  • 26、   LONDON — To get a mobile phone as a gift for 14thbirthday, Lucy declared to her parents that everyone else has one. Her parents gave in.

Curious to know how her daughter would use the phone, Jane Bidder, the mother, followed Lucy to the school bus in the morning. The bus seats 20, of whom half have a mobile phone. One rings and several adolescent owners fumble with their bags.

Many parents have just come to realize that the mobile phone is no longer for traveling businessmen — it is as likely to be found in school bags.

The mobile phone seems to have become something essential for today’s teens in Britain, according to a survey published last week, by NOP, a leading market research company in Britain. Research found that 66 percent of 16-year-olds now have access to a mobile phone.

The mobile phone has been turned into a secret messaging service by teen users. When they are talking on the mobile, their parents are not able to eavesdrop on the second line.

The interview with 2,019 young people aged 7 to 16 found that they favor the text messaging service because they offer a secret way of keeping in touch. The days of secret notes in the classroom are dying out.

For example, “cul” means “see you later”; “lol” means “laugh out loud’; and “2nite” is the abbreviation of “tonight”. All these are based on shorthand phrases on the Internet.

Many schools have banned students using mobile phones. But they are not very successful. Still phones ring in the class and disturb study. Besides, people are worried about the health risk to kids using mobile phones.

Scientists believe children are especially vulnerable (易受伤的) mobile radiation.

1The story of Lucy is told to show us   .

A.British parents always meet their children’s needs

C.British kids have good relationship with their parents

B.Teenagers want to have their own secret.

  • 27、To the book lovers, nothing beats walking through a bookshop and looking at all the covers, picking large heavy books up and turning them over, the smell of ink on paper, conversations with strangers about authors. With the coming of the online book buying and e-books, many have predicted(预测) that the bookstores will disappear. And we’re grateful that there are plenty of beautiful bookstores still out there.

    El Ateneo Grand Splendid

Designed for Max Glucksmann, a pioneer of the music and film industries, this wonderful theater space was opened in 1919. The former theater now serves as a flagship store; more than 1 million people visit El Ateneo Grand Splendid every year.

The Book Barge is a 60-foot canal boat bookshop. Inspired by the Slow Food movement, the operator Sarah Henshaw says, “We hope to help develop a less hurried lifestyle of leisurely (慢悠悠的) pleasures, cups of tea, conversations, culture and something like these.”

For those who regard bookstores with great respect, welcome to Selexyz Dominicanen, which now offers many kinds of books. The big space was used to store bicycles not long ago. But then the building was given interior (内部的) decoration, and the result is really a great surprise.

    La Caverne aux Livres

Few things make as romantic a pairing as books and trains. At La Caverne aux Livres in Auvers-sur-Oise, northwestern of Paris, an old postal train station and several train cars have become home to used books for sale. • 28、Sooner or later, many families will face the situation of moving. The experience can be very bad for kids, who may not be a part of the decision to move and may not understand it. You can take steps to make the whole process (过程) easier for everyone.

Many kids like to stay in familiar places. So as you consider a move, weigh the benefits of that change against the comfort that neighborhood, school, and social life give your kids. If your family has recently dealt with a big life change, such as death, you may want to put off a move to give your children time to accept the fact.

The decision to move may be out of your hands, perhaps because of a new job or money problems. Even if you're not happy about the move, try to keep a positive attitude to it. During the move, parents' attitude can greatly influence kids.

No matter what the results are, the most important way to prepare kids to move is to talk about it. Try to give your children as much information about the move as possible. You can ask kids to join in the planning such as house hunting or the search for a new school. This can make the change feel less like it's being forced on them. If you're moving across town, try to take your children to visit the new house and the new neighborhood.

A move can have many problems, but good things also come from this kind of change. Your family might grow closer and you may learn more about each other by going through it together.

【1】According to the passage kids may feel a move is a bad experience because ________.

A.they don't like the moving process

B.they may feel they're forced to do so

C.they think their parents don't care about them

D.they often feel lonely in a new school

【2】In which situation does the writer advise to put off a move?

    A.The new neighborhood isn't safe.

    B.The parents have money problems.

C.A family member has just died.

    D.The kid's birthday is coming.

【3】When making the move easier for kids, ________is most important.

    A.letting them choose a school

B.trying not to show them the bad parts of a move

C.telling them as much information as possible

D.promising to choose a new house with them

【4】The writer wrote this passage mainly to tell us ________.

A.why parents should talk with kids often

B.how to prepare children for a move

C.how a move can change the family

D.what we should do before a move

  • 29、   Sometimes big ideas come in tiny packages. That’s true for Bryan Ware, the founder of the nonprofit organization The Crayon Initiative, which recycles the crayons children use at restaurants to give to children in need.

Ware, who has a background in producing and packaging, went out to dinner with his family one night when he took notice of a box of crayons on the table. The restaurant provided them and his boys used them to color on the paper tablecloth. There was nothing unusual about either of the two things. But Ware thought something more. Ware knew that most of the crayons at restaurants would be thrown away after their first use because people worried that germs on them might cause disease. While the wax of a crayon is easy to clean and doesn’t hold many germs, the wrapping paper is a different story.

So now Ware is trying to improve the situation. After speaking with a friend who works as a child life specialist at the University of San Francisco Medical Center, Ware decides to work with hospitals in the area to bring the crayons to their young patients. We know that child life specialists help sick children deal with the uncertainty of their conditions. They hold a child’s hand during medical treatment or provide food and clothing for his or her family members.

So far, The Crayon Initiative has donated over 20,000 packs of crayons to 38 hospitals in 17 states, but it’s the positive influence, not the number, that matters to Ware. Ware recently received a photo from a family whose daughter had unfortunately passed away. It was a picture of a plastic pencil box, and it was what the girl carried with her through her stay in hospital. Wherever she had to go, this was her little box of stuff to keep her happy. These kinds of stories make the effort all worthwhile for Ware.

1What can we infer from paragraph 2?

A.Ware didn’t think restaurants should provide crayons.

B.Used crayons with wrapping paper hold fewer germs.

C.Restaurants usually provide crayons for kids free of charge.

D.Ware’s idea about his organization came to him by accident.

2What do we know about child life specialists from the passage?

A.They help doctors look for cures for diseases.

B.They provide food and education for young patients.

C.They bring comfort to kids fighting against illness.

D.They need money to help poor kids pay hospital bills.

3Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A.Ways of Achieving a Big Dream

B.Recycling Crayons for a Good Cause

C.A Successful Man and His Magical Crayons

D.Solutions to the Problem of Crayon Pollution

On a broiling afternoon when the men were away at work and all the women napped, I moved through majestic depths of silences, silences so immense I could hear the corn 1. Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
