二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   If you plan to learn a foreign language, you might think it’s going to be really challenging. You’ve probably heard a lot of talks about how it’s easier to learn languages as a young child, and that learning as an adult can be difficult. You might even know friends or family members who have tried to learn a foreign tongue and failed. That’s because they are surrounded by the failure. We’re here to cheer you up with some good news and inspire you to get started.

The amazing adult brain: whether you can learn languages at any age? Scientists are always learning about the human brain. Decades ago, experts believed that the brain developed during childhood and then kept that way for life. However, modern studies have shown us that the brain has the ability to continually form new neural (神经的) connections throughout adulthood. A 2010 Swedish study tested two groups of people, one in the range of age 21 through 30 and another between 65 and 80. Remarkably, they found no significant differences in neuroplasticity (神经可塑性). In other words, this suggests that it’s possible for you to learn new things at any age.

Besides being possible to learn languages: research also suggests that it improves the adult brain in general. In a 2012 Chinese study, experts looked at a group of adults who were learning Mandarin over a nine-month period. They found that these adults showed improved integrity in their white matter, the part of the brain that allows neural cells to communicate. The better your neural cells communicate, the easier it will be for you to learn new things.

Why may adults have an easier time learning? Children might be blessed with a naturally high degree of neuroplasticity, but that doesn’t mean learning is necessarily easier for them. In fact, adult brains have a number of great qualities that might actually make learning easier, especially if you take advantage of free language learning apps like Mondly.

1Why do some adults fail in the language learning?

    A.Because they have bad memories.

B.Because they have no plans for language learning.

C.Because language learning is too difficult for adults to learn.

D.Because maybe they are influenced by some adults who have failed.

2What can we learn from the text?

A.Children can learn a language more easily.

B.Adults can learn a language even at old age.

C.The learning apps like Mondly are good for children.

D.Adults can learn a language more easily after learning Chinese.

3What will the text refer to next?

A.How to learn a new language for adults.

B.How to use the app Mondly.

    C.How to improve neuroplasticity.

D.How to tell the kids to learn a language.

  • 27、   Air pollution is the world's top killer, a new global air quality index revealed last year. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), 4. 2 million people die each year from outdoor air pollution, and 91 percent of the world's population lives in a place that exceeds the WHO's guideline limits. With that in mind, Imperial College London has teamed up with biochemical tech startup Arborea to test out its biosolar leaf technology, while also demonstrating how sustainable solutions can address the vital environmental and social issues of today in real-world conditions.

So, what is a biosolar leaf and how does it work? The secret is algae(海藻). Arborea researchers developed a cultivation(培养)system that allows microscopic plants like microalgae to grow on large solar panel-like structures that can be installed on land, buildings, and anywhere with a roof in a built-up city to improve the surrounding air quality. Inspired by the natural process of photosynthesis(光合作用)the biosolar panels allow the microorganisms to absorb CO2 from the surrounding area and generate breathable oxygen back out again. And they help produce a nutritious, sustainable plant protein with tiny environmental impact—— Arborea's other focus——at the same time. "When I founded Arborea? my goal was to cope with climate change while addressing the critical issues related to the food system," Arborea founder and CEO Julian Melchiorri said. "This pilot plant will produce sustainable healthy food additives while purifying the air, producing oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from the surrounding environment.”

Melchiorri has already had some success with his astonishing project, the world's first living bionic chandelier(仿生吊灯)which uses the same technology. The light of the chandelier stimulates photosynthesis of the microorganisms on the leaf-shaped modules, absorbing the CO2 inside and releasing oxygen back into the room. The chandelier currently holds pride of place in London's Victoria and Albert Museum's permanent collection.

1Why did the Imperial College London cooperate with Arborea?

A.To study the reason for air pollution in London.

B.To search for the new sustainable energy.

C.To trial the new technology of Arborea.

    D.To settle the social issues.

2What can be learned about the biosolar leaf?

A.It functions just like solar panels.

B.It imitates the natural process of photosynthesis.

C.It is aimed at producing sustainable healthy food.

D.It has been applied in large amounts in our daily life.

3What is the best title for the text?

    A.London's pride—the chandelier

B.The secret of algae found recently

C.An astonishing project benefiting Londoners a lot

D.World's first biosolar leaf to take on air pollution

4Which column of a web page is the text probably taken from?

A.Environment and marine biology. B.Society and development.

C.Science and technology. D.Bionic design and modern life

  • 28、Dear Dale,

I want to be closer to my mom, but whenever I try to share things with her, she doesn’t understand. Skyline

    Dear Skyline,

As we grow up, our interests change a lot. As a teenager, it may just be that your mom and you don’t share the same interests right now. It’s normal for the relationship between teenagers and their parents to become distant for a short while.

If you don’t think your mom understands you or your interests, why not try to get involved in some of hers? If she has a hobby, try to join in with it. For example, if she’s a good cook, ask her to teach you some recipes. If she likes running, go for a run with her.

Likewise(同样地), try to get her involved in the things that you do often. Invite her to go to the movies or to coffee together, or ask her to help you study some time.

Another great way to get to know your mom better is to ask her about her childhood. My mother has lots of great tales about being a teenager in the 1960s, and hearing her share them and laughing at her funny memories always brings us closer together. Ask your mom about her life as a teenager too I bet she’d love to share her stories

There could be many reasons that your mom might seem too busy to do things with you. She could just be tired from a long day of work, or she may have a problem of her own that’s  affecting how she acts toward others.

Whatever happens, don’t worry. She loves you and always will. And hopefully one day soon, you will both understand each other perfectly.

    1What is Skyline’s problem?

A.She doesn’t live close to her mom.

B.She doesn’t share things with her mom.

C.Her mom is too busy to spend time with her.

    D.Her mom doesn’t understand her.

2What does Dale think of Skyline’s problem?

    A.Typical. B.Unusual. C.Strange. D.Tough.

3Why does Dale advise Skyline to ask her mom about her childhood?

A.To encourage her mom to talk to her.

B.To give her mom time to think of the past.

C.To help her know more about her mom.

D.To get her a chance to laugh at her mom.

4What can we infer from Paragraph 5 of Dale’s letter to Skyline?

A.Skyline’s mom has a problem of her own.

    B.Skyline’s mom probably isn’t a good mother.

C.Skyline is badly treated by her mom at home.

D.Skyline probably doesn’t understand her mom.

The Internet E-commerce and globalization are making a new economic age possible. In the future, capitalist markets will largely be replaced by a new kind of economic system based on 1 relationships, contractual arrangements and access rights.

Has the quality of our lives at work, at home and in our communities increased in direct proportion to all the new Internet and business-to-business Internet services being introduced into our lives? I have asked this question of hundreds of CEOs and corporate executives in Europe and the United States. Surprisingly, virtually everyone has said, “No, quiet 2.” They say they are working longer hours, feel more stressed, are more impatient, and are even less civil in their dealings with colleagues and friends-not to mention strangers. And what’s more revealing, they place much of the blame on the very same technologies they are so 3 supporting.

The technological leader promised us that access would make life more convenient. Instead, the very technological wonders that were supposed to 4 us have begun to enslave us in a web of connections from which there seems to be no easy 5.

If an earlier generation was preoccupied with the quest to enclose a vast 6 land, the .com generation, it seems, is more caught up in the colonization of time. Every spare moment of our time is being filled with some form of commercial connection, making time itself the 7 of all resources.

And while we have created every kind of labor-and time-saving device to service our needs, we are beginning to feel like we have less time available to us than any other humans in history. Maybe we need to ask what kinds of connections really 8 in the e-economy age. If this new technology 9 is only about super efficiency, then we risk losing something even precious than time-our sense of what it means to be a(n) 10 human being.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, becoming the first known case of human-animal 1, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Sunday.

Nadia, the 4-year-old Malayan tiger that tested positive, was 2 for the COVID-19 disease after 3 a dry cough along with three other tigers and three lions, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement.

All of the cats are expected to recover, it said. But officials believe this is a unique case because Nadia became sick after 4 to an asymptomatic zoo employee, Paul Calle, chief veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo, told Reuters.

Calle said they did not know which employee infected the tiger. "This is the first time that we have discovered that a person infects the animal and the animal gets sick," Calle said, adding that they planned to share the findings with other zoos and institutions. " I guess 5 we will all have a better understanding as a result.

While the other tigers and lions were also 6 symptoms, the zoo decided to test only Nadia because she was the sickest and  had started to lose her appetite already, and they did not want to 7 all the cats to anesthesia(麻醉), Calle said.

Nadia 8 X-rays, an ultrasound(超声波) and blood tests to try to figure out what was making her sick . They decided to test for COVID-19 9 the surge in cases in New York City, the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States. The first tiger at the zoo, which has been shut since mid-March, began showing 10 of illness on March 27, according to the US Department of Agriculture National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.
