  • 22、From sausage rolls to sweets and a coffee with a bin, there were many things that made Greg Robinson smile.

When the father-of-two, who was in his 50s, died suddenly in April 2021, his family’s life was turned upside down.

Greg ran a gift shop in his hometown of Donaghadce. Whether it was at work, walking the dog, with his local flute band or just out in his belayed town, his family said Greg made time for those in need. Now, on the week of his first anniversary, his family shared some of the things that made him smile with their community.

“We wanted to plan something together that allowed us to put our energy into something positive and give us something practical to do, which we knew would have an impact on others,” they told the reporter.

“We knew that by making others smile, we in turn would feel the benefit of that too. We have realised the importance of little things that have made us smile throughout the past year.”

As Greg loved his town and the community, all the gifts were purchased locally. Among them are vouchers (代金券) for a bakery, for some of his favourite sausage rolls, an ice-cream shop where he used to buy a quarter of sweets, and a cafe because “a wee coffee and a bun would have made dad’s face light up with excitement”.

“When someone dies, it is often the case that people are scared to mention the loved one in case it makes you sad, but the journey has taught us that this isn’t the case. The wonderful memories of dad shared by our community bring so much comfort,” his family said.

“We love those times when we hear how dad had impacted their lives, from showing kindness as a teenager at high school, to chatting away to customers in his shop,” they added.

For Greg’s children, they will be forever grateful for their dad teaching them “to focus on the positive parts of the day, looking for ways that we can express gratitude for everyday things”.

【1】What do we know about Greg from the first three paragraphs?

A.Greg was often ready to help others.

B.Greg had a great passion for cooking.

C.Greg earned his living by playing in a band.

D.Greg’s death had little impact on his family.

【2】How did the community react after receiving the gifts?

A.They gathered and comforted Greg’s family.

B.They expressed sadness about Greg’s death.

C.They were still afraid to talk about Greg.

D.They shared good memories of Greg.

【3】What would be the best title for this passage?

A.An Act of Kindness in Memory of Greg

B.Unusual Ways to Thank Greg’s Community

C.A Huge Celebration of Greg’s Family Reunion

D.Special Gifts to Record the Family Life of Greg

  • 23、   NO ONE EVER said science education was easy. Certainly the concepts we teach, like conservation of momentum or quantum mechanics, can be hard to grasp. But what really complicates the attempt is that we' re also trying to teach a deeper lesson at the same time — to help students understand the nature of science itself.

All too often, young people get the impression that science is about learning certain “laws" and then applying them to different situations. After all, that's what we make them do on tests, to show that they've been doing the work. But that’s not it at all. Science is the process of building these concepts through the collection of experimental evidence.

And while I'm on it, let's call these concepts what they really are—not laws, but models. Science is all about building and testing models. It's difficult to help students understand that aspect of science when we just give them the models to begin with. Sure, in physics we often include historical or mathematical evidence to support big ideas , but that often isn't enough.

Of course, we can't start from nothing. If students had to build their own models from the ground up, it would be like trying to learn programming by inventing computers. As Isaac Newton is supposed to have said, we stand on the shoulders of giants. We must take models built by others and go from there.

What I'd like to suggest is that this actually provides a great way into the adventure of science and an opportunity to meet our objectives as educators. If you can create a situation that challenges students' assumptions and produces conceptual conflict, that's a great opportunity for learning.

【1】What is the misunderstanding of teaching science?

    A.It's complicated.

B.It focuses on the nature of science.

    C.It's very difficult.

D.It lies in leaching and testing “laws”.

【2】Which way to teach science is highly recommended by the author?

A.Encouraging students to always start from nothing.

B.Providing students with some models to follow suit.

C.Guiding students to begin with models built by others.

D.0ffering students proof io support important concepts.

【3】The author cites Isaac Newton's words to           .

    A.justify the experiment

    B.praise the statement

    C.show the achievement

    D.support the argument

【4】What is the best title of die passage?

A.The Best Way to Teach Science

B.The Best Way of Concept Building

C.The Best Way to Learn Science

D.The Best Way to Handle Concept Conflict

  • 24、In some ways, learning to programme a computer is similar to learning a new language. It requires learning new symbols and terms, which must be organized correctly to instruct the computer what to do. The computer code must also be clear enough that other programmers can read and understand it.

In spite of those similarities, MIT neuroscientists (神经科学家) have found that reading computer code doesn’t activate the regions of the brain that are involved in language processing. Instead, it activates a distributed network called the multiple demand network, which is also related to complex tasks such as solving maths problems or crossword puzzles.

Although reading computer code activates the multiple demand network, it appears to rely more on different parts of the network than maths or logic problems do. “Understanding computer code seems to be its own thing. It isn’t the same as language, and it isn’t the same as maths and logic,” says Anna Ivanova, an MIT graduate student and the lead author of the study.

Evelina Fedorenko is the senior author of the paper, which appears today in eLife. A major focus of her research is the relationship between language and other cognitive (认知) functions. In particular, she has been studying the question of whether other functions rely on the brain’s language network, which includes Broca’s area and other regions in the left hemisphere (半球) of the brain. In previous work, her lab has shown that music and maths don’t appear to activate this language network.

There are two schools of thought regarding how the brain learns to code, she says. One holds that in order to be good at programming, you must be good at maths. The other suggests that because of the parallels between coding and language, language skills might be more relevant. To clarify this issue, the researchers set out to study whether brain activity patterns while reading computer code would overlap (重叠) with language-related brain activity.

    【1】What’s paragraph 1 mainly about?

A.The computer must be instructed what to do.

B.Programming requires new symbols and terms.

C.The computer code must be clear and understandable.

D.There are similarities between programming and language learning.

【2】What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 3 mean?

A.Reading computer code is different from other cognitive tasks.

B.Learning languages is different from learning maths or logic.

C.Language, maths and logic are relatively easier to learn.

D.Reading computer code is more challenging.

【3】What might the researchers do next?

A.Set up two schools to study how the brain learns to code.

B.Research deeper into the parallels between coding and language.

C.Figure out the relationship between programming and learning maths.

D.Compare activity patterns of reading code with those of learning language.

【4】What field can the research findings be applied to?

    A.Health.

    B.Commerce.

    C.Education.

    D.Medicine

  • 25、There are many things parents can do to help children with autism(自闭症)overcome their challenges. Learning all you can about autism and getting ________ in treatment will go a long way toward helping your child. Additional, the following tips will make daily home life easier for both you and your autistic child:

Be consistent(一致的). Children with autism have a hard time ________ what they’ve learned if there is a change of setting. For example, your child may use sign language at school to communicate, but never think to do so at home. Creating ________ in your child’s environment is the best way to reinforce learning. Find out what your child’s therapists are doing and continue their techniques at home. Explore the ________ of having therapy take place in more than one place in order to encourage your child to ________ what he or she has learned from one environment to another. It’s also important to be consistent in the way you ________ with your child and deal with challenging behaviors.

________ a schedule. Children with autism tend to do best when they have a highly-structured schedule or routine. Again, this goes back to the consistency they both need and crave. Set up a schedule for your child, with ________ times for meals, therapy, school, and bedtime. Try to keep disturbance to this routine to a ________. If there is an unavoidable schedule change, prepare your child for it ________.

________ good behavior. Positive reinforcement can go a long way with children with autism, so make an effort to “catch them doing something good.” Praise them when they act appropriately or learn a new skill, being very ________ about what behavior they’re being praised for.

Pay attention to your child’s sensory sensitivities. Many children with autism are hypersensitive to light, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Other children with autism are “under-sensitive” to sensory stimuli. ________ what sights, sounds, smell and movements cause your kid’s “bad” or disruptive behaviors and what brings about a(n) ________ response. If you understand what affects your child, you’ll be better at solving problems, preventing situations that cause difficulties, and creating ________ experiences.
