  • 22、   Laura Sides was a psychology major at the University of Nottingham in 2004. She first noticed signs of her dad’s developing dementia(痴呆) when she moved to Nottingham. She said, "Dad was a doctor, so he knew exactly what had happened to him, but people try to hide it when they are ill. Then, I came home for my 21st birthday and arranged to meet him, but he never showed up as he’d forgotten. That’s when I knew something serious had happened."

So, aged 21, she decided to leave university and look after him herself. She lived close by, popping in every day to make sure he was eating, and that the house was tidy, before heading off to her work.

Besides challenging moments, there was a time when looking after her dad was a pure joy. "We’d wake up, I’d ask what he wanted to do that day, and however ridiculous the adventure is, off we’d go."

Sadly, in 2009, 5 years later, Laura lost her father. Before he died, Laura went to a hospital appointment with him, where doctors mentioned that his form of Alzheimer’s disease was genetic meaning there was a fifty-fifty chance that she had inherited it. For several years Laura agonised over whether to be tested, finally finding out in August 2017 that she has the APP gene, meaning that, like him, she will develop the condition within a decade.

At first, she struggled, feeling as if her life lacked purpose. Then, during a sleepless night in the summer of 2018, she decided at around 2 a.m. to enter the 2019 London Marathon sponsored by the charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

She hoped to start the conversation around early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and to encourage people to talk about it more openly. "I remember when Dad was ill, people wouldn’t know how to react, but I want to be honest and open," she added. "The more information we can get, the less of a taboo(忌讳) we will feel. That said, the support I’ve received so far after going public has been amazing — that’s what is carrying me through."

    1Laura noticed her father’s dementia when .

A.her father told her his condition in person

B.people nearby informed her of his father’s condition

C.her father forgot his own birthday party

    C.shocked D.delighted

3Laura started the open talk in the hope of .

A.getting people to talk about Alzheimer’s disease openly

B.earning some money to help treat her Alzheimer’s disease

C.making herself stronger to fight against Alzheimer’s disease

D.raising funds for charities Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s disease Research UK

4Which words can best describe Laura?

A.Caring and positive. B.Careful and honest.

C.Patient and cautious. D.Devoted and modest.

  • 23、“Boreout (闷爆) is different from burnout (精疲力竭) in the sense that bored-out employees rarely break down with exhaustion. Bored-out people may be present physically but not in spirit, and people can keep doing this for a good while,” says Harju, who has studied boreout for years.

Workers who realize they’re experiencing boreout may also be unwilling to flag it up as an issue to line managers or human resources. “While the behaviors that feed into burnout — overwork, drive — are appreciated and rewarded by employers, boreout reflects a lack of interest, a lack of motivation,” says Harju. “These are things that are avoided in organizations.”

There are some quick fixes, like taking on work tasks that are more interesting to you. But a 2016 study Harju and her colleagues worked on showed that people who had boreout were less likely to engage in constructive activities like trying to find new, interesting challenges at work.

What happens more often, she says, is that people will just show up at their desks and spend time shopping online, chatting with colleagues or planning other activities. She says that these people aren’t lazy, but are using these behaviours as “coping mechanisms”.

Fahri Ozsungur, an associate professor of economics at Mersin University, Turkey, who was behind the 2021 study on the health effects of boreout, points out that combating the phenomenon isn’t just down to the individual. “Giving meaning to the job is not just up to the employees,” he says. “Instead, it’s up to management to create an office culture that makes people feel valuable.”

If you think boreout is seriously affecting your health either physically or mentally, it may be valuable to ask yourself how you might be able to reselect your career path toward something healthier for you. Seek the advice from advisers, career consultants, friends and family.

“If only people take its suggestion, boreout can make a change into something else: a different career entirely, or a different role in the organization,” Harju says.

【1】What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

A.To introduce the topic of the text.

    B.To describe people with burnout.

    C.To explain what burnout is.

D.To tell us who Harju is.

【2】Why do people prefer not to talk about their boreout?

    A.They lack relevant knowledge.

B.They are warned not to talk about it.

C.They may not want it to be known to employers.

D.They fear to be laughed at by their colleagues.

【3】What does the underlined word “combating” in paragraph 5 mean?

    A.Encouraging.

    B.Blaming.

    C.Trusting.

    D.Fighting.

【4】Which of the following may Harju agree with?

    A.Forcing employers to increase salaries.

B.Sticking to the job until you adapt to it.

C.Trying spending more time with your family.

D.Considering changing a new job interesting you.

  • 24、With the pandemic, we have entered another year. For a long time without the opportunity to release the mood, people unavoidably feel irritable and depressed. How to solve these negative emotions and psychological pressure? 【1】.

Get outside during daylight hours. It may be cold out, but getting outside is still important for your mental health. Having fewer hours of daylight can have a negative impact on your mood. You can simply sit and watch the sunrise or walk around your neighborhood. 【2】, just make an effort to make it a daily habit.

Connect with others if you’re feeling lonely. The pandemic has completely upended the way we socialize, and millions of people are living with feelings of isolation. 【3】, but try to challenge yourself to send three emails a week to someone you haven’t heard from in a while, or call a different loved one each week to check in and see how they are doing. Not only will you brighten your own day, but you'll brighten someone else’s.

【4】. Too often we are stressed by the little things, daily trouble, making storms in teacups. We need to take a deep breath and ask ourselves if whatever is troubling us really matters in the big picture. If not, let it go.

Try a stress release. 【5】. As such, a helpful tool is to let them out and release them. The key here is to put pen to paper and start writing. You may want to write down things that are stressing you out and why they are stressing you out. Doing so allows us to begin to separate our stress from being a part of us, and thereby putting some distance between us and our stress.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a break time at the village school. The bell had rung, and the children had run out into the bright sunshine, wild with laughter and fun. They chased after each other and played heartily, with giggles lingering in the relaxing atmosphere.

All but poor Davy. He came out last and very slowly, but he did not laugh. He was in trouble, and the bright, golden sunlight did not make him glad.

He walked across the yard, and sat down on a stone behind the old maple. A little bird on the highest branch sang just to make him laugh.

But Davy did not notice it. He was thinking of the cruel words that had been said about his ragged clothes. The tears stole out of his eyes, and ran down his cheeks. He closed his eyes to hold back his tears and bit his lips tight.

Poor Davy had no father, and his mother had to work hard to keep him at school. The bell finally rang, indicating it’s time to come home.

At four o’clock that afternoon, he went home by the path that led across the fields and through the woods. He still felt sad. Davy did not wish to trouble his mother; so he wandered a while among the trees, and at last threw himself on the green moss (苔藓) under them.

Just then his teacher came along. She saw who it was, and stopped, saying kindly, “What is the matter, Davy?”

He drooped his head and did not utter a word, but the tears began again to well up.

“Won’t you tell me? Perhaps I can help you.”

Deeply encouraged by her warmth and sincerity, he poured out all his trouble he came across. When he ended, she was lost in deep thought and for a while she came up, gave Davy a consoling pat and said, cheerily, “I have a plan, Davy, that I think will help you.”

“Oh, what is it?” he said, sitting up with a look of hope, while a tear fell upon a blue violet (紫罗兰).

“Well, how would you like to be a little flower merchant?”
