  • 26、Gregory Kloehn digs through dustbins every day, but not for the reason that most people would thinkHe isn’t homelessIn fact he is trying to help the homeless.

Gregory began his life as a sculptorBut he often felt that his sculptures, which just stood in rich people’s houses for years, lacked a meaningful purposeSo in 201l he decided to put his artistic energies into creating homes to sell—not ordinary homes but small structures built entirely from recycled materials.

The thought of creating homes for the homeless didn’t occur to him until the year 2013, when a homeless couple asked him for a tarp(防水布)Instead of a tarp, Gregory offered them something better: a small home with a water tank, a kitchen and a trap for wasteThey were so grateful that Gregory decided to focus his efforts on helping house the homeless population in his cityAnd soon his “Homeless Homes Project” was started.

Before starting a new home, Gregory, goes hunting for materials by digging through dustbinsEverything he finds is usable—refrigerator doors become house doors; washing machine doors often serve as windows, and the tops of cars become strong roofsHe put wheels at the bottom for users to move their homes around easilyEach home takes two to three days to make

So far Gregory has donated dozens of homes to the city’s most needyWhile his small low-cost mobile homes are not the final solution to the problem of homelessness, they are really practical and do provide a warm and safe place for the homeless to stay inThey are simply a way for one man to do something nice for those in need of some help.

Gregory has written a book titled Homeless Architecture, where he explains techniques to build those homes and he is now working on weekend workshops“A lot of people who hear about what I’m doing want to get involved,” he said“Maybe we can meet someplace and put a couple of homes together.”

1Why did Gregory turn from making sculptures to creating homes?

    A. He had no home to live in

    B. He had to make more money.

    C. He lost interest in sculpture.

    D. He wanted to help the homeless.

2The author mentions the story in Paragraph 3 to tell us____________.

    A. Gregory’s small homes were popular among the homeless

    B. how Gregory got the idea of “Homeless Homes Project”

    C. the homeless couple asked Gregory to produce more homes

    D. housing the homeless in a city was not an easy task

3What can we conclude from Paragraph 4?

    A. Gregory has great trouble hunting for materials for his small houses

    B. It takes Gregory a long time to produce a home

    C. Gregory’s work requires imagination and creativity

    D. Everything in the dustbins will be used in Gregory’s work

4What can we infer from the last paragraph?

    A. Gregory’s project will help more homeless people.

    B. Gregory doesn’t need to make small homes now

    C. Gregory’s work will completely solve the homelessness problem

    D. A single person can make no difference to social problems

  • 27、   As doctors and nurses struggle for medical supplies to fight the coronavirus pandemic, help is coming from an unlikely place – high school students.

The Career Technical Education Charter (CTEC) High School, US, has been utilizing (利用) its nine 3D printers to make face shields (防护面罩) for healthcare workers on the frontline.

Face masks have been particularly challenging to find across the US since the outbreak. Gavin Newsom, Governor of the State of California, announced recently that the state is set to spend $1 billion (about 7 billion yuan) to purchase 200 million masks each month to boost its supply.

Valerie Castro, 16, a CTEC sophomore, is part of a team of teachers and students who came up with design tweaks (改进) that cut almost 30 minutes off the time it takes to build a face shield.

“That’s what makes this school kind of different,” she said. “Even though all these bad things are happening, we’re able to make an impact positively. It’s like leaving your little mark on the world.”

Makerbot, a New York-based company that makes 3D printers, has also helped CTEC to maximize the building process.

They’ve been churning out (大量生产) nearly 100 shields each day, and that production rate is set to triple as 20 more 3D printers come online at the school.

CTEC staff and students have provided masks to hospitals, dentists, urgent care centers and retirement homes in Fresno County and the surrounding areas in California.

“I was shocked,” Stacy Vohra told school staff in a video. “We were so thrilled to have the donation from CTEC. This is something that we’ve been needing.”

The entire staff has switched from daily teaching to face shield production, said Jonathan Delano, director of CTEC.

When the new 3D printers arrive, some of them will go to students’ houses so kids can help with the hands-on process, Delano said.

“That’s how we get through these things,” Delano said. “Our high school focuses on giving back to the community. Students should know the skills they hold can have an impact on a community.”

1What sets The Career Technical Education Charter High School apart, according to Castro?

A.They joined healthcare workers on the frontline.

B.They donated about 200 million masks in a month.

C.They designed a more protective face shield.

D.They made a difference in such difficult times.

2According to Paragraph 7, what will happen when they triple their production rate?

A.They will get 20 more 3D printers from Makerbot.

B.They will produce a face shield in less than 30 minutes.

C.They will be able to produce about 300 face shields every day.

D.They will start to sell their face shields on their school’s website.

3What does Delano think of CTEC’s face shield production?

A.It has boosted the supply of masks in Los Angeles.

B.It has interrupted the school’s daily teaching.

C.It reminds the students of the value of their skills.

D.It challenges students to handle 3D printers by themselves.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.Teenagers helping design and produce face masks.

B.3D printing technology being used to produce face masks.

C.Donations from high schools to fight the pandemic.

D.A high school making contributions by producing face shields.

  • 28、   Overflowing rivers can cause enormous damage. 1 And it continues to rise. So far it has not been evident how climate change influences the magnitude (规模) of river floods.

Austrian flood expert Prof. Günter Blöschl from TU Wien (Vienna) has led a large international study involving a total of 35 research groups. The study provides clear evidence that it is climate change that causes the change of magnitude of flood events observed in recent decades. 2 In northwestern Europe, floods are becoming increasingly severe; in southern and eastern Europe, flood magnitudes mostly tend to decrease, although in small catchments (集水区) they may actually increase.

“We already knew that climate change is shifting the timing of floods within a year,” says Günter Blöschl. “But the key question is: Does climate change also control the magnitude of flood events? The previous available data had not been adequate to figure out whether this is the case or not. We have now examined this question in great detail and can say with confidence: 3

For the study, data from 3,738 flood measurement stations in Europe from 1960 to 2010 were analyzed. For a longtime it has been assumed that climate change is having an impact on the magnitude of flood waters because a warmer atmosphere can store more water. 4 In central and north-western Europe, between Iceland and Austria, flood magnitudes are increasing because rainfall is increasing and the soils are becoming wetter. In southern Europe, on the other hand, flood levels are decreasing, as climate change results in declining rainfall and the higher temperatures cause increased evaporation of water in the soil. In the more continental climate of Eastern Europe, the magnitudes of floods tend to decrease due to shallower snow packs in winter associated with higher temperatures.

5 “But the regional patterns all match well with predicted climate change impacts,” says Blöschl, “This shows us that we are already in the midst of climate change.”

    A.Processes differ across Europe.

B.Yes, climate change is a vital factor.

C.The magnitude of the changes is remarkable.

D.Flood management must adapt to these new realities.

E.However, climate change does not have the same effect on floods everywhere.

F.The latest findings show that this is not the only effect, things are more complicated.

G.Worldwide, the annual damage caused by river floods is estimated at over 100 billion dollars.

  • 29、   No video games are allowed after 10 pm. It is not allowed to play games for more than 90 minutes on non-holidays. No more than 400 yuan per month is allowed to buy virtual weapons and costumes.

The Chinese government has issued new regulations aimed at controlling teenager’s addiction to video games. Some officials believe that this problem is the reason why more and more young people are suffering from myopia (近视) and poor learning. The rules forbid users under the age of 18 from playing between 10 pm and 8 am. The rules demand that they shouldn’t play more than 90 minutes on non-holidays and more than 3 hours on weekends and other holidays.

Officials have taken stronger measures to monitor large technology companies and promote them to help spread the advocated cultural values. The official media regarded some games as “poisons” and banned some violent games. In addition, minors (未成年人) must use real names and ID numbers when they log into the game. These regulations also limit the a-mount of money that teenagers can use to purchase virtual items such as weapons, clothing, and pets through the app.

Analysts said that these regulations have been largely predicted by the industry and are unlikely to affect its earnings. However, young gamers may also find ways to bypass (绕开) the rules, such as using the parent’s phone number and ID number. “There will always be something imperfect,” said Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at Niko Partners. However, he added that thanks to the regulations, China is now one of the most regulated video game markets in the world.

Yang Bingben is the owner of an industrial technology company. He noticed that his son often plays games that don’t require networking and is difficult to control. “We have something new to replace the games,” he said, “our thinking should be to build more stadiums, such as football stadiums and basketball courts.”

1The new regulations will help Chinese teenagers with their ________.

    A.intelligence B.personalities

C.study and eyesight D.constitutions and morals

2What did Daniel Ahmad think of the regulations?

A.They are adjustable. B.They are effective.

C.They are creative. D.They are worthless.

3What can be inferred from Yang Bingben’s words?

A.Teenagers are spending more time in the stadiums.

B.Football and basketball will be popular with teenagers.

C.Getting rid of the addiction to video games is impossible.

D.Doing sports helps prevent teenagers playing video games.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

You never know the difference you might make if you take the time to encourage someone. I gave up the idea of being a writer the summer before I started college. I’d been writing since I was five years old. My little friends wanted toys at that time, but I just wanted paper. Childhood passed and a box of short stories gave way to my middle school days. I wrote for a magazine and by the time I was in my eighth grade, half of the annual publications were written by me. Sometimes I'd dream about being a novelist, writing books that everyone might read. My dad was always sure that it would happen. When he read my poems or stories, his eyes welled up. "That's beautiful, honey,” he always told me. "One day, the entire world will know what a gift you have.” Those words encouraged me through high school to keep believing that writing was my calling.

But somewhere along the months of my senior year, I became disappointed. The crazy injustice in this world — bad guys getting buck out on the street and doing harm again and again, changed my mind.”I m going to be a lawyer in the future,” I told my parents. My dad’s face fell, but he kept his smile. "Whatever you do, you'll be brialliant at it," he said to me.

One of my first classes at college was Journalism 100. One day, the professor, Bob Scheibel, assigned us a story about an apartment fire. He gave us the facts and we had a few days to write a news story.

I was sure that I had gotten the facts right when I wrote the story. I didn’t expect much feedback. But a few days later, Bob Scheibel asked me to talk to him after class. Questions raced through my mind. What had I done wrong? Had I gotten the facts mixed up? Did I miss anything critical in the details? Five minutes after the class, I found myself in front of the professor. His eyes met mine with great seriousness.
