  • 21、Imagine a warm spring day 66 million years ago. Fish would have been swimming in the rivers in an area that’s now North Dakota in the US. Seconds later, the serenity (宁静) was ended by destruction.

These could have been the very last moments of the dinosaur era when a city-sized asteroid (小行星) struck Earth, killing off three quarters of all species on the planet. According to a study published in Nature on Feb 23, the asteroid hit in springtime.

Researchers in 2019 discovered fossilized fishes in North Dakota that died shortly after the asteroid hit Earth. They examined the fossils with a particle accelerator and found out there was seasonal growth on the bones. All fish bone cell densities and volumes can indicate the season. Because the accelerator also could capture the sizes, researchers were able to determine when in the year the asteroid hit, Dennis Voeten, a researcher at Uppsala University in Sweden told USA Today.

The timing of the collision, at least for the Northern Hemisphere, came at a particularly sensitive stage. “I think spring puts a large group of the late Cretaceous biota (白垩纪生物) in a very vulnerable spot because they were out and about looking for food, attending to offspring and trying to build up resources after the harsh winter.” Melanie During, the main author of the study, said at a news briefing.

In the Southern Hemisphere, it was autumn, a season when many creatures prepare for winter. Therefore, life in the Southern Hemisphere was a lot more prepared for this event.

It is unclear whether small animals in the Northern Hemisphere actual did worse than those in the south. There is evidence that Northern Hemisphere turtles were wiped out in the asteroid strike, after which their habitats were later repopulated by turtles from the south, Voeten told The Guardian.

【1】On what basis did researchers determine the time of year the asteroid hit?

A.The kinds of fossilized fish cells.

B.The number of fish fossils in the area.

C.The appearance of different fish species.

D.The volume and density of fossilized fish bones.

【2】What does the underlined word “offspring” most likely mean in paragraph 4?

    A.The young.

    B.A season.

    C.The homeless.

    D.A creature.

【3】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The time of the asteroid strike was the same around the globe.

B.There were still turtles in the Northern Hemisphere after the asteroid strike.

C.No creatures could survive the asteroid impact whether in the south or north.

D.The extinction of many species has little to do with the asteroid strike.

【4】What’s the main purpose of the article?

A.To discuss why dinosaurs went extinct.

B.To explain the science behind asteroids.

C.To explore the impact of the asteroid strike.

D.To report on new research on the asteroid strike.

  • 22、The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is an internationally recognized qualification for entry into higher education. Usually, 16- to 19-year-olds take it during the last two years of high school. High-achieving high school students who want an international perspective in a variety of subjects should consider this program.

The IB Program includes three required courses. The first, Theory of Knowledge, discusses where knowledge comes from and how to analyze information. The second required course, Extended Essay, involves researching a subject of the student’s choice and writing a 4,000-word essay on it. The third requirement, called Creativity, Activity, Service, requires 50 hours of work outside of class in each of the three areas. Creativity includes theater, music and art. Activity refers to sports, and service means volunteering.

The program includes classes in six other subject areas as well: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics and the arts. Students are expected to take one class from each subject area. However, they can choose an additional course from one of the other areas as a substitution for the arts requirement.

The IB Program introduces students to a wide range of courses. This can give students a leg up in university applications because it shows they can learn about many different subjects. On the other hand, the variety of subjects means that students can only take one or two classes in any one area. Therefore, students who want to specialize in fields such as medicine or engineering may as well take more classes in a single subject area. IB may not be a good fit for these students.

The IB Program is time-consuming and intellectually challenging. Not all students will desire or feel equipped to put in the work. For those who pursue it, however, the IB Program offers a wide-ranging education focused on developing skills students will need in life.

【1】Who is recommended to participate in the IB Program?

    A.Students pursuing engineering.

    B.Students wanting to serve others.

    C.Students hunting for an occupation.

    D.Students interested in various fields.

【2】What can we know about the course arrangement of IB Program?

A.It demands students should be good at a particular sport.

B.It allows students to select another course to replace arts.

C.It advises students should graduate from high school first.

D.It requires students to choose one course in each subject area.

【3】What does the phrase “a leg up” probably mean in paragraph 4?

    A.An advantage.

    B.A certificate.

    C.A fast speed.

    D.A suggestion.

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Applications for IB Program.

    B.Required courses in IB Program.

    C.An introduction of IB Program.

    D.Suitable participants for IB Program.

  • 23、   Zero-emission large passenger aircraft powered by hydrogen will be technically possible in five years, according to Airbus, but they will not enter service for at least a decade as the price of the fuel needs to come down.

The prediction comes from Glenn Llewellyn, vice-president of zero-emissions technology at the pan-European plane-maker. He said that while Airbus planned to demonstrate hydrogen-powered aircraft in 2025, over the next 10 years, hydrogen won’t be more economical than the fossil fuel.

For passengers to be flying genuinely emissions free aboard hydrogen-powered planeswhich emit only water and heat their fuel needs to come from hydrogen produced via renewable sources such as wind and solar, he added.

In an interview ahead of the Bloomberg NEF London Summit, Mr. Llewellyn said, “We already see massive increases in the amount of renewable energy being produced across the world. Wind energy production has multiplied by two over the last five years and solar energy production has multiplied by four.”

A further challenge is building up the ecosystem that hydrogen aircraft, along with other forms of transport, will need. This ranges from creating the fuel from electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen powered by renewable energy, to the actual transport of the gas and fueling systems for it at airports.

However, Mr. Llewellyn predicted that there was enough interest in the sector to make this happen. He added, “There are a number of independent institutes that have mapped out how hydrogen costs can come down over the next decades. We see a 30pc reduction in renewable hydrogen costs in 2030 compared to where it is today, and a 50pc reduction in renewable hydrogen costs by 2050.”

1What can we know about the hydrogen-powered aircraft according to the passage?

A.It will be an unrealistic dream. B.The cost of its fuel keeps rising.

C.It will be accessible within a decade. D.Renewable energy makes it environmentally friendly.

2What did Mr. Llewellyn say about renewable energy?

A.It gains growing popularity throughout the world.

B.More wind energy has been produced than solar energy.

C.Hydrogen can only be generated from wind and solar energy.

D.Hydrogen will be cheaper than fossil fuel in the coming ten years.

3What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.Ecosystem B.Challenge C.Aircraft D.Prediction

4What is Mr. Llewellyn’s attitude towards the future of hydrogen-powered aircraft?

    A.Objective B.Optimistic. C.Doubtful. D.Pessimistic

  • 24、   Around the world coronavirus outbreak has messed up children's education. They began to be shut out of classrooms all the way back in February in 2020. Even in countries where schools have stayed open, lessons and tests have been disrupted. Some countries pressed ahead with national exams this year. A few others, including Britain, France and Ireland, cancelled them all. They came up with new ways of awarding grades instead. The fact that big exams have proved so vulnerable to disruption has led to new questions about their usefulness. Are there better ways of measuring what children have learned?

Exams have plenty of problems. They are often unreliable; a study in Israel found that test-takers' performance can be affected by smog. Many children find them stressful. Plenty of places run them badly. School-leavers in some countries are often set nonsense questions that require students to answer. Countries, including Algeria and Ethiopia , make efforts to shut down the internet at exam time to prevent potential cheating. Grades in American high schools are inflating fast, in part because pushy middle-class parents insist their little darlings deserve better.

Cancelling exams does not always reduce pupils' anxiety. In many countries the prospect 一and pressure一of exams probably helped get pupils back into classrooms after lockdowns came to an end. Those facing important tests were generally invited back to school first. Their return helped give teachers and parents confidence that other. pupils could safely join them. Kenya ended up letting exam-takers return to school in October, even though it had previously announced that it was cancelling all classes until the end of 2020. Some countries that called off exams this year are still deciding whether and how to hold them in 2021.

Governments may need to adjust next year's tests, as many did this year. That could mean cutting the amount of material to be tested. Exam boards may also have to boost the grades of pupils who have spent the most time out of the classroom. But the most important exams should go ahead in some form.

Many pupils have studied ferociously throughout this difficult year. They should have the chance to earn the grades they deserve.

【1】In the Israeli study, what results in exam's unreliability?

A.Some countries shut down internet at exam time.

B.Exams' grades can be affected by children's temper.

C.Questions in exams measure what has been learned.

D.Teachers may give unreal grades to meet special needs.

【2】What can we know about the pressure of exams?

A.It always makes students anxious in exams.

B.It is relieved when exams are cancelled.

C.It gives teachers confidence to return school safely.

D.It helps students get back on track after quarantines.

【3】According to the last paragraph, what governments need to do next year?

    A.Change the testing materials.

    B.Cancel the most important exams.

C.Raise the grades of student who kept studying.

D.Reschedule the exams which are cancelled this year.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Education and Examinations

    B.Covid-19 and School Exams

    C.Ways Better than Examinations

    D.How to Pass Examinations
