  • 26、   Have you ever considered volunteering? And do you want to know how to volunteer? If so, please follow the three steps before you enjoy it.

Pick an organization.1 You're likely to be happier and volunteer longer at an organization that supports a cause (事业) you care about. For example, if you're interested in animal welfare, maybe you want to volunteer at an animal shelter. Much like job search sites, you can also use volunteer websites like Volunteer Match or Serve.gov to help you find volunteer opportunities in your area. If you still can't narrow down where you want to volunteer, start asking people you know where they volunteer.2

Know what you can offer. First identify your sill. For example, you could volunteer to write something for local nonprofits (非营利组织) if writing is your style.3You need to be sure how much time you can give to an organization based on your other arrangements. If you try to do too much, you' re more likely to give up.

4Treat the application (申请) like a job. Spend some time preparing for the interview, much as you would go for a job interview. It is also a time for you to measure whether the organization is suitable for you. Ask what's expected of volunteers.5 Start volunteering slowly. That is, it's better to try just a little bit of time at first to see if you like volunteering at the organization.

    A.Apply and get started.

B.Be willing to improve your own ability.

C.Then do remember to go over your weekly schedule.

D.You should focus on the causes that make you interested in.

E.You may find one of them has the perfect opportunity for you.

F.First search for the best organization nearby, and then decide what to offer.

G.For example, volunteers at a museum may be expected to learn parts of the galleries.

  • 27、   My dad was a farmer in the Midwest and he spent his winters selling insurance. Dad could really talk up anyone and his favorite thing to do was find out their income. Once we were at Chicago's O'Hare airport. Dad was sitting with me as I waited for my flight to Fort Lauderdale. A Russian guy who sat down next to my dad could not speak a word of English but this did not stop my dad. He found out his business, how many children he had and of course how much he made.

I used to be a little embarrassed by this, but I changed later. It was in the last year of dad's life. As I was home visiting with my husband and twins and I was in the car with my mom, she told me a story about how she was in the doctor's office with dad and how he was his usual self-talking away to the others in the waiting room. She said he started talking to this young man in a wheel chair who could not talk, could not move his arms or head, really couldn't do anything. But dad was asking questions and got the young man to smile in response. And he carried on like that with the disabled man till he was called back to the doctor's office. When the young man and his father got up to see the doctor, the father of the young man came over and shook my dad's hands and said, "Thank you for speaking to my son. Most people just turn away when they see him.'

My father ended up dying later that month, a sudden heart attack. Fortunately, all the 9 children of his had been home that summer to visit. I told this story at his funeral(葬礼). Truly, my dad was one who never knew a stranger.

1What was the author's dad most interested in when talking with strangers?

    A.What fields they worked in.

    B.What insurance they bought.

    C.How much they made yearly.

    D.How many children they had.

2The young man's father thanked the author's dad for .

A.calling in the doctor in time

    B.chatting with his disabled son

    C.comforting the other patients

D.teaching his disabled son to smile

3Why did the author tell the story mentioned in Paragraph 2 at her dad's funeral?

    A.To well remember her dad.

    B.To entertain the whole family.

    C.To introduce her dad's business.

D.To change strangers, opinion of her dad.

  • 28、   Where in the world would you most like to live? According to an annual statistics by the Economist Intelligence Unit, you should think about Vienna The magazine again rated it as one of the world's “most livable” cities. Winning for the second year in a row, the Austrian capital scored top marks for all three categories: culture, environment and infrastructure.

    Culture

Beating more popular cities like London and New York, Vienna has culture as its trump card (王牌). Whether your passion is art, music or history, Vienna has something for you. The Kunsthistorisches national museum has one of Europe's largest art collections, including the world's largest collection of works by Dutch artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Meanwhile, the Hofburg Imperial Palace is free to explore. Music lovers can enjoy Vienna's Annual Summer Night Concert, played by the Vienna Philharmonic (爱乐乐团). It attracts over 10.000 people-what else can you expect from the home of Mozart?

    Environment

As well as being a cultural mecca (胜地), Vienna's environment are world-class. The city has many green areas, such as the Neue Donau hiking tail, and an average PM 2.5 level of just 18, which is far below the international standard, according to the WHO.

    Infrastructure

This was, in part, achieved by Vienna's transport system. In 2013 the government introduced the euro-a-day system to get more people to use regional trains. It worked! Over half of the residents have annual travel cards, making it both reliable and cheap by European standards. Not to mention, you can take a tram and get up close with Vienna's architectural landmarks, like the Burg Theatre and St. Stephan's Cathedral. Austrian author Karl Kraus famously said, “The streets of Vienna are paved with culture, the streets of other cities with asphalt (柏油).” So if you're looking for a safe cultural city, Vienna could be your best choice.

1Where can a music lover go in Vienna?

A.To the Kunsthistorisches National Museum. B.To the Hofburg Imperial Palace.

C.To the Vienna's Annual Summer Night Concert. D.To the St. Stephan's Cathedral.

2What can we know about Vienna according to the passage?

A.Vienna was awarded as one of the world's “most livable” cities for the first time.

B.Vienna is one of the popular cities which are full of cultural atmosphere.

C.The PM 2.5 level in Vienna is just above the international standard.

D.People can visit Vienna's architectural landmarks by using regional trains.

3What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Vienna is an ancient city with modem facilities.

B.People can experience different lifestyles in Vienna.

C.Vienna is not as developed as other cities.

D.Vienna is a destination for people who like culture.

  • 29、   Ishikawa Yumi had to work eight hours every day and her employer insisted that she should be in heels(高跟鞋)at work."Why do we have to hurt our feet at work, when men can wear flat shoes?"she complained on Twitter. The tweet exploded.

Encouraged, she gathered 18,800 signatures on a request calling for a ban on employers requiring women to wear high heels, which she handed in to the government last June.Ms Ishikawa became the face of the KuToo campaign.

More than 60%of Japanese women with jobs have been forced to put their feet into heels at work or have witnessed women partners having to,according to a survey.Female workers at a department store, must walk around the shop in 5cm heels. The former defence minister,Inada Tomomi, had to struggle about in heels even on the deck of a visiting American aircraft carrier.

The government made no quick reply.A former labour minister, who received Ms Ishikawa's request last year, insists that wearing high heels at work is"necessary and appropriate".The request itself has received no official reply so far.Japan is the second lowest out of the 29 rich countries in equality for women in the workplace.

But Japanese companies are slowly taking measures to improve the situation. In late March Japan Airlines announced that its female flight attendants can kick off their heels and replace skirts with trousers if they choose.AU three big mobile-phone operators have relaxed their rules on heels.Ms Ishikawa is working together with a shoe company to produce beautiful heel-less shoes."Society is changing,”says Ms Ishikawa.“We can't be ignored."Pointless rules about footwear may soon be gone.

A.Japanese women rarely get their feet hurt at work.

B.Ms Ishikawa's tweet gained much attention from the public.

NASA is on a journey to Mars, with a goal of sending humans to the Red Planet in the 2030s. That journey is already well under way.

For decades, the agency and its partners have sent orbiters, landers and rovers(探测器), 1 increasing our knowledge about the Red Planet and paving the way for future human explorers. The Curiosity rover has gathered radiation data to help us protect future astronauts, and the upcoming Mars 2020 rover will study the 2 of Martian resources, including oxygen.

Building on the robotic legacy(遗产), the human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds(门槛), each with 3 challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant, the Proving Ground, and Earth Independent.

Earth Reliant explorations is 4 on research aboard the International Space Station. The orbiting microgravity laboratory serves as a world - class test bed for the technologies and communications systems needed for human missions to deep space. Astronauts are learning about what it takes to live and work in space for long periods of time, improving our understanding of how the body changes in space and how to protect astronauts' health.

Next, we move into the Proving Ground, 5 a series of missions near the moon called “cislunar space” to test the capabilities we will need to live and work at Mars. Astronauts on the space station are only hours away from Earth, but the proving ground is days away, a(n) 6 stepping stone to a Mars mission, which will be months away from home.

Also in the 2020s, we’ll send astronauts on a year-long mission into this deep space proving ground, confirming habitation and testing our 7 for Mars.

Finally, we become Earth Independent, building on the knowledge 8 on the space station and in deep space to send humans to low-Mars orbit in the early 2030s.

This phase will also test the entry, descent(降落)and landing techniques needed to get to the Martin surface and study what's needed for in-situ resource utilization or "living off the land". NASA is already studying the 9 "Exploration Zones" on Mars that would offer compelling science research and provide resources our astronauts can use.

There are challenges to 10 Mars, but we know they are solvable. We are well on our way to getting there, landing there, and living there.

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over the world. For example, cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe and poisonous gas is given off by factories. Trees on the hills have been cut down and waste water is being poured continuously into rivers. Furthermore, wherever we go today, we can find rubbish carelessly disposed(处理)

There are different kinds of pollutants, each of which comes from different sources. It is necessary to identify the source of pollution, in order to make a policy to get rid of them. Different products, processes and activities of our industrialized world together form the major source of pollution.

The forms of pollution can be mainly divided into three kinds—solidsliquid and gas. These pollutants have greatly damaged our planet and continue to do so. In factpollution is threatening our existence. The whole ecological balance of the earth is changing. Massive destruction of environment has brought about negative effects and even posed a great threat to man’s existence.

We must face the situation that exists and take action to solve our environmental problems. For instance, new laws must be passed to place strict control over industrial pollution; the public must receive the education about the danger of pollution and raise their awareness of protecting the environment and so on.

The earth is our home and we have the duty to take care of it for ourselves and our later generations. Fortunately, more and more people have realized these problems. Measures have been taken to deal with these situations by the government. And laws have been passed to stop pollution, I hope the problems will be solved in the near future and our home will become better and better.
