二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   When we’ve got children, it’s typical of us to give careful thought to how much TV the children are watching and that they’re exposed to. Are we being overprotective about the effect reality TV is having on our child? The answer is “No”. Or rather, there’s increasing evidence that these programmes can have a profound influence on young people.

A recent research indicates that some reality TV shows can be every bit as damaging for teenage girls as too many cartoons are for kids — perhaps even worse. The truth is that reality TV is anything but reality — but that’s not necessarily what our children believe. A study for the Girl Scout Research Institute in the US found that eight out of ten girls aged between 11 and 17 who regularly watch reality shows believe these programmes describe real life. In fact, much of reality TV is a heavily manipulated view of what’s really happening, and the worst of it strengthens the sort of female stereotypes women have spent decades trying to remove.

Many of the women on reality TV shows are acting out lives as teenage mothers or drama queens. Strong, hard-working, purposeful young women with ambitions beyond their looks are rare in these programmes. There’s a widespread emphasis on the value of women being about how they look and dress, which gives young viewers the message that being a woman is all about style and appearance, not what you do or stand for.

Cultural critic and writer Jennifer Pozner describes reality TV as “the contemporary negative reaction against feminism”. Imran Siddiquee, Director of Social Media and Outreach, is concerned that these programmes show the worst stereotypes of womanhood and “normalize” them in what appear to be everyday settings. “ They offer such a limited view of what it is to be a woman, and all over the world young girls are addicted to it,” he says.

Siddiquee does recognize, however, that many girls themselves value reality TV. Some say it encourages them to think about situations different from their own. They also point out that some shows feature women running their own successful businesses. “It’s important to acknowledge  that there are some useful elements in reality TV,” Siddiquee says. “But many girls need to be inspired to think more critically about some aspects of these shows so they’re not manipulated by them and so their behaviour doesn’t change because of them.”

We should encourage our children to be critical thinkers and help them develop their media literacy. Whether reality TV is changing our children’s views, or whether they are attracted to programmes that agree with their beliefs, it’s vital we recognize that their viewing habits could strengthen these unbalanced ideas.

  • 22、Buying sunglasses can leave anyone puzzled by choice. But Bose may have stuck the landing in the style department with its new Bose Frames, designed to pump music directly into your ears and work with apps to deliver walking instructions and more.

Bose Frames look better than most smart glasses already around. The Frames are black, with gold accents on the power button. Those thick arms look like a pair of designer sunglasses you'd get from some pop shops guaranteed to be out of business in a year. More than one person commented on the Frames while I wore them around town, and two of my co-workers thought they looked surprisingly cool. And that was before they knew about the built-it speakers.

The Frames sound as great as they look, at least when you compare them to the headphones that came with your smart phones. In each of the Frames' arms is a mini speaker pumping music directly at your ears without being all up in them like typical earbuds (耳塞). On the outside of each arm is another speaker designed to cancel out what the inside one is playing. The end result: music you can hear, and silence anybody nearby can appreciate. Mostly.

Of course, you shouldn't wear these indoors or in a quiet environment, like a library. Bose Frames are essentially wearable speakers, meaning they leak sound, so people nearby can still hear something.

Bose Frames are not for everyone, nor are they great for every situation-sometimes, regular old headphones are more socially appropriate. But once you get over the astonishment that you're wearing a pair of glasses with built-in speakers, you might find them becoming a seasonal addition to you. If you're in the market for sunglasses, and are willing to drop two hundred dollars on a pair, Bose Frames are a solid option for every fashion forward futurist.

【1】What impressed the author's colleagues at first about Bose Frames?

    A.The low price.

    B.The good look.

    C.The limited edition.

    D.The mini speakers.

【2】What are the outside speakers of Bose Frames used for?

    A.Avoiding leaking any sound.

    B.Connecting to smart phones.

    C.Pumping music directly into ears.

    D.Decreasing disturbance to people around.

【3】For what purpose does the author write the text?

A.To give tips on how to choose suitable sunglasses.

B.To compare traditional and high-tech sunglasses.

C.To introduce the newly designed Bose sunglasses.

D.To share the experience of wearing Bose sunglasses.

  • 23、Maybe you’ve wondered what you would hear if plants could speak. A stream of gossip from the roses? Wise whispering from the branches of an old tree? A faint, high-pitched cry of terror when your older brother takes out the lawn mower(割草机)?

Ariel Novoplansky, an ecologist in Israel, is studying how plants communicate with each other. To listen in, he set up a kind of telephone game among plants in his lab. Experiment used pea plants standing in rows of containers. The center plant in each row was the target: Scientists would stress out that plant and see whether the plants on either side of it picked up any alarm signals.

The pea plants had been grown with two main roots. On one side of the stressed plant, each plant had one root in its own pot and the other reaching into a neighbor’s pot. The central plant connected to its closest neighbor, which connected to another neighbor, and so on down the line. On the other side of the stressed plant, all the plants kept their roots in their own pots unconnected to their neighbors. Then the scientists dried up the soil of the central target plant, creating a drought.

Within 15 minutes, the dried-out plant reacted the same way it would in nature: it had closed up the tiny pores(气孔) on its leaves to save water. What’s amazing is that the central plant’s closest neighbor with connected roots had also closed up its leaf pores. And after an hour, the message had traveled down the whole row of connected plants. On the other side of the pea chain, where the plants’ roots weren’t connected, all their pores stayed open. This means the warning signal traveled from the stressed plant’s roots through the soil.

Dried-out roots aren’t the only talkative plant parts scientists have discovered. When sugar maple trees are damaged, they send signals through the air telling their neighbors to produce bad-tasting chemicals. When caterpillars chew on corn leaves, nearby corn plants also make more self-defense molecules(分子). The plants around us may not be speaking with any volume, but they are saying plenty.

【1】What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

    A.To make a prediction.

    B.To raise a discussion.

    C.To develop a theory.

    D.To introduce a research.

【2】How did Novoplansky conduct his experiment?

A.By stressing out the target plant.

B.By sending alarming signals to plants.

C.By growing pea plants with different roots.

D.By drying out the soil of the plants in rows.

【3】What do we know about the pea plants according to the text?

A.They are able to communicate with the gardeners.

B.They send warning signals to others through the air.

C.They close up their leaf pores as a stress reaction.

D.They are the most talkative plants found by scientists.

【4】Where is this text probably taken from?

    A.A news report.

    B.A science journal.

    C.A gardening guide.

    D.A business magazine.
