  • 27、   You try to keep your eyes wide open while watching a basketball match or a marvelous firework show in case you might miss something exciting in just the blink of an eye. But in fact, humans blink about 15 times per minute on average. Have you ever missed anything because you blinked? Probably not. Why is that?

According to a new study published in journal Current Biology in September, our brain has the ability to “skip” the temporary darkness that we see when we blink. It can keep visual information for a short period of time and then put it together to form a conclusive image without interruption.

In order to understand how this works, a group of scientists at the German Primate Center and the University Medical Center Gottingen in Germany conducted an experiment.

In the study, the participants were asked to look at patterns on a screen whose orientation(方向)could be shown in different ways, such as horizontally( 水平的) or vertically( 垂直的).When one pattern was about to disappear and the next one was about to come, the participants had to indicate the direction that the next pattern would be oriented in.

The researchers found that when the orientations of two patterns didn’t match, the medial prefrontal cortex(内侧前额叶皮层)--- the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory---was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction.

“The medial prefrontal cortex adjust current visual information with previously obtained information, and thus enables us to see the world with more stability, even when we briefly close our eyes to blink,” Caspar Schwiedrzik explained in Science Daily. He is the first author of the study and also a scientist at the German Primate Center.

1What ‘s the author’s intention to write the first paragraph?

    A.To bring out the topic.

B.To show the importance of blink.

C.To show some interesting event in his life.

D.To give suggestions on when we should blink.

2Why can’t we miss anything when blinking?

A.Because the time of the blink of an eye is too short.

B.Because our brain has the ability to “skip” the darkness.

C.Because our eyes can keep information and put it together.

D.Because the medial prefrontal cortex has a special function.

3The underlined word “activated” probably means .

    A.be injured B.be useless

    C.start working D.start being noticed

  • 28、How Arts Contribute to Our Economy

When it comes to arts, most people tend to imagine the end product, beautiful paintings, wonderful pieces of music, or award-winning performances in the theater. But arts groups bring broader value to communities. 1.

The arts create jobs that help develop the economy. Any given performance takes a tour bus full of artists, technical experts, managers, musicians, or writers to create an appealing piece of art.2. Another group of folks is needed to help market the event. Digital media experts, photographers, booking agents and promoters(推广者) are hired to sell tickets and promote the event.

    3. Here is an example. In 2005, when the Bishop Arts Theatre was donated to a town in Dallas, the location was considered a poor area. After putting more than $1 million in reconstructing the building, they began producing a full season of theater performances, jazz concerts, and year-round arts education programs. Soon, waves of jazz lovers flooded in to enjoy an evening. Then, came a series of work force outside the arts industry, including accountants, marketers, hotel managers, printers, and other kinds of workers. 4.

Definitely, arts are efficient economic drivers when supported. It’s wrong to have prejudice against majors in art and assume arts groups cannot make a profit. But to stay in business, arts groups must produce returns. 5. But those who truly understand the economic effect and can work to change the patterns can create a wide range of career possibilities.

A.Here are some tips on how to achieve profits in the arts.

B.Here are some ways in which the arts benefit our economy.

C.A successful arts neighborhood creates a chain effect throughout a community.

D.These people earn a living income for their professional knowledge and skills.

E.No doubt the theater has contributed to the area’s development and economic growth.

F.To be major in the arts, you need to have an understanding of the brilliant potential of your choice.

G.If you are a student considering taking up the arts, chances are you have been ill-advised to have a plan B.

  • 29、   Modern buildings are set up on a large scale in the city. Should they be allowed to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. All historical buildings are not attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons — why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to be the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my hometown where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old ones too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的)and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

1What is the author's view of historical buildings in Paragraph 1?

    A.Some of them are unattractive.

B.Many of them are too old to preserve.

C.They don't offer the historic feel of an area.

D.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.

2Which of the following does the author mostly agree with?

A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.

B.Buildings shouldn't fit in with their surroundings.

C.Some old buildings have reduced the interest of the area they are in.

D.No one knows why people are against new buildings.

3The underlined words “move things forward” mean _______.

    A.destroy old buildings

B.put things in a different place

    C.respect people's feelings

    D.choose new architectural style

4What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To explain why people dislike change.

B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.

C.To answer the questions people show great interest in.

D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

In 2000, when I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother, and I were coming back from a picnic. That was our usual weekend adventure, but unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway. There, we saw two adult geese () and a young goose. The adults were surprised by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly and couldn’t follow. We are no strangers to the ways of wildlife, so we knew to avoid physical contact with the young goose out of fear that it would stay with us and be lost to its family forever.

Hours passed, and night fell. With it came the coldness. The tiny little thing was walking around our yard and it was clear that the goose needed protection and warmth. At that point, we knew we had to help, аnd wе brоught hіm іntо оur bасk роrсh (门廊).

We all pretty much slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to shoo (赶走) the goose to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to take him. We kept this up for five days, but no luck. By then, the young goose had clearly decided we were his new family, so we had to give him a name. My sister Joanna called him Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop. We also decided that Peeper was a boy. I don’t know why; it just felt right.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months until almost a year passed. Peeper slept in our back porch each night. My dad would clean all the goose droppings daily. He would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a loop () around the house, coming back again once the porch was clean.
