二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As a financial adviser, my clients come to me seeking help with growing their wealth. Perhaps the greatest lesson I share is that being rich isn’t a dollar amount; it is a perception that includes happiness, peace of mind, comfort and security. There’s a big difference between being wealthy and feeling wealthy.

Actually, one of the best ways I advise others in building their wealth is this: The secret to having more is giving more. Studies have shown that people who volunteer weekly exhibit an increase in happiness. Donating your time makes you grateful for all that you have, and you’ll have the unmatched joy and excitement of knowing you made a huge impact for the good of others.

Volunteering enables you to increase your relationship skills and encourages you to have conversations with people from very different walks of life. You can even make new friends. It is also a wonderful activity that families can do together. This has the added benefit of serving as a good role model to your children. I am encouraging my kids to volunteer and experience the power of love for themselves.

Without fail, every time I volunteer, I have conversations that change my life in some way. I was once volunteering at a local shelter and struck up a conversation with other volunteers. As we chatted, we all suddenly realized: The massive gratitude of those receiving help acted like a nuclear bomb going off in our hearts, and it also touched the other volunteers, making us all realize how truly blessed we are.

Giving our time, money and energy gives us a sense of achievement like nothing else. If “wealth” really is a perception of happiness, comfort and security, we must learn to get outside our own experience and understand what wealth means to other people.

【1】What is the author’s understanding of wealth?

A.It is more of a state of mind.

B.It gives one the duty to help others.

【2】What makes a person appreciate what he has already owned?

    A.Winning people’s recognition.

    B.Spending time helping others.

C.Making a deep impression on others.

    D.Improving one’s interpersonal skills.

【3】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

    A.Benefits of volunteering.

    B.Parents’ roles in a family.

    C.Importance of social skills.

    D.Ways of being a volunteer.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.A Road to Real Wealth in Life

    B.A Lesson in Wealth Management

C.A Different Way to Pursue Happiness

    D.A Life-changing Volunteering Experience

  • 22、In 2016, inspired by a challenge called the “16 for 16”, where a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media, Lorna Klefsaas decided to up the ante (赌注) to two extra years and $200 more for her son, Sivert Klefsaas.

As a 12-year-old, Sivert wasn’t using social media much. The only app he had prior to the bet was Snapchat — which he deleted a day after trying it out. So it wasn’t too difficult to live without social media, and he didn’t think about it much during the six years. “I wouldn’t say there was ever a time when I thought I was about to break,” he said. “As it went on, it was more of a pride thing.”

Lorna never had to check for any secretly downloaded apps. “I got to avoid all the unnecessary drama that was on there. I had my friends to keep me up to date on the latest information or trends.” Sivert said. “It meant I had more time to focus on my grades and sports instead.”

On February 19, 2022, Sivert claimed his prize. Now $1,800 richer, Sivert hasn’t thought about what to buy, but it’ll likely be something for his dorm room at the University of St. Paul, which he’ll attend in the fall.

After Sivert’s success, Lorna turned to Facebook to share the challenge. She said it was some of the best money she ever spent. Other parents seemed interested in trying it out too. “We are certainly not against social media, but it’s the healthy using of it,” Lorna noted. “It’s about not letting yourself get weighed down by it, or addicted to it, or affected by things that people post.”

Now Sivert has a new perspective on staying off social media. “It was awesome. Ah, what about 6 more years? Thank you, Mom.”

【1】Why did Lorna bet her son?

    A.To challenge.

    B.To persuade.

    C.To punish.

    D.To imitate.

【2】How did Sivert respond to the bet?

    A.He almost became broken down.

B.He jumped at the idea and stuck to it.

C.He tried out his new app continuously.

D.He just downloaded an app, Snapchat.

【3】How did Sivert get through the six years without social media?

A.By being supervised by his mother.

B.By watching dramas in the theater.

C.By aiming at his academic standards.

D.By dreaming of his prize with eagerness.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the passage?

    A.A successful 18-for-18 bet.

    B.A social media campaign.

C.Sivert, a boy who won the bet.

D.Lorna, a mother who awarded her son.

  • 23、As self-driving cars come closer to being common on American roads, much of the rhetoric(说辞)promoting them has to do with safety. About 40,000 people die on U.S. roads every year, and driver errors are linked to more than 90 percent of crashes. But many of the biggest advocates of autonomous(自动的)vehicles aren’t car companies looking to improve the safety of their existing products. Huge support for itself-driving technologies is coming from Silicon Valley giants like Google and Apple.

Those of us who have studied the relationship between technology and society tend to look more carefully at the motivations behind any technologically push. In this case, it’s clear that in addition to addressing safety concerns, Silicon Valley firms have a strong incentive(动机)to create a new venue for increasing the use of their digital devices. Every minute people spend on their mobile phones provides data—and often money—to tech companies.

At present, digital devices and driving are in conflict: There are serious, often fatal, consequences when drivers use smartphones to talk or to text. Regulators and safety advocates look to resolve dial conflict by banning phone use while driving – as has happened in almost every state. But the tech companies are taking a different approach. The obvious answer for Silicon Valley is creating an automobile in which continuous cellphone use no longer poses a threat to anyone.

In recent years, the amount of time adults spend on their mobile devices has grown rapidly. At the moment, it’s around four hours a day for the average adult in the U.S. However, that rapid growth is likely to slow down as people run out of time that’s available for them up to use their devices. Unless, of course, there’s a new block of time that suddenly opens up. The average American now spends about 48 minutes in a car every day, a sizeable opportunity for increased cellphone use.

Sop as the public conversation around autonomous cars highlights the safety advantages, don’t forget the tech industry’s powerful desire for more profits, which goes well beyond simply saving us from ourselves.

1Who are responsible for most traffic accidents in American?

    A. Car companies.   B. Drivers.

    C. Tech companies.   D. Self-driving cars.

2What pushes Silicon Valley to promote self-driving technologies?

    A. To make more money.   B. To reduce traffic accidents.

    C. To limit the use of digital devices.   D. To support car companies.

3What does the underlined phrase “a new block of time” possibly refer to?

    A. The working time.   B. People’s spare time.

    C. The time spent in the car.   D. The time spent on mobile devices.

4What can we know from the passage?

    A. We should teach people to strictly obey traffic rules.

    B. The writer calls on us to look at autonomous cars wisely.

    C. Car companies are the leading promoters of self-driving cars.

    D. No solution to the conflict between mobile phone use and driving has been found yet.

  • 24、The Fallas Festival (法雅节) in Spain

It is sometimes strange how world-famous festivals are started. 【1】 It takes place every March in Valencia of Spain.

Centuries ago, the city’s carpenters would empty their houses of all the old wood they had saved over the winter and burn it all in the local square. Over time, the carpenters began to use their old wood to carve different images. 【2】 Everyone would come to take a look and everything would be burnt.

The Fallas Festival is now one of the most popular festivals in Spain. 【3】 Today, 350 communities that make up Valencia work together to design and make two sculptures. These larger-than-life sculptures, often several meters high, are still made of wood, but also include cardboard. On the 15th of March, the sculptures are paraded around the city.

【4】 These will not be burnt at the end of the festival. They are instead, saved and placed in the local museum, which is open throughout the year. During the festival, there are lots of different community activities. Every activity ends with fireworks being let off during both the day and night.

The Fallas Festival always bring communities together. On the final night, all the sculptures are collected and put on a bonfire (大火堆) in the main Valencia square. The fire is lit and all the year's hard work comes to an end in towers of flames. 【5】
