26、 I’ve spent over a year in India, and in those 365 plus days, I’ve learned a lot about getting around Indian cities. My biggest lessons have been learned through being cheated, particularly by taxi and rickshaw (人力车) drivers, but that doesn’t mean those are bad ways to travel, as long as you know what you’re doing. Below are the best ways to get around the city of Delhi, India, and tips for how to keep from being the victim of scams (欺骗).
Taking taxis is a great way to get around the city of Delhi and chances are, if you arrive in Delhi by plane, as soon as you make it through customs, you’ll be swarmed by Indian taxi drivers. At the Delhi airport, be sure to arrange for a taxi to your hotel at one of the two Delhi Traffic Police Taxi Booths. One is inside the airport, and one is outside. The key is to make sure to go to a booth run by the police rather than by independent taxi drivers.
Rickshaws are one of my favorite ways to get around Indian cities, in part because it’s how the locals often travel. Auto-rickshaws are more common, but bicycle rickshaws are still used in Old Delhi. If you do have a chance to take a bicycle rickshaw, you should do it at least once for a unique experience that should only set you back about 15 rupees. Auto-rickshaw rates around Delhi range between 30 and 80 rupees, depending on distance.
If you really want to travel around Delhi like the locals, take a public bus. Indian buses become very crowded and most do not have air conditioning. They are, however, very cheap. A bus trip won’t set you back any more than 15 rupees, as long as you stay within the city limits. Since Indian buses get so crowded, try to board the bus at the start of the route so you can get a seat.
The train is a great way to get around within the city of Delhi. Fares are reasonable, between six and 22 rupees. All departure announcements are in both Hindi and English, and tokens can be purchased for between six and 22 rupees.
【1】The author is trying to __________ in Delhi through this text.
A.explain the difficulties of traveling B.expect us to travel around
C.show his/her experiences D.give some advice of traveling
【2】To avoid being cheated, you ought to _________ if you want to take a taxi at the Delhi airport.
A.go out of the airport B.go to a police-run booth
C.show your ticket to the driver D.pay more to the drivers to keep safe
【3】The author suggests taking a rickshaw in order to __________.
A.help the local rickshaw drivers B.enjoy the comfortable trip
C.gain some unique experience D.save some money
【4】What can we infer from the passage?
A.You’ll have to speak English if you travel around in India.
B.It will be difficult for you to get a seat if you get on the bus halfway.
C.A rickshaw driver only charges whatever amount you give him.
D.You won’t have to pay much if you travel around by bus in India.

28、Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult or impossible to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.
According to a new study published in Current Biology, a significant reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about potential dangers. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment.
For the study, 35 young volunteers were asked to sleep in a sleep lab for several days. Meanwhile, researchers watched their brain activities.
According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity decreased as days went by, falling even to the point of complete calm. In this process, the participants got an increasingly better sleep experience.
The findings suggest that the different rhythms of the sides of the brain affect our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. Thus, the brain can’t relax and is sensitive to anything strange in the surroundings, just as it is in daytime.
“At some level, the brain is continuing to analyze things, even though you are not aware of the analysis,” US professor Jerome Siegel told Smithsonian Magazine. “If something unusual happens – if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock – you can be alert, even though the intensity of the stimulus is quite low.”
More surprisingly, this phenomenon is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with its corresponding eye staying open.
The researchers think that it is the result of evolution, and works to protect us in potentially dangerous environments.
If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.
【1】What did the new study published in Current Biology find?
A.A comfortable bed could help people sleep well in a new environment.
B.Most people could sleep well in a new environment after the first night.
C.Brain activities affected people’s sleep in a new environment.
D.The right brain determined how well people slept in a new environment.
【2】What was found out about the volunteers?
A.Their left brains were more active on the first night.
B.Their right brains became more active as days went by.
C.Their right brains kept them awake the whole night.
D.They slept better in the sleep lab than at home.
【3】What do the researchers think makes the brain sensitive to new things?
A.The bad sleep experiences people have had.
B.The tiredness that people suffer from in daytime.
C.The imbalance between the two sides of the brain.
D.The strangeness of the things that people come across.
【4】What do the researchers think of “first night effect”?
A.It has evolved as a way to protect us.
B.It’s a characteristic that animals don’t have.
C.It’s completely different from the way animals sleep.
D.It helps people to get used to new environments quickly.
29、 If you read the news about honeybee survival, it’s all very confusing. The Hoover Institution’s Dr. Henry Miller notes “The reality is that honeybee populations are not declining. According to U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) statistics, the world’s honeybee population rose to 80 million colonies (群落) in 2011 from 50 million in1960.” Meanwhile Jennifer Sass of the Natural Resources Defense Council points out “The number of managed honeybee colonies in the U. S. has dropped from four million hives (蜂群) in 1970 to 2.5 million today.”
Surprisingly, both of these claims are correct. Miller points to the “global” commercial honeybee-hive count, which has grown considerably. Sass points to domestic colony numbers only, which have in fact declined.
Far more bees are farmed for making honey than for pollination (传粉) services. Since more honey is now made overseas than it was in the past, more hives are kept overseas, and fewer in the United States and Europe. And the global number of commercial hives and honey they produce has grown to meet the demands of an expanding world population. Such shifts offer no evidence of a honeybee hive crisis. They simply represent the market forces of supply and demand.
The FAO data also clarify that national or even regional declines in the size of the managed honeybee population cannot prove claims of a global pollinator decline or a pollination crisis. However, it emphasizes that solutions to those problems must be motivated locally, rather than globally.
Solutions will follow only if we take a non-subjective look at the issues, so we can address them appropriately rather than have a crisis mentality. As I highlight in a recent post for The Hill,a big part of the solution lies at the very local level: with the beekeepers, farmers, and communities that surround them.
【1】What contributes to the growth of commercial hives?
A.The claims of the FAO.
B.The shift of honey export.
C.The increasing demands of honey.
D.The more services of pollination.
【2】What’s the author’s attitude to the honeybee population issue?
A.Supportive.
B.Objective.
C.Confused.
D.Doubtful.
【3】What would be the best title for the text?
A.Honeybee Crisis Solved or Not?
B.Honeybee Population Declining or Not?
C.Honeybee Market Global or Local?
D.Honeybee Research Global or Local?

40、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成-一个完整的故事。
I walked to Mrs. Windsor's house and waited outside. She was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. 1 stood against the wall and daydreamed what I'd rather be doing. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn't have a gift for it. Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons for free, so I felt my duty to try.
The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. 1 walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music. Today Mrs. Windsor introduced her niece Pasha to teach me.
With a smile, Pasha sat beside me on the piano bench, opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys. Then I frowned(皱眉) and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I had to admit I was a rather mechanical (呆板的) pianist.
After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?" 1 looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn't know what she meant. “Like a story. Here, let me try and you listen," Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?" Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now a princess appears and she's picking flowers from the water's edge." A happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha's dancing fingers.
