二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A mind-reading chip that lets you control a computer by just thinking has been made public at a conference in China. Named Brain Talker, the chip could be used to control computers, smart phones and other devices, its creators say. It has been jointly developed by Tianjin University and China Electronics Corporation.

This kind of brain-computer interface (接口) is designed to let a person control a computer, a smartphone or other electronic devices using his/her brainwaves alone-without needing any forms of verbal orders, movements, or button pressing. Brain interfaces would not only allow for the faster operation of various technologies, but also be used to assist people with disabilities, for example by letting an individual drive an electric wheelchair just by thinking.

“Brain-computer interfaces hold a promising future,” said Dong Ming. "The Brain Talker chip advances brain-computer interface technology, allowing it to become more portable, wearable and accessible to the general public.

The brain decoding (解码) chip works by picking out minor neural (神经) electrical signals in the brain and rapidly translating them into a form that the computer can understand. “This brain-computer chip has the ability to identify minor neural electrical signals and decode their information efficiently, which can greatly enhance the speed and accuracy of brain-computer interfaces” said Dr. Dong.

Recent technology advances have allowed researchers to develop the Brain Talker chip, so it is smaller and operates faster, more precisely and with greater efficiency than existing brain-computer interfaces. Although it is not clear exactly how the device will be worn, most brain-computer interface devices are worn on the outside of the body, rather than being fixed directly into the users’ brain. Cheng Longlong, a data scientist, said that the research team will attempt to improve the performance of the Brain Talker. One day brain-computer codec chips will contribute to medical treatment, education, self-discipline, security as well as games and entertainment.

1Why do the creators develop the Brain Talker?

A.To improve the quality of a smartphone

B.To create more efficient electronic devices

C.To make the computer portable and accessible

D.To assist people to faster drive electronic devices

2What does Dr Dong expect of the Brain Talker?

A.It has an uncertain future B.It can record people's brainwaves

C.It can be widely used by the public D.It will advance public entertainment

3What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

    A.How the chip controls computer.

B.How the brain works with a computer.

    C.How the brain processes information

D.How the chip picks out neural electrical signals.

4What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The chip will be worn inside the users’ body

B.It's too challenging to improve the Brain Talk

C.The performance of the Brain Talker is satisfying

D.Some patients will benefit from the Brain Talker

  • 22、Many people find when they are overly familiar with their routines, their excitement will be replaced with boredom quickly. A study shows that finding unusual ways to interact with familiar people, places and things can make everyday experiences feel exciting.【1】. Need some fresh ideas for keeping life fresh? Read on.

    While you are working

Spending too much time in the same environment can keep us from achieving “flow”— being immersed in an activity with full energy and enjoyment.【2】. Move your home office to the library or a coffee shop a few days a week. If you are charged with leading a Monday meeting, try starting it with meditation or a non-work discussion.

    【3】

“Boredom is an emotional state and happens when couples stop taking the opportunity to grow and deeply connect with each other,” says Venus Nicolino, host of Reality Stars. Look for new challenges to take on together. Try mixing up different sets of friends to do something creative, such as a group cooking lesson, or an old-fashioned tea party.

With other people we care about

Instead of “How was your day”, try asking “What are you looking forward to today?” Our curiosity can remind people that we’re interested in who they are, and that’s the key to maintaining intimacy (亲密关系).【4】.

    During your commute

If you walk or use public transportation, greet a stranger or put away your phone and do some people watching. “Simply observing one’s surroundings may seem boring.【5】,” says Tim Lomas, a lecturer at the University of East London. Just remember, whatever you do to relieve boredom today, try something different tomorrow.

    A.With your significant other

B.With people you are familiar with

C.Changes don’t have to be big to make an impact

D.Interacting with other people often brings you much fun

E.In other words, sometimes you’ve just got to shake things up

F.Sometimes being curious about others can make us more pleasant to be around too

G.However, if done mindfully, it can become interesting and even more meaningful

  • 23、Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) may soon be able to turn their used forks and knives into tools and satellite parts.

Tethers Unlimited Inc., an aerospace technology company, has developed a system that combines a waste recycling machine with a 3D printer.

Astronauts will put waste items made of plastic into the recycling machine, called the Poistrusion Recycler. When they press a button, the Recycler will melt down the plastic and turn it into 3D filament (长丝).

The filament will e used in a 3D printer on the ISS-called the Refabricator-to make tools, spare parts and satellite components.

The waste will come from packaging materials, food containers, trays and eating utensils (器具) used on the ISS. Astronaut currently use disposable wet wipes to clean their food containers and utensils. The used wipes are stored as trash (垃圾), and replacement wipes must be sent up to the ISS on cargo missions.

By recycling old food containers and utensils, astronauts will reduce the amount of trash they produce. To get rid of trash from the ISS, astronaut load it into empty cargo capsules (航天舱) and release it into space. The capsules burn up when they enter Earth’s atmosphere.

Turning trash into useful new items will also help NASA save money because astronauts will need fewer supplies. It costs about $ 6,000 for every kilogram launched into orbit. These benefits will be even more important for longer missions in the future-such as the two-year journey to Mars. Astronauts will be able to recycle old waste materials into new tools and parts as they need them.

Tethers have successfully tested the systems in its laboratory. They will test it on the ISS in late 2018. The company is also developing a version of the system for use here on Earth.

1What material are the forks and knives for astronauts made of?

    A. Gold.   B. Iron

    C. Plastic.   D. Wood.

2At present, the astronauts mainly get supplies by   .

    A. 3D printers   B. reusing the old ones

    C. collecting from the space   D. the capsules launched from the earth

3What can the new technology help the astronauts do?

    A. Reuse the trash.

    B. Send the trash to Mars.

    C. Take the trash to the earth.

    D. Load the trash into empty capsules and throw it away.

4What is the biggest benefit of the new technology mentioned in the text?

    A. It can save some space for the ISS.

    B. It can gave more time for the astronauts.

    C. It can provide more conditions to explore space.

    D. It can help to reduce the journey from Earth to Mars.

  • 24、In a world first, scientists have cloned a rare, endangered Przewalski's horse named Kurt at San Diego zoo in the US. Little Kurt looks like any other baby horse as he plays happily in his pen(围栏).

He isn't afraid to kick or head butt anyone who gets in his way and when he's hungry, dashes over to his mother for milk.

Scientists have cloned nearly two dozen kinds of mammals. The first was Dolly the sheep in the UK in 1996. Other species include dogs, cats, pigs, cows and polo ponies and, in China in 2018, a monkey.

The zoo sees Kurt's birth as a milestone in efforts to restore the population of the horse also known as the Asiatic Wild Horse or Mongolian Wild Horse. The small animals ( they stand only about 1.2m to 1.5m tall) are believed extinct in the wild and number only about 2,000 in zoos and wildlife habitats. Their limited gene pool puts them at a reproductive disadvantage.

“This horse is expected to be one of the most genetically important individuals of his species,” Bob Wiese, chief life sciences officer at San Diego Zoo Global, which operates the zoo, said in a statement. “We are hopeful that he will bring back genetic variation important for the future of the Przewalski's horse population. ”

Although only 2 months old Kurt's birth was made possible in 1980 when cells were taken from a 5-year-old male horse and put in deep freeze at San Diego's Frozen Zoo facility. His father died in 1998.

Kurt was named for Kurt Benirschke, who played a key role in founding the Frozen Zoo.

“A central belief of the Frozen Zoo, when it was established by Dr Benirschke, was that it would be used for purposes not possible at the time. ” said Oliver Ryder, director of genetics at San Diego Zoo Global.

Kurt was born at a veterinary(兽医的) facility in Texas,US,where he'll continue to live with his mother for most likely another year. Eventually he'll become part of the zoo's Przewalski's horse population, where it's hoped someday he'll become a father himself.

【1】According to the passage, many mammals have been cloned except______.

    A.Przewalski's horses

    B.polar bears

    C.monkeys

    D.sheep

【2】Why does the zoo see Kurt's birth as a milestone?

A.Because it will be the first one to live in the wild.

B.Because it is the only cloned one close to extinction.

C.Because it's expected to become the lead horse.

D.Because it may help recover the genetic variation.

【3】What can we learn about Kurt from the text?

A.He behaved differently from others when he was young.

B.He doesn't have a father as a cloned one in the laboratory.

C.The cells for cloning have been preserved for over 40 years.

D.Its name comes from the discoverer of the Przewalski's horse.

【4】What was the Frozen Zoo set up for?

A.Protecting endangered animals that may be hard to save for the moment.

B.Providing necessary facilities to help people clone endangered animals.

C.Encouraging people to insist on their purposes that may hard to achieve.

D.Forming a central belief that it would be useful someday in the near future.
