  • 26、   During the darkest days of the drought(干早)that hit the western US since the early 2000srivers went dry from north to south. Consequentlylow river flows severely reduced the amount of carbon-free electricity that could be produced by the thousands of hydroelectric power plants(水力发电厂)along rivers across the West.

Nowa group of researchers have figured out that an extra 100 million tons of carbon ended up in the atmosphere because people had to use carbon-emitting(碳排放)power sources instead of hydroelectric power during drought. That’s equal to adding about 1. 4 million cars to road for every one of those years. “That’s a big piece of the pic”says Noth Diffenbaugh a climate scientist at Stanford and one of the authors of the study.

In normal years, over 20% of the electicity comes from hydroelectric power plants. But that number fluctuates with the ebb(退潮)and flow of water. And when water is not enough. the amount of hydroelectric power decreases.

States like Califomia. Washirgton, and Orgon that rely on hydroelectic power during water-rich years were the hardest hit. In Califormia, for example, the extra carbon dioxide emitted because of the drought added up to over 7% of its total carbon emissions.

That’s not a minor problem. Many of the western states have made plans for how to reduce their emissions over the next few decades. Califormia, for example, is trying to get its emissions down to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050. But drought makes it harder to meet the emissions reduction goals.

While the carbon cost of drought is large, Diffenbaugh points out, with this study and a lot of others from the past few years, we’ve learned more and more about when and why carbon-free energy  sources face challenge. Armed with this information, he says, energy managers can figure out how to fill the gaps in energy demand with more renewable resources.

1What phenomenon is described in the first two paragraphs?

    A. The high consumption of energy.

    B. Large number of cars on the road.

    C. The increased demand for power sources.

    D. The large carbon emission due to drought.

2What does the underlined word “fluctuates” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Appears naturally.

    B. Changes irregularly.

    C. Becomes stable.

    D. Increases greatly.

3What can we know about California according to the text?

    A. Its carbon emission is very heavy.

    B. It is a water-rich state all year round.

    C. It heavily depends on renewable energy.

    D. It has achieved its emission reduction goal.

4What does Noah Diffenbaugh think of climate cost?

    A. It is not that serious.

    B. It is expected to be solved.

    C. It is a global common problem.

    D. It has been solved in some areas.

  • 27、The Lion king musical theatre tickets in London

Read our original review of The Lion King

It’s one of the most beloved Disney films of all time, and for last two decades it’s been one of the main events of London’s West End. The magical, family-friendly stage version of The Lion King has been reigning supreme at the Lyceum Theatre since 1999, and shows no signs of quietening its roar.

If you’ve not seen the classic Disney film, that’s close to sacrilege - but don’t worry, we can fill you in. a young cub called Simba tries to come to terms with the cruel death of his father Mufasa, at the same time as learning about the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as a king. It’s a bit like Hamlet, but with singing animals (and a happier ending).

The musical is a must-see for any Londoner, whether you call the capital home or are just here for the weekend. The stunning visuals are pretty breathtaking whatever your age, but ingenious puppetry and intricate masks recreate the animal kingdom of Africa in a spectacle that your little lion clubs will never forget.

Did you know? Julie Taymor, the shows director, created a number of puppets and masks for the show. She used many different styles, but had one rule: the performer should never be hidden by the device so the audience could see the humanity of the characters as well as what each performer was technically capable of.

Where? Lyceum Theatre, 21 Wellington Street, WC2E 7RQ. Nearest underground stations are: Charing Cross, Covent Garden, Embankment, Leicester Square, Holborn and Temple.

Performance dates and times: The Lion King is currently booking until September 30, 2019. Performances are Tuesday-Sunday, with matinees at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, and evening performances at 7.30 p.m. (not Sunday). The running time of the show is two and a half hours with an interval.

  • 28、At the beginning of my 8:00 a. m. class one Monday at my college, I cheerfully asked my students how their weekend had been. One young man said that his weekend had not been very good. He then proceeded to ask me why I always seemed to be so cheerful. His question reminded me of something I’d read somewhere before: “Every morning when you get up, you have a choice about how you want to approach life that day”, I said to the young man. “I choose to be cheerful”. “Let me give you an example”, I continued.

The other 60 students in the class ceased their chatter and began to listen to our conversation.

As soon as I got to my office, I called to ask for a tow truck(拖车). The secretary in the office asked me what had happened. “This is my lucky day”, I replied, smiling. “Your car breaks down and today is your lucky day?” She was puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“I live 17 miles from here”, I replied. “My car could have broken down anywhere along the freeway. It didn’t. Instead, it broke down in the perfect place: off the freeway, within walking distance of here. I’m still able to teach my class, and I’ve been able to arrange for the tow truck to meet me after class. If my car was meant to break down today, it couldn’t have been arranged in a more convenient fashion.” The secretary’s eyes opened wide, and then she smiled. I smiled back and headed for class. So ended my story to the students in my economics class.

I scanned the 60 faces in the lecture hall. Despite the early hour, no one seemed to be asleep. Somehow, my story had touched them. Or maybe it wasn’t the story at all. In fact, it had all started with a student’s observation that I was cheerful. A wise man once said: “Who you are speaks louder to me than anything you can say”. I suppose it must be so.

  • 29、   “A blue whale's heart is as big as a Volkswagen Beetle(大众甲壳虫),” I told a group of wide-eyed, open-mouthed second-graders. “It is so big that you could walk around inside of it.” Then I asked a big question-“Why does a blue whale have such a big heart?”and let the adventure begin.

I was bringing SOLE to my classroom-the Self-Organized Learning Environment.

My students began their investigations and, after 40 minutes, they shared their discoveries.

“Blue whales can call to each other over almost a thousand miles.” said Heavenly. “They need a big heart to talk to each other.”

“They swim all over the world,” said Ki'ara. “So they need a big heart to be their motor.”

“They swim together in pairs.” said Amare. “So they need huge hearts to care for each other.”

“Yeah,” said Isaac. “That's true. It takes a huge heart to care for somebody.”

“Hmmm,” I said. “How can we have big hearts for each other instead of small hearts?”

Then the students made a list of it.

I was teaching compassionto model ways we can care for each other and other living things. This SOLE lesson took a beautiful turn when Amaze connected the heart of the blue whale to community and to caring.

Perri Klass, in a brief essay for the New York Times titled “Understanding How Children Develop Compassion”, writes about the importance of modeling compassion to children so those things are part of their experience long before they know the word.

Around my school, however, nine out of 10 families live in a destructive poverty that makes it difficult to model compassion, to nurture community and caring. My students often come to school knowing more about the survival of the fittest than the survival of the kindest. Yet here were my 7 and 8-year-olds working together in a community, talking about caring for each other and exploring ways we can have big hearts instead of small hearts for each other.

On that day, the blue whale and the second-graders modeled compassion for all of us. This SOLE lesson brought heart to my classroom.

1How did the students get the answer in the SOLE class?

A.By looking at a blue whale. B.By finding the answer themselves.

C.By questioning each other. D.By taking a dangerous a trip.

2What was the list made by the students about?

A.The ways to care for each other. B.The ways to learn from each other.

C.The disadvantages of having small hearts. D.The importance of having big hearts.

3What does the underlined part “the survival of the fittest” imply?

A.The students were used to SOLE lessons. B.The students were mostly from poor families.

C.The students had too much to do at school. D.The students were fond of working together.

4Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.SOLE Lessons-a Way to Care for Each Other

    B.Discoveries about a Blue Whale's Heart

C.How Blue Whales Taught Children about Compassion

D.How Children Learned Science in SOLE Lessons

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

Nowadays, going to a higher education institution is not the only option one has. The Internet-the place where it is possible to find anything--has become a perfect solution for those who want to learn something new, but have no possibility or desire to go to college. Although online education may not seem to be large enough compared to the traditional one, it possesses a number of solid advantages you should consider.

First of all, online education means comfort. Studying in a college or university often equates to moving to a different city, handing over loads of money, living on campus, and having to go out no matter how horrible the weather outside is Studying online, you get yourself rid of all these disadvantages. Regardless of whether you are at home, on vacation, or having a lunch break in the office, all you need to learn something new is your laptop and an Internet connection.

Secondly, online education is much more affordable than the traditional one. For example, on Udemy, you can find all kinds of educational programs whose prices often stay in the range of $180-200. Coursera, along with regular paid courses, also offers a variety of free educational materials available for everyone. Of course, not all of the online degrees offer cheaper prices, but due to the absence of travelling costs and other factors, studying online proves to be more accessible. Studying materials, as well as other resources, are often included in the price for an online course.

Finally, you can study at your own. Educational institutions have to focus on an average student. The disciplines you will study, the methods of education, teachers, and the academic environment are not yours to choose. At the same time, the Internet gives you the opportunity to study as much as you want, with any teacher or instructor you like. Many courses online have teaching videos. You can watch one per day, or you can finish an entire course in a week-you can do whatever is convenient to you.
