It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled. The old bucket felt very ashamed(惭愧的)because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbedsmuch water had leaked(渗漏)along the path.

Sometimes the new bucket would say"See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me water the flowers every day! I don’t know why he still uses you. What a waste of space you are!"

And all that the old bucket could say was"I know I am not very usefulbut I can only do my best. I am happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me at least.’’

One daythe gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usualhe said"You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you backand I want you to look carefully along the path."

Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticedon the side where the new bucket was carriedthere was just bare earthon the other side where the old bucket was carriedthere was a joyous row of wild flowersleading all the way to the garden.

  • 27、   A year ago, Jiao Wenchao, 31 and a college teacher suddenly realized that he was having hearing problems. A hospital examination suggested that both his ears were losing the ability to hear high frequency sounds. The doctor told him that the problem was caused by over exposure(暴露)to high frequency and loud noise, including from his earphones.

A recent report by the World Health Organization has warned that some 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices, including smart phones.

Data from studies in middle-and high-income countries analyzed by WHO indicate that among teenagers and young adults aged between 12 and 35, nearly 50 percent were exposed to unsafe levels of sound from personal audio devices and around 40 percent were exposed to potentially(潜在地) damaging levels of sound at entertainment sites.

According to the study, safe listening depends on the intensity(密度) or loudness of sound, as well as the duration(持续)and frequency of listening. When the exposure is particularly loud, regular or prolonged, it could lead to permanent damage of the ear's sensory cells, it says.

The study results have caught wide attention on the Internet in China. Many internet users admit that compared with more noticeable health problems like eyesight loss, hearing loss has been largely neglected(忽略) as it is usually in the high frequency section, which means that those who suffer it can still carry out daily communication unaffected.

Pan Tao, an otologist from Peking University Third Hospital in Beijing says that timely treatment is critical. "This is because sometimes the hearing loss is temporary and can be cured with therapy, including medicine. However, it can become irreversible(不可逆转的) if the problem is not properly treated within the first two or three months.

"But many people miss the best time to get treated because they do not even realize the existence of the problem."

It says teenagers and young people can better protect their hearing by keeping the volume down on personal audio devices, wearing earplugs when visiting noisy sites, and using carefully fitted, and, if possible, noise-canceling earphones or headphones.

    1What causes hearing loss?

    A.Freguent exposure to loud noise.

B.Listening to music on the phones.

C.Going to noisy places once in a while.

D.Not having your hearing examined regularly.

2What can we conclude from the studies by WHO?

A.Half of the population in rich countries will go deaf.

B.People should not use personal audio devices.

C.Loud noise will cause physical damage to ears.

D.Hearing loss is a potentially serious problem.

3Why don’t people pay attention to hearing loss?

A.It won’t affect communication. B.It can be cured easily.

C.It often escapes notice. D.It is only temporary.

4What is suggested to avoid hearing loss?

    A.Have your hearing examined regularly.

B.Keep yourself to a safe sound volume.

C.Stay away from personal audio devices.

    D.Don’t go to noisy places.

  • 28、   Age plays a major part in people who are infected with cold, i. e, in people who suffer from cold infection. A study done by University of Michigan has shown information that seems to be true for the general population. Babies are the most cold infected group, generally more than six colds in their first year. Boys have more colds than girls up to the age of three. After three, girls are easier to get infected with cold than boys, and teenage girls get three colds a year to boys' two. The general cold infections continue to get less into adults. Elderly people who are in good health have as few as one or two colds every year. One interesting thing is found among people in their twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infection , because people in this age group are most likely to have young children.

The study has also found that economy plays an important role as well. With more and more income, the frequency at which colds are reported in the family is getting lower and lower. Families with the lowest income usually live in rooms more crowded than rooms owned by richer people, and the crowding usually leads to more chances for the cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also have an effect on our diet. Many scientists believe that a poorer diet usually leads into more possibilities of cold infection.

1Which of the age groups has the highest frequency of cold infection?

    A.Teenage boys. B.Small babies. C.Adult women. D.Elderly people.

    2What's the passage mainly about?

A.A study on cold infection. B.Tips to avoid cold infection.

C.Major reasons leading to cold infection. D.The possible dangers of cold infection.

3How does economy play an important role in cold infection?

A.Families with lower income suffer less from cold infection.

B.People who have lower income enjoy living in crowded rooms.

C.Rich families can have better nutrition and never get infected.

D.People with higher income have fewer chances of infection.

4What does the author suggest for fighting against cold infection?

A.Make more money. B.Live in a bigger room.

    C.Have a better diet. D.Stay in a shared place.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Hundreds of years ago, Charles Darwin predicted that facial expressions of emotion are 1. If you’ve ever seen an episode of the popular US TV drama Lie To Me, you will really understand facial expressions. The leading actor of the show, Dr. Cal Lightman has spent 20 years studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions, which allows him to point out other people’s studying nonverbal communication and facial expressions which allows him to point out other people’s 2 and on many occasions, to be skilled at tricking in order to get the truth.

Is there really much truth behind this science of 3 human emotions through expressions? Paul Ekman, a(n) 4 psychologist whose work focuses on mapping facial expressions, is Lie To Me’s scientific advisor and the following are some of his explanations.

    Hand-to-face gesture indicates a lie.

Each micro-expression is unique to 5 specific emotions because the person is often unaware of doing it. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are lying when someone uses a hand to hide part of his face. The person could be holding back information but you may better consider looking at other more important clues rather than just the simple hand-to-face gesture.

    A liar refuses eye contact.

People look away when they are thinking carefully and considering each word before it is spoken, not just when they are 6 an excuse. Oblique eyebrows are a very reliable 7of sadness and few people can make this 8 expression, so it is actually never faked.

    Guilty knowledge technique is 9.

Lightman often uses the guilty knowledge technique, mentioning something that only the guilty person will know about and show a(n)10. This is often used in polygraph exams: “Was the person strangled, shot or stabbed to death?” Only the killer knows and is likely to respond physiologically when the actual weapon is mentioned.
