二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In 1972, my mother announced that we'd spend that summer in Europe. In Rome,we stayed at a fancy hotel with rooms overlooking the Grand Canal. On many mornings, our breakfast arrived on rolling tables. Mum insisted I tip the waiters and make the dinner reservations." How?" I asked." Read guidebooks, and ask local people," she instructed.

She had made a detailed plan with a guiding theme, the Roman Empire(帝国),which was intended to excite my interest in the past. One day, we took a train to Paris. After pulling into Gare de Lyon, I waited in the taxi while my mother helped a lady get her next train to Nimes."Why did you have to do that?"I complained(抱怨)."When you become a traveler, you help those who need you in the same way you hope others will help you," she said.

In Paris, I finally got to test a theory I'd formed as a 9-year-old while reading a book about the lives of the French. The author's vivid descriptions of their meals led me to conclude that France was a country where everything was delicious. Very quickly, this turned out to be true. The croque monsieur I had when we lunched in a   was the most amazing sandwich I'd ever had. Four days later, we reached England. My mother suggested having breakfast in a cafe. When we sat down at the table over fresh bread rolls and hot chocolates, I couldn't eat. Somehow, I promised myself that I'd have to find my way back to Paris.

In 1986, I moved to France, where I 've lived ever since, mostly writing about food. My late mother eventually took pride in my career." I guess it was that trip to Europe," she 'd say with a knowing smile.

【1】What was the author's mum like in Rome?

A.She was very particular over hotels.

B.She felt confused about the rules of tipping.

C.She put the author in charge on many occasions.

D.She was eager to make friends with local people.

【2】What lesson did the author learn in Paris?

A.Make the best of your trip.

B.Travel well when you still can.

C.Take responsibility for your own life.

D.Treat others the way you want to be treated.

【3】What belief did the author hold before visiting France?

    A.There were many great authors.

B.All the food there would taste great.

C.The lives of the French centered on eating.

D.Sandwiches stood out among all French food.

【4】How did the trip to Europe impact on the author?

A.It changed his attitude towards traveling.

    B.It improved the mother-son relationship.

C.It directed him to his future career.

    D.It tested his patience.

  • 22、Wanted: “Golden taste buds” and a very sweet tooth

What if you’ve got to eat candy all day for your job?

There is a job that can include these duties, which is called being a “taste tester”. The Candy Funhouse is a candy company in Canada. Right now, it is hiring a taste tester. The job’s name is “chief candy officer”.

Candy Funhouse put up an ad for the job. The ad says the chief candy officer will be in charge of “all things fun”, so it’s special. The person who gets this job will have to like eating candy. Do you know how much? More than 100 pieces a day on average!

    Even Kids Can Apply

Many people think this job sounds pretty fun. The job is even open to kids! Are you 5 or older? Then you can apply!

Do you want this job? If you say yes, you need “golden taste buds (味蕾)”and “an obvious sweet tooth”, the ad says. You cannot be allergic to anything. You also need ideas about how to sell more candy, or how to make the candy better.

The company wants someone with a great sense of taste, though it will also provide some training.

This is because taste testers need to know a lot about food for their job.

Taste Testing Isn’t Just Eating Candy

As a taste tester for a candy company, you have to know how to talk about taste. You also have to understand different textures (口味). A texture is the way something feels when you eat it. For example, the texture of toast is sharp, firm and fresh. The texture of yoghurt is smooth. All in all, taste testers do more than eat candy. They should be aware of how to make sure their company has high-quality products.

    【1】What makes the job special?

    A.Needing a lot of tests.

    B.Being full of fun.

    C.Suiting children under 5.

    D.Focusing on sweet food.

【2】Who is most likely to be employed?

    A.An entertainer.

    B.A salesman.

    C.A sweet lover.

    D.A career cook.

【3】What’s the major duty of the taste tester?

    A.Telling taste apart.

    B.Selling products.

    C.Making things fun.

    D.Offering training.

  • 23、   When Liam McGee departed as president of Bank of America in August, his explanation was surprisingly straight up. Rather than cloaking his exit in the usual vague excuse, he came right out and said he was leaving “to pursue my goal of running a company.” Broadcasting his ambition was “very much my decision,” McGee says. Within two weeks, he was talking for the first time with the board of Hartford Financial Services Group, which named him CEO and chairman on September 29.

McGee says leaving without a position lined up gave him time to reflect on what kinds of company he wanted to run. It also sent a clear message to the outside world about his aspirations. And McGee isn’t alone. In recent weeks the No. 2 executives at Avon and American Express quit with the explanation that they were looking for a CEO post. As boards scrutinize succession plans in response to shareholder pressure, executives who don’t get the nod also may wish to move on. A turbulent business environment also has senior managers cautious of letting vague pronouncements cloud their reputations.

As the first signs of recovery begin to take hold, deputy chiefs may be more willing to make the jump without a net. In the third quarter, CEO turnover was down 23% from a year ago as nervous boards stuck with the leaders they had, according to Liberum Research. As the economy picks up, opportunities will abound for aspiring leaders.

The decision to quit a senior position to look for a better one is unconventional. For years executives and headhunters have adhered to the rule that the most attractive CEO candidates are the ones who must be poached. Says Korn Ferry, senior partner Dennis Carey: “I can’t think of a single search I’ve done where a board has not instructed me to look at sitting CEOs first.”

Those who jumped without a job haven’t always landed in top positions quickly. Ellen Marram quit as chief of Tropicana when the business became part of PepsiCo (PEP) a decade ago, saying she wanted to be a CEO. It was a year before she became head of a tiny internet-based commodities exchange. Robert Willemstad left Citigroup in 2005 with ambitions to be a CEO. He finally took that post at a major financial institution three years later.

Many recruiters say the old disgrace is fading for top performers. The financial crisis has made it more acceptable to be between jobs or to leave a bad one. “The traditional rule was it’s safer to stay where you are, but that’s been fundamentally inverted,” says one headhunter. “The people who’ve been hurt the worst are those who’ve stayed too long.”

1When McGee announced his departure, his manner can best be described as being _______.

    A.arrogant. B.frank. C.self-centered. D.impulsive.

2According to Paragraph 2, senior executives’ quitting may be encouraged by _______.

A.their expectation of better financial status B.their need to reflect on their private life

C.their strained relations with the boards D.their pursuit of new career goals

3It can be inferred from the last paragraph that _______.

A.top performers used to cling to their posts

B.loyalty of top performers is getting out-dated

C.top performers care more about reputations

D.it’s safer to stick to the traditional rules

4Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.CEOs; Where to Go? B.CEOs: All the Way Up?

C.Top Managers Jump without a Net D.The Only Way Out for Top Performers

  • 24、As has been all too apparent in recent days at Balcombe, few issues cause greater concern than energy policy. Many village communities feel their countryside is being ruined by the power-producing machines of wind farms; yet they never take “ direct action”, even though the planning laws put them at a severe disadvantage. And the generous subsidies(财政补贴),which encourage the expansion of wind power, are not favorable to the village communities and set landowners in conflict with other residents.

Those who disagree with the rapid expansion of wind farms state that the damage they cause is out of proportion to the benefits they bring, because their energy output cannot match that of the carbon-based power stations they are supposed to replace. Supporters insist that wind must be part of a mix of renewables, nuclear and carbon, and that the country is committed to meeting EU(European Union) targets for non-carbon energy generation.

Against this background, the fact that there is an argument within the Government over whether to publish an official report on wind farms impact on the countryside becomes even more extraordinary. The two parties in the coalition government are in disagreement over what it should say.

We have some advice for the two parties :publish the report ,and let the country be the judge. Even if it contains evidence that wind farms are harmful, it will hardly be a pleasant surprise to people who do not like them. Equally, supporters must argue their case by acknowledging the concerns and explaining why they are either misplaced or worthy of much attention.

The suggestion that further negotiations are to take place to produce an “acceptable” report suggests that the politics of coalition government are doing the country harm in a certain way. Given the sensitivities involved ,all the information should be available so that people can reach their own conclusions, rather than being left with the suspicion that facts are being replaced by political beliefs.

【1】We call learn from the first paragraph that________.

A.energy policy catches much attention of the public

B.the residents are in favor of the expansion of wind farms

C.many village communities are satisfied with the subsidies

D.the planning laws offer great benefits to the residents

【2】Supporters think that the expansion of wind power_____.

A.is more rapid than that of carbon-based power

B.guarantees an increase in energy output

C.is expected to be much better than that of nuclear Dower

D.agrees with EU targets for non-carbon energy generation

【3】It can be inferred from the passage that_________.

A.an official report will settle the energy problem

B.the two parties are divided over the issue of wind farms

C.the two parties have agreed on a further negotiation

D.political beliefs concerning energy issue go against facts

【4】Which of the following reflects the author’s opinion?

A.Increase political impact on energy policy.

B.Release a statement of supporters on wind farms.

C.Let the nation judge the facts about wind power.

D.Leave the two parties to reach their own conclusions.
