26、Writing journals has been one of the most helpful things I’ve ever done. Through writing journals I’ve not only learned a lot about myself, but also removed a lot of obsessive (烦恼的) thoughts, by writing them down and considering them.
Journals give you a place to write down your honest thoughts without being afraid of what people will think of you. There are some ideas for writing journals:
Draw pictures
Write poetry or short stories
Goals: daily and long-term
Respond to a magazine article that you are interested in
Write about obsessive thoughts and try to find what’s causing them
A list of things you are proud of (It can always increase your confidence when you need it)
Make a pro/con (赞成/反对) list when you’re trying to make a decision: most of the time the decision will start to be clearer afterwards
The best way to start is to decide where you want to write your journal. (Though it’s called the journal, it doesn’t mean you can only do it in a “journal”) . If you like the traditional style of journals, then use a notebook, blank paper or graph paper, whichever you like best. If you prefer to go digital, start a blog. You can make the blog public or private, and it’s a good way to keep track of articles or pictures you find online. (You can link to them.)
Even if you feel there’s nothing for you to write about at first, you might be surprised to find that once you start, you can’t stop.
【1】What does writing journals help the author do?
A. Make many friends.
B. Do many helpful things.
C. Be free from some worries.
D. Learn a lot about other people.
【2】Why is making a pro/con list useful?
A. It increases your confidence.
B. It helps you get what you want.
C. It helps you make great progress.
D. It helps you decide what to do.
【3】 What do you think about writing journals as a beginner?
A. You have little to write.
B. Writing journals is fun.
C. You’re good at writing.
D. It’s hard to keep track of articles.
27、The sun rises above the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋). Across the frozen sea, a white bear moves slowly.
The bear stops and sways his head from side to side. There is nothing to see but endless ice and red sky. Then his powerful nose senses what his eyes cannot: a beluga whale is nearby.
The bear follows the smell and spots a large hole in the ice where a small white whale is swimming. He silently walks toward the hole, then stops, standing still. The whale does not see the bear, whose white fur makes him appear invisible against the ice.
Finally, the whale swims close to where the bear is waiting. With terrifying speed, the bear comes to life and moves toward the whale. In a moment it is over, and the bear eats his first meal in nearly a week.
Polar bears rule the frozen sea, but their ancestors weren’t always built for ice and snow. The first Arctic bears were brown bears, a species that includes grizzly bears. They came to the icy north over a hundred thousand years ago.
No one knows for sure why these bears traveled to such a cold place. Scientists think they might have wandered north looking for food. Maybe they became trapped by glaciers and couldn’t leave. Whatever the reason, the bears never should have survived.
But they did. They got used to their new environment. Their bodies changed. Their behavior changed, too. Eventually, the bears developed into an entirely new species: the polar bear. You can see some of the characteristics that polar bears developed to survive.
Sadly, these characteristics may now threaten the polar bear’s survival. As sea ice melts due to global warming, polar bears are frequently forced to come ashore. They are poor hunters on land, which means they often go a long time between meals. The polar bear, king of the Arctic, is now classified as a threatened species.
Although the future of the polar bear is unknown, the tale of two bears continues. As temperatures rise, grizzly bears have been spotted moving north into polar bear territory. These longlost cousins, once forced apart by nature, are coming back together again.

A.They were a darkercolored species.
B.They were born to live in ice and snow.

【3】Why are polar bears struggling to survive?

D.They have difficulty reaching the shore.
【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

28、Charles Darwin’s notebooks were first reported missing to the public in 2020. An anonymous (匿名的) person has returned Darwin’s two notebooks to the Cambridge University library. The notebooks, which include Darwin’s 1837 Tree of Life introductions, were returned to the library last month in a bright pink gift bag. “My sense of relief at the notebooks’ safe return is great and almost impossible to express,” said librarian Dr. Jessica Gardner.
The notebooks had been missing for long, while librarians had supposed they had just been misplaced. The library plans to put the notebooks on show in July as part of a coming exhibition (展览) called “Darwin in Conversation”. The Tree of Life is said to show Darwin’s thinking before he completed On the Origin of Species. “Objects like these help with our understanding of the history of humans,” said Stephen Toope, a professor at Cambridge.
The library said the notebooks were first removed in 2000 from the Special Collections Strong Rooms, home to the rarest and most valuable things. A usual check in January 2001 found that the small box having the notebooks was not returned to its right place, After a number of searches throughout the library over the years, the notebooks were not found. Gardner arranged a more careful search in 2020, led by experts who conducted fingertip examinations. The team searched the whole Darwin Archive, which includes more than 180 boxes. After these efforts failed, they had the result that the notebooks had been stolen.
Local police are pleased that the notebooks have finally been found. “We share the university’s delight that these priceless notebooks are now back where they belong,” a Cambridge police spokesman said. “Our investigation (调查) remains open and we are following up some lines of questions.”

29、Ask a teacher to name the most annoying invention of recent years and they will often mention the mobile phone. Disturbed by the problems they create, many head teachers have ordered that pupils should keep their phones switched off at school. Others have told pupils to leave them at home.
However, education researchers at The University of Nottingham believe it is time that phone bans were reassessed, because mobile phones can be a powerful learning aid, they say. Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young and her colleagues have reached this conclusion after studying the consequences of allowing pupils in five secondary schools to use either their own mobile phones or the new generation of ‘smartphones’ in lessons.
During the nine-month experiment, 14- to 16-year-old pupils used the phones for a wide range of educational purposes, including creating short movies, setting homework reminders, recording a teacher reading a poem, and timing experiments with the phones’ stopwatches. The smartphones, which could be connected to the Internet, also allowed pupils to access revision websites, log into the school email system, or transfer (转存) electronic files between school and home.
The research involved 331 pupils in schools in Cambridgeshire, West Berkshire and Nottingham. “At the start of the study, even pupils were often surprised at the thought that mobile phones could be used for learning,” Dr Hartnell-Young said. “After their hands-on experience, almost all pupils said they had enjoyed the project and felt more inspired.”
Some teachers found that pupils who lacked confidence gained most from the project. However, they recognised that greater use of mobile phones in schools could cause problems.
