  • 27、Yosemite National Park has long been a place of inspiration for artists, climbers, and nature lovers.

    Yosemite Falls

Repeatedly coming into view over treetops and around corners as you drive through the valley, the falls look different from every angle, and it’s impossible to take your eyes off. You don’t have to hike or even get out of your car to appreciate this waterfall, but the most complete view of the falls is from the start of the Yosemite Falls hike, along the route on the left side of the river. You can walk right to the bass of the falls with minimum effort and feel the mist sweeping over you.

    Half Dome

Halt Dome is one of Yosemite’s most famous sites and particularly well-know in the climbing world for being one of the first “big climbs”. This granite icon (花岗岩雕像) looks much different depending on the angle you are viewing it from. Looking up at the sheer rock face from the valley, you can appreciate why climbers have been drawn here. The best place to view it is from the lookout at Glacier Point. From here, you get a true picture of the rock and how much higher it stands than the surrounding mountains.

    EI Capitan

Popular among climbers, EI Capitan is a 3,000-footsheer rock face on the north side of Yosemite Valley. Although it may not seem like it, EI Capitan is actually 1,000 feet higher than the face of Half Dome. EI Capitan gained interest with the free solo climb of Alex Honnold in June of 2017, and the Academy Award winning documentary film, Free Solo. He became the first person to climb EI Capitan without ropes, and completely unaided.

    Tunnel View

The most classic view of Yosemite Valley is from Tunnel View. This vista, which will feel very familiar to most climbers, stretches out to EI Capitan on the left, Bridalveil Fall on the right, Half Dome in the distance, and also takes in the lush valley at the base of the huge granite walls. The best time to appreciate this scene is in the afternoon, when the walls are bathed in sunlight.

【1】Which place can you walk to without much effort?

    A.Yosemite Falls.

    B.Half Dome.

    C.EI Capitan.

    D.Tunnel View.

B.They are well received by climbers.

【3】What may attract tourists to Tunnel View?

A.The lush valley of it at the base.

    B.The beautiful afternoon scenery.

C.Easy access to all the tourist spots.

D.The short distance from Half Dome.

  • 28、Reading books can exercise your brain. Kids who started reading at an earlier age go on to perform better on certain intelligence tests, such as analyses of their vocabulary size. As one gets older, it might help slow down or even cease cognitive decline. 【1】 Many Americans don't read frequently. It's time to reverse this trend to give your brain gray matter a good workout.

【2】When you have some down time—you're waiting for a friend, sleeping lightly on the way from or to work, or doing a task that doesn't require your full attention—you can open your text instead of pulling up your favorite smartphone game. 【3】 While paper is still the clear winner in the court of public opinion, science hasn't proven that physical books are better than digital ones.

Academic research has mostly focused on the ability to remember. A study took place in a laboratory setting: Students all read the same text, but some looked at the words on paper and others viewed an on-screen PDF. It turned out that no meaningful difference between the two media existed. As for audiobooks, they affected the brain gray matter somewhat differently. 【4】

Ultimately, if you hope to get a reading habit going, you shouldn't dismiss paper digital, or audio—【5】 Don't be afraid to change things up depending on the occasion.

A.Audiobooks still affect your thoughts and feelings.

B.Go with what makes the most sense for your needs.

C.Words on a page can improve the emotional intelligence.

D.This brings about a great debate: pages vs screens vs audio.

E.Keep a book, e-reader, or audiobook app on you as you go about the day.

F.Despite this, the overall book-reading time for Americans is on the decline.

G.However, they stimulated the brain just as deeply as black-and-white pages.

  • 29、   I read a newspaper article about a new concept. The idea is simple, but revolutionary: combining a residential home for the elderly with a nursery school in the same building. The children and the residents (住户) eat lunch together and share activities such as music, painting and gardening. In the afternoons, the residents enjoy reading stories to the children and, if a child is feeling sad or tired, there is always a kind lap to sit on and a hug.

Nowadays there is less and less contact between the old and the young. There are many reasons for this, including the breakdown of the extended family, working parents with no time to care for aging relations, and smaller flats with no room for grandparents. But the result is the same: increasing numbers of children without grandparents and old people who have no contact with children. It’s a major problem in many societies.

That’s why inter-generation (代际的) programs are growing in popularity all over the world. There are examples of successful actions. Using young people to teach IT skills to older people is one obvious example. Using old people as volunteer assistants in schools is another. One successful scheme in London pairs young volunteers with old people who are losing their sight. The young people help with practical things such as writing letters, reading bank statements and helping with shopping, and the older people can pass on their knowledge and experience to their young visitors. For example, a retired judge may be paired with a teenager who wants to study law.

But it isn’t only the individuals concerned who gain from inter-generational activities. The advantages to society are huge too. If older people can understand and accept the youth of today, there will be less conflict in a community. And we can use the strengths of one generation to help another. Then perhaps getting old won’t be so sad after all.

1Why does the author mention the newspaper article he read?

    A. To argue for a new concept. B. To introduce the topic of the text.

    C. To show his interest in the topic. D. To draw our attention to a social problem.

2What is the purpose of the inter-generational programs?

    A. To ask the old to care for the young.

    B. To teach the young to respect the old.

    C. To bring the old and the young together.

    D. To provide a good job opportunity for the young.

3What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A. The examples of inter-generational activities.

    B. The inter-generational programs all over the world.

    C. The inter-generational programs’ benefits to individuals.

    D. The reasons why inter-generational programs enjoy popularity.

4What may be the best title for the text?

    A. Being old is no more sad.

    B. Offer a warm home for the young.

    C. A new concept in caring for the old is born.

    D. Build bridges between the old and the young.

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

Henry once worked in a middle school in a remote area. He loved to teach the teenagers. He worked to understand what his students were thinking and feeling in order to meet their needs. When a student was struggling, he would work harder to show the child that he or she was capable and cared for. He would try everything in order to help every student achieve success in and out of the classroom. But he would never discover that the impact his small act of kindness had on one student after he left the profession to join the navy,

Henry was teaching science then, there was one girl who sat at the front of the class and was filled with typical middle school pain and anxiety. Her name was Mary. She was a newcomer then. She wasn't accepted by the classmates that soon. She was quiet and kept to herself and always writing a journal during lessons. Henry was looking for a chance to give her a hand but had realized this task was tough.

That class Henry decided to look over her shoulder and see what she was writing. On a small piece of paper he saw the painful words “I am not good enough. I'm ugly. I’m stupid. No one likes me. I hate myself.” The girl was absorbed in her loneliness and sadness and didn't realize she was overseers.

This task was more challenging because he had never seen a young girl was so disappointed and sad. Great teachers knew that putting extra effort, a kind heart and soul into caring for his students made all the difference. Without thinking, Henry snatched (一把抓起) the notebook from her and started writing in it “You're great, you're beautiful, you're intelligent, you're loved”. The opposite of everything she wrote, then handed it back. He smiled at her with encouragement saying nothing.

Mary was surprised at her teacher's behavior. But when she read the words he wrote, tears welled down her face.

I sat in the breakfast corner with my four-year-old son, Matthew, trying to ignore the ache in my stomach. I was still recovering from a surgery. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless , I’d always wanted five or six kids. Three surgeries later, that dream would never come true.

Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to the sliding door. Sure enough, there was a white dove (鸽子)seated on a rubber tree. It sat there a few moments, and then flew away. I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.

When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back. This time it was with a mate carrying twigs(嫩枝).”Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They're going to make a nest.” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on the top of the rubber tree. Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he'd run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. As much as I was grieving(感到悲伤),I couldn't help but look forward to the doves’   visits too. We watched their progress as if it were a real-life soap opera unfolding before us. I’d do the cooking and for a moment, my pain disappeared, replaced by joy.

Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the rubber tree's broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew through, throwing the doves' nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn't blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch(从头开始), though the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.
