken feet

But I enjoy that sort of food myself. Last week, I went to the butcher's and asked, "Do you have pigs' ears" "No," the butcher said, pulling at his own ears, "just these ordinary ones." He must have thought I was joking

Dad can cook a super "full English breakfast" of bacon, eggs, beans, sausages and toast with butter. Mum and I just have to find a way to get him into the kitchen! He also does a typical Sunday roast. We all love roast beef and vegetables

I'll never forget my first visit to China. Mum encouraged me to try different kinds of food. But just when I thought I could deal with all Chinese food, I came across stinky tofu, a horrible grey thing that looked and smelt like a burnt sports shoe. I gathered all my courage to take a bite and was amazed to find it wasn't so bad. It reminded me of blue cheese, a similarly strong smelling type of food you either love or hate. Maybe I'll fall in love with stinky tofu, someday.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Frey grabbed his bat and glove, and raced out of the door towards the Jack’s. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the team in the following semester.

Jack was waiting outside for Frey. “What are you doing? Where’s your stuff?” Frey asked, lifting his bat onto his shoulder. Jack shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Willow’s garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Willows. She thinks they’re kind of old and can’t afford to hire a cleaner.

To get the work done earlier, Frey offered to help. The boys went down the block to the Willow’s and got started. They found a couple of brooms. Before they swept, they put boxes scattered around the garage floor on shelves. As Jack put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked it up. It wasn’t sealed, so he opened it. Out of his surprise, there were several one hundred dollar bills inside.

“You’ve got to see this. ” He pulled out the bills and showed Frey, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be several hundred dollars here.” Jack looked past Frey to the garage door and continued, “Nobody’s here. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know.” Before his voice died away, Jack had already drawn out one bill and stuffed it into his pocket.

Frey frowned and shook his head, “Are you crazy? That’s stealing.” Jack ignored him and protested, “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It’s kind of payment for my hard work. And one hundred will do for a bat and glove in I go’s Sports Stores.” With this, Jack put the rest money back.

Frey was about to grab the money from Jack’s pocket when they heard a voice, “Hello, boys. Come in for a chocolate cake! Mrs. Willow made one for you.” Mr. Willow walked into the garage.
