二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The morning of March 2, 2012, was a busy one for the students in Mrs. Goodknight’s class in Henryville, Indiana. There was morning meeting with poems to read, jokes to share, and tests to prepare for. “It was just an ordinary day,” says student Lyric Darling, 12.

At noon, while students played basketball under a sunny sky, a huge tornado (龙卷风) was forming 50 miles away. Around 2:25 p.m., 20 minutes before school was supposed to let out, a huge tornado touched down in Fredericksburg, 20 miles away. As word spread, parents rushed to the school. Teachers rushed to get kids onto buses or into waiting cars. By 2:45, the skies were darkening.

“I was crying,” says Lyric. “All around me, kids were crying.” Two buses returned to the school with students whose parents had not been home. Teachers brought the kids to the office, where they all took cover under desks. Suddenly the power went out. And then the tornado attacked the school, filled with wood and trees and glass. The tornado was over the school for less than one minute. In that time, it almost completely destroyed the school. Teachers were about to lead the group out of the office when a second tornado was upon them. When it finally ended, the group made its way out of the building.

Over the next few hours, parents arrived, overjoyed to find their children. The next day, it was clear: All of Henryville’s people were safe.

There were so many sad and frightening stories. Some students saw the tornado with their own eyes. Some lost their homes. But many described how the community (社区) came together to help and support each other. “You learn what’s important,” Mrs. Goodknight says.

1When did the tornado hit the school?

    A. In the morning. B. At noon.

    C. Around 2:25. D. After 2:45.

2What did the teachers do in the face of the tornado?

    A. They asked all the students to take cover under desks.

    B. They told parents to wait for their kids at home.

    C. They sent all the students to their homes.

    D. They helped the students get on buses.

3We can learn from the text that the tornado _____.

    A. got many students killed B. caused great damage to the school

    C. lasted for a few minutes D. made the community feel hopeless

  • 27、   The striking bright blues, yellows, and oranges of poison tree frogs are a typical example of warning coloration, sending a message to predators (捕食者) to stay away. But somewhat counterintuitively (反直觉地), these colors may be helping the frogs hide in plain sight, according to a new study.

These frogs live on the forest floor in the lowland rainforests of South America's Guiana Shield. The frogs are blue-black with a bright yellow ring around their head and back, which may be broken or joined to form a figure eight. Like a fingerprint, the pattern is unique to each frog.

Predators generally learn that such brightly colored frogs are poisonous and tend to avoid them. But this doesn't always work. Foolish predators ignore the warning, while some birds and snakes seem to be able to eat poisonous frogs with few ill effects.

So researchers wondered whether these poison frogs have another way of protecting themselves — camouflage (保护色). To find out, they first tested computational models of predator vision on pictures of the frogs. Their results suggested that although the frogs are obvious at close range, their colors and patterns blend (融合) with the rainforest background as viewing distance increases.

To test those results, they placed model frogs on different backgrounds in a rainforest to see how wild predators reacted. Predators attacked the frogs more often when they were placed atop a picture of plain soil or a colored paper square, but less often when they were on the actual rainforest floor.

And humans seem to fall for the trick, too. People who saw pictures of frogs in the rainforest took longer to spot the real frogs at a distance than a frog that had been altered (使变样) so that it didn't have the same colors and patterns. Together, this suggests that although these poison frogs are highly visible at close range, from far away their colors blend together for the perfect rainforest camouflage. The researchers consider that the frog's pattern is made up of a specific distribution of colors to give it the best of both worlds.

1What does the new study about poison tree frogs focus on?

    A. How their predators catch them.

    B. How their bright colors protect them.

    C. What their bright colors are.

    D. What their predators are.

2What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?

    A. Summarize the previous paragraph.

    B. Use examples to support the topic.

    C. Add some background information.

    D. Introduce a new topic for discussion.

3Which one has the similar meaning to the underlined word “range” in Para4?

    A. distance B. pace C. thought D. limit

4What can be learnt about the results achieved by the researchers?

    A. They disagreed with previous research findings.

    B. They changed their research direction.

    C. They needed more research data support.

    D. They confirmed their expectation.

  • 28、   The oldest and most common source of renewable energy known to man, biomass(生物质) is one of the most important forms energy production in the United States and elsewhere. Since such a wide variety of biomass materials is everywhere — from trees and grasses to agricultural and city — life wastes —biomass promises to play a continuing role in providing power and heat for millions of people around the world.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists(UCS), biomass is a kind of renewable energy source that produces no carbon dioxide(二氧化碳), because the energy it contains comes from the sun. When plant matter is burned, it gives off the sun’s energy. In this way, biomass serves as a sort of natural battery(电池) for storing the sun’s energy. As long as biomass is produced continuously —with only as much grown as is used— the “battery” lasts forever.

According to the Energy Information Administration, biomass has been one of the leading renewable energy sources in the United States for several years running through 2007, making up between 0.5 and 0.9 percent of the nation’s total electricity supply. In 2008-although the numbers aren’t all in yet-wind power probably took over first place because of the rapid development of wind farms across the country.

Producing power from biomass helps reduce some 11 million tons of carbon dioxide each year. Some homeowners also try to make their own heat by using biomass materials. Such practice may save homeowner’s money, but it also produces a lot of pollution. So, the best way is to encourage power plants to use it.

1We learn from the text that in 2008 ______.

A.Wind power would be the leader of renewable energy.

B.there was a rapid growth of electricity production

C.biomass might become the main energy source

D.0.5~0.9 of power supply came from biomass

2Why does the author encourage power plants to use biomass?

A.To prevent the waste of energy.

    B.To increase production safety.

    C.To reduce pollution.

    D.To save money.

3Where does the text probably come from?

A.A research plan. B.A science magazine

C.A book review. D.A business report.

  • 29、A young woman sits down at the piano. Her long flowing brown hair frames a friendly face. And then she begins to sing. Her unexpectedly mature voice attracted everyone in the room. This is Norah Jones, award-winning singer and songwriter.

Norah Jones was born on March 30, 1979, in New York City. She is the daughter of the legendary Rxdyi Shankar, a very famous guitar player; but Norah was brought up entirely by her mother Sue. At 4 years old, she and her mother moved to the Dallas suburb, Texas. Her earliest musical influence came from her mother’s extensive LP collection. She began singing in church choirs at age five, took piano lessons two years later, and briefly played alto saxophone in junior high.

In the course of serving customers and laying tables in a fast restaurant, Jones soon started a band in which she was a lead singer, of course, and played piano as well. In October 2000, the band ambitiously brought a demo to EMI Blue Note Records.

At a meeting with Blue Note president Bruce in the following year, Jones played her three-song tape, hoping to earn a break. Bruce was so impressed with this young girl’s talents that he signed her on the spot. After a year of work, Norah Jones released her debut album, Come Away with Me. Norah Jones has already sold 2.6 million copies of the album, which is 10 times more than any album in Blue Note history. Despite the lack of advertisement, her album was inching its way up the music charts while the debut single Don’t Know Why was climbing up the Adult Top 40 Chart.

The singer already enjoyed a success at the Grammy Awards in 2003, where she picked up five trophies in the major categories(Album of the Year, Record of the Year Trophy for Don’t Know Why, Best New Artist, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Don’t Know Why, and Best Pop Vocal Album).
