二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Unless you are fortunate enough to know an NBA player, Ryan Martin is probably the best basketball player you'll ever meet. Unlike those who fly up and down the court (球场),however, Martin is forced to take a different approach; he doesn't have legs.

Martin, a 33-year old man, is a professional wheelchair basketball player. His achievements have taken him halfway around the world to play in Spain for the last seven years. There he made a comfortable living playing basketball and working with some of the greatest athletes in the world.

“A good wheelchair player can make $ 50,000 a year, while a star can make six figures,” said Martin. What's more, he couldn't see his family for months and European cities were unfriendly to the disabled. He also had to learn Spanish. Martin, however, overcame those drawbacks(困难).

He started by playing basketball when he was 12. It didn't take long for him to fall in love with the sport and, after graduating from Somers High, he attended Southwest Minnesota State University on a basketball scholarship. In college, he scored over 1 ,000 points in his career and set several school records.

And he works as hard—if not harder—than any other professional athlete. “He destroys me,” said Gina Navarra, who works out with Martin on occasion. “What he does amazes me.”

Martin also recognizes that, at age 33, he's in the back end of his career. With that in mind, he has been focusing more and more on his foundation.

“I have 12 brothers and sisters. College gave me a true sense of achievement. The foundation is designed to give those with disabilities the opportunity to realize the dreams that I once had,” Martin said.

“I'm not saying that out of a sense of pity,” he said. “I realize how fortunate I am to have achieved what I have. But I want to open doors for people.”

1What was Ryan Martin's life like in Spain?

    A.Free. B.Boring. C.Difficult. D.Bittersweet.

2How was Ryan Martin's performance in college?

A.He stood out in basketball. B.He failed to make a record.

C.He was weak in his studies. D.He never won a scholarship.

3Why has Ryan Martin been working for the foundation?

A.To help those in need. B.To finish his basketball career.

C.To earn more money for his family. D.To learn basketball skills from other players.

4Which of the following words best describe Ryan Martin?

A.Honest and responsible. B.Ambitious and sensitive.

    C.Reliable and knowledgeable. D.Determined and warm-hearted.

  • 27、Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving is the start of the holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, so the day after is a Friday. This day has come to be known as Black Friday. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year since 2005.

Most stores offer great deals on Black Friday. They open their doors in the small hours of the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts. Some items like TVs are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.

Black Friday is a great time to get good deals. The problem is that there are not enough low-priced items to go around. Each store may only have a few. These items are in high demand. People stand in long lines to get such great deals. They may line up hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price on a TV or laptop, but not everyone who wants one will get one. Some people leave disappointed.

The situation can be tense(紧张的). Some Black Friday events have been violent. Large, eager crowds have trampled(践踏) workers. Fights have broken out over toys or people cutting in line. People have shot one another over parking spots. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan on going, expect large crowds and a bit of pushing and shoving.

So where does the name "Black Friday" come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it drew. In the 1960s, spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.

Now people all over the country take part in the event known as Black Friday. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the U.K., Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Costa Rica Black Friday is known as "Viernes Negro." And in Mexico, stores offer an annual weekend of discounts. They call it "El Buen Fin," which means "the good weekend" in Spanish. I guess the language of savings is universal.

1Why do stores set prices so low on some items that they lose money?

A.They want people to enjoy the holidays.

B.They are generous at the beginning of the holiday season.

C.They hope people will buy other gifts while they are in the store.

D.They are trying to get rid of old items.

A.People stand in long lines on Black Friday.

B.Black Friday is a really disappointing time of the year

C.Black Friday is the best time of the year to get good deals.

D.Black Friday deals are limited and not everyone will get one.

3Which best describes the overall structure of the fifth paragraph?

A.Order of time.  B.Problem and solution.

C.Order of importance.    D.Compare and contrast.

  • 29、I can’t remember a time when my bedroom didn’t have a bookshelf. From Dr. Suess to Mother Goose, I had all kinds of books that progressed in size as I got older.

My earliest memory of books was sitting on my bed at night with my mom reading to my older brother and me from C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, or Madeleine L’Engle. And my first beloved book that was all mine was a children’s book about being a chosen child. As an adopted (收养的) child, this book helped me learn that my family was my very own because they chose me. As I got older, the books got thicker and more difficult. The first set of books I ever bought with my own money was L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables.

When in elementary school, there was a book catalog ( 目录) that would come out. We could take it home and have our parents help us order new books. Then the books would be sent to the school. There was nothing better than getting my little bag of books.

My love for science fiction was deepened by my older brother’s love for it. Beyond being the person to introduce me to Star Trek and Doctor Who, it was his copy of The Sword of Shannaraby Terry Brooks that got me really interested in science fiction.

I read classics in high school. The first time I had the thought that I wanted to be a writer was after reading Edgar Allan Poe’s work. And his use of words floored me. I remember using his word “phantasmagorical” for a senior paper. Yeah, it’s no wonder I ended up an English major and English teacher passing on my love for the written word and the books students could hold in their hands.

【1】What was the author’s earliest memory of books?

A.She read some classics by herself.

B.She was thirsty for children’s books.

C.She was often read to by her mother.

D.She borrowed books from her brother.

【2】What happened after the author read her first favorite book?

A.She loved her family much more.

B.She hoped to have her own home.

C.She planned to read more books.

D.She found that she was adopted.

【3】How did the author feel after getting some books on the book catalog?

    A.lucky.

    B.excited.

    C.surprised.

    D.disappointed.

【4】How did the author become interested in science fiction?

A.By reading Star Trek with her brother.

B.By being introduced to Doctor Who.

C.By talking about it with her brother.

D.By reading The Sword of Shannara.
