二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   It was the night before my election. I was running for Sophomore Vice President.

I had prepared a performance for the election--a funny boxing match. The fight had popular moves as seen in Dodge Ball, Iron Man, and Super Smash Brothers. In the end, I would perform my famous move the Power-Punch from Hot Rod.

My friend Cheyenne and I rehearsed (排练) the fight for hours, but the fight would not be a fight without music and sound effects. This is where my brother came in. He stayed up all night to work on that soundtrack. And when my computer’s disk burner (刻录机) went out at 6 in the morning, he spent a college student’s week’s worth of incomes to replace it.

Why would he go into all that trouble? Because he knew that out of all the other important things he could be doing, this was imperative to me. He knew because it was once important to him. Having graduated from Layton High just a year earlier, he knew what it was like to be in the center of people's attention. He knew how fun high school could be, and he wanted me to have a great experience.

I ended up losing the election, but that day changed my world forever. The lesson my brother taught me became my most important belief. But it wasn't until I had a similar opportunity that I really understood why he cared so much.

What did it take for me to understand? It was the performance. The rest of the cast and I would rehearse every day after school for 6 months all for what? The chance to perform a play eight times. As I came out on that stage for the first time and listened to the laughter, I was filled with joy. By the end of the play, the audience broke into tears, and so did we. What happened? We had the sweet opportunity of giving them an unforgettable theatre moment -- a moment to laugh, reflect, and shed tears.

1Why did the author prepare a performance?

    A. To prove he had a gift for performing.

    B. To introduce moves from some movies.

    C. To celebrate his success after the election.

    D. To increase his chance of winning the election.

2How did the author's brother respond when the computer’s disk burner went out?

    A. He decided to give up in the end.

    B. He bought one with his own money.

    C. He found another way to make music.

    D. He borrowed one from a college student.

3What does the underlined word "imperative” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A. Important B. Pleasant

    C. Difficult D. Useful

4What did the author most probably learn from his brother?

    A. We should try our best to do everything well.

    B. We should spread the kindness we have received.

    C. Family members should always support each other.

    D. Happiness comes from what we do to brighten others' life.

  • 28、My first newsroom was in a grand building with tall arched windows that dominated a street corner in the small Midwestern city where I worked. Inside, there was a high ceiling. “Did this use to be a bank?” many visitors would ask. But it had, in fact, always been a newsroom.

I was young and shy when I first went to work there, and it probably took me a month before I talked to any of the other reporters. But eventually, they became my best friends, the core of my social life

My second newsroom was the airy top floor of a historic building in the state capital of Maryland. It was smaller and less grand but far more energizing. My colleagues were older. I learned so much about bow to be a reporter from overhearing their phone interviews.

This past summer, several American newspapers announced they would be closing their newsrooms. Many local newspapers have gone out of business in recent years, victims of declining circulation and shrinking advertising dollars. Then along came the coronavirus pandemic (新冠病毒疫情), and so many of us were sent home to work from there. The pleasant surprise is that we have all succeeded brilliantly in working remotely. But some managers have looked at this success and thought: “Why would we need to return to the newsroom?”

I worry that they are making a big mistake. A physical newsroom sends a powerful message to a community: “We are here for you.” At my first job, strangers could walk fight though the door and straight up my desk. We treasured that visibility.

But I also think about the collaboration (合作)-of the times I would overhear colleagues talking about a story and realize that I had some useful information for them. Sometimes, a colleague would see me in the hall and give me a story idea. I can’t wait to get back to my newsroom.

【1】How did the author benefit from her second newsroom?

B.She made her best friends there.

    A.Journalists worked effectively at home.

    B.Newspaper circulation was increasing.

    C.Newspaper advertising was profitable.

    D.Journalism survived the pandemic.

【3】Why is the author against closing newsrooms?

A.Newsrooms serve as a close tie.

B.She will be out of work as a result.

C.Newspapers will disappear due to it.

D.It is against the will of communities.

  • 29、My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.

Unfortunately, in early May, my father was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother had several business trips, so she couldn’t take care of the garden. I didn’t want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.

One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was upset to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs. There were hundreds of bugs all over them!

I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest store to buy some vegetables.

When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a little bit guilty.

Coming home, my mother saw the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and I admitted, “Dad wanted a salad, but the garden was a disaster. I didn’t want to disappoint him, so I went to the store.” She laughed but promised to help me in the garden and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.

I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a hint of a smile. “Christine, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”

Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you appreciate the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father’s love of gardening.

【1】Why did Christine originally promise she would do the gardening?

A.She was asked by her father to do it.

B.She was interested in growing vegetables.

C.She knew it was important to her father.

D.She wanted to improve her gardening skills.

【2】Which of the following was a problem in the garden?

A.Insects destroyed the lettuce and carrots.

B.Animals often dug holes in the garden.

C.The plants were given too much water.

    D.The vegetables were marked incorrectly.

【3】Why could Christine secretly make the salad from store-bought vegetables?

A.Her mother helped her to buy the vegetables.

B.Her mother regularly helped her to make a spray.

    C.Her father couldn’t see the garden’s progress.

D.Her father went on a business trip at that time.

【4】What did Christine learn through her experience of gardening?

A.Always get ready for a rainy day.

    B.Don’t be disappointed by bugs.

    C.Working alone produces results.

D.Hard work can often be rewarding.

  • 31、For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between ________ countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I ________ and what you do?

Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. ________, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for ________ it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their children’s complete ________. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except ________. Both feel trapped.

In this article, I’ll describe three no-win ________ that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the ________. The first is quarrels over ________ things. Examples include the colour of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s ________ to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.

Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the ________ is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the ________ of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered a(n) ________—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command ________. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they ________ more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.

Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?

Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 1 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 2.

This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 3 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 4 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 5 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.

So why are soft skills so highly 6 for?

With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 7 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 8 career.

Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 9 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 10 in their chosen field.
