二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Katie always knew she wanted to be a performer. She was fond of Disney movies from an early age and would often sing along with her mom, Karen.

When Katie was nine years old, her happy childhood took a turn when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. When the doctor informed the Whetsell family that Karen's disease was terminal, they made a decision. Disney World had been a longtime dream vacation for Karen. So in November 1997, the family packed up and headed to Disney World. Katie says she'll never forget the moment that changed her life on that trip: After a long day at the parks, the Whetsells decided to see one of Disney World's many nightly light shows. While watching, a Disney cast member performing in the parade came up to her mom and rested her hand on Karen's shoulder. They exchanged smiles and, to this day, Katie remembered how at peace her mom looked. The whole family was touched and moved to tears. This was the day Katie decided she wanted to work for Disney.

After graduating from college, Katie went on to pursue performing for a living. She struggled for years, working as a waitress and trying to make it as an actor. Her hard work and passion finally paid off when she was hired to work on Disney Cruise Lines in 2009. Katie's favorite friend in the Disney World is Dory in "Finding Nemo the Musical". She says that Dory has taught her the value of living in the present moment and to "just keep swimming."

Katie has never lost sight of the fact that she and others who work for the company bring joy to the lives of many every day. "Everything we do at the parks makes a difference to many families. It's a way for us to help them forget. It's amazing to be able to comfort others." When asked what her mother would think of her working at Disney World, she takes a deep breath and allows the tears to flow. "I just feel like she'd be so proud. I can feel her presence often and I feel her having a part in what I do. It's perfect."

1Why did the Whetsell family decide to go to Disney World in November 1997?

A.The Disney World has always been a good place for vacation.

B.Karen was seriously ill and Disney World was what she had dreamed for.

C.The Whetsell family were all fond of Disney characters.

D.Katie always wanted to go to the Disney World to be a performer.

2What happened during the Disney trip that changed Katie’s life?

A.Katie took part in the parade performance and realized her dream.

B.The whole family enjoyed themselves in the nightly light shows.

C.A performer in the Disney parade brought comfort to her mom.

D.Karen was invited to perform with cast members and she felt satisfied.

3What’s the purpose to mention Katie’s favorite friend Dory?

A.To inform us more of Katie’s struggling life.

B.To introduce another Disney character named Dory.

C.To imply Katie’s understanding of life.

D.To tell us the importance to keep going.

4Which of the following can best describe Katie’s personality?

A.Intelligent and industrious. B.Diligent and dependent.

C.Selfless and sympathetic. D.Persistent and positive.

  • 22、   Genetic modification (基因改良) dates back to ancient times, when humans influenced genetics by selectively breeding organisms (培育生物) according to an article by Gabriel Rangel, a public health scientist at Harvard University. When repeated over several generations, this process leads to great changes in the organisms.

Dogs were likely the first animals to be purposefully genetically modified, with the beginnings of that effort dating back about 32,000 years, according to Rangel. Wild wolves joined our hunter-gatherer ancestors in East Asia, where the aggressive canines were kept in the household and bred to become docile and easier to get along with. Over thousands of years, people bred dogs with different desired character and physical characteristics, eventually leading to the wide variety of dogs we see today.

The earliest known genetically modified plant is wheat. This valuable crop is thought to have originated in the Middle East and northern Africa in the area known as the Fertile Crescent, according to a 2015 article published in the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine. Ancient farmers selectively bred wheat grasses beginning around 9000 B. C. to create improved varieties with larger grains and hardier seeds. By 800 B.C., the cultivation (培养) of improved wheat had spread across Europe and Asia. The continued selective cultivation of wheat resulted in the thousands of varieties that are grown today.

Corn has also experienced some of greatest genetic changes over the past few thousand years. The main crop was changed from a plant known as teosinte, a wild grass with tiny ears and only a few seeds. Over time, farmers selectively bred the teosinte grasses to create corn with large ears bursting with seeds.

Beyond those crops, many of the fruit and vegetables we eat today, including bananas, apples and tomatoes, have experienced several generations of selective raising, according to Rangel.

In 1973, researchers also modified bacteria to be used as drugs. In 1982, human insulin (胰岛素) made from genetically engineered bacteria, became the first genetically engineered human drugs approved by the FDA.

1What does the word “docile” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?

    A.Gentle. B.Loyal. C.Smart. D.Ambitious.

2How did the ancient farmers try to improve wheat?

A.Through selective cultivation. B.By editing its genes constantly.

C.Through mixture with teosinte. D.By planting it in large numbers.

3What can we infer about genetic modification?

A.It is rarely seen in daily life. B.It was quite difficult to accept.

C.It is hardly influenced by humans. D.It played a role in medical field.

4From which section of a newspaper is the text most probably taken?

    A.Health. B.Lifestyle. C.Science. D.Agriculture.

  • 23、   Much of the United States is locked by an unusually large winter storm, which has sent temperatures dropping sharply across the country, from coast to coast and as far south as southern Texas. In many areas, ice and snow storms have added to the challenges. Only a few areas in the south have dodged the freezing weather pattern. The National Weather Service( NWS) says that a winter storm, this large and this serious, has almost never been seen before.

The NWS reports that over 150 million Americans were under winter storm warnings. In Texas, over 2.7 million people were left without power on Monday. Texas isn't used to such serious winter weather. In the city of Houston, temperatures have dropped to - 9℃. The storm has led to huge, deadly highway accidents, and has forced its airport to cancel flights. On Sunday, President Joe Biden declared an emergency in Texas, allowing the state to get more help for the weather disaster from the US government. Several other states have declared some sort of weather-related emergency. In Washington and Oregon, warming shelters were opened to help people stay warm and safe.

The NWS says cold air from the Arctic is behind the record-breaking low temperatures. Though it may seem surprising, global warming may be one of the causes. A strong wind known as the jet stream usually flows in a circle around the Arctic, keeping super-cold air near the North Pole. But as the jet stream weakens because of climate change, the cold air is able to escape the Arctic and bring freezing temperatures to places that are normally much warmer.

The NWS is forecasting there’ll be more snow and freezing rain over the next few days as a new storm cuts up toward the Northeast from the middle of the country. The NWS says that much of the country will continue to have extremely cold temperatures, and it's likely that hundreds of cold weather records will be broken. Perhaps, people should think about the consequences of global warming.

【1】Which can best replace the underlined word “dodged” in paragraph 1?

    A.Seen.

    B.Recorded.

    C.Avoided.

    D.Defeated.

【2】Why does the author mention Texas?

A.It’s hit the hardest by extreme weather.

B.It's brought the super cold under control.

C.It's the first to warn of the climate disaster.

D.It's helping other states with the winter storm.

【3】What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?

A.How the jet stream forms in the Arctic.

B.What causes the extreme cold in America.

C.Why the cold air escapes from the Arctic.

D.When the global warming affects America.

【4】What is the NWS’s prediction about the rough weather?

    A.It’ll change climate permanently.

    B.It’ll cause another new storm.

    C.It’ll lessen global warming.

D.It’ll go on for some time.

  • 24、The benefits of taking a nap.

Naps can charge your brain’s batteries

Taking a nap may make you more alert for the period right after you wake up and maybe hours into the day. A short sleep may also make you feel more relaxed.

You’ll have lower risk for heart problems

Taking a nap once or twice a week could lower the risk of heart attacks or strokes, according to a 2019 study published in the journal Heart.

After tracking more than 3,400 people between the ages of 35 and 75 for slightly more than five years, the researchers found that those who indulged in occasional napping -- once or twice a week, for five minutes to an hour -- were 48% less likely than those who didn’t nap to experience a heart attack, stroke or heart failure.

It might even help you get into shape

A 2020 study focusing on women found the more sleep-deprived the women were, the more likely they were to consume added sugar, fatty foods and caffeine.

A lack of quality sleep could lead to overeating because inadequate sleep is believed to stimulate hunger and suppress hormone signals that communicate fullness. The findings were important because women are at high risk for obesity and sleep disorders, the researchers said, which can both be driven by a high intake of food. Napping has been found to improve the overall quality of even nighttime sleep.

    And boost your creativity

The right side of your brain might experience a mental spark during a nap, research has suggested. The right side is the hemisphere most associated with creative tasks, such as visualization and thinking, while the left is more analytic.

Researchers monitoring the brain activity of 15 people found that the right side of their brain communicated busily with itself as well as with its left counterpart. The left side of the brain, however, remained relatively quiet. In a January 2020 study of 2,214 Chinese adults ages 60 and older, participants who took afternoon naps for five minutes to two hours showed better mental agility than those who didn’t nap.

【1】What was the study in 2019 based on?

    A.sleep time

    B.subject age

    C.study size

    D.sleep rate

    【2】Accordingto the 2020 study, the sleep-deprived women like eating ________ .

    A.fruit and sea food

    B.vegetable and wine

    C.dessert and coffee

    D.noodles and snacks

【3】How did the author develop the last paragraph?

    A.By description.

    B.By making comparison.

    C.By showing figures.

    D.By offering an example.
