26、What if our babies could somehow tell us what they’re thinking about, what they want, and what makes them unhappy? Robyn Holt, researcher for Baby Talk New Zealand, says they can. Holt heard about baby sign language through an advertisement and decided to go along to a workshop (研讨会).
“Sign language is something that’s always interested me, and I thought, it could be really cool to try this with a baby because we are always guessing all the time what they actually want.”
Holt started using baby sign language with her baby son Benjamin, now 12, and within two weeks he started to sign the sign for milk. She has since used it with her two younger sons Dominic, 8, and Matthew, 3.
Baby sign language is nothing new: the practice (which is based on adult sign language) has been out in America for more than 30 years. But it is enjoying a rebirth in New Zealand.
The idea behind baby sign language is that babies do have the ability to communicate their needs if they are given the right tools to do so. Although many mothers develop an intuition (直觉) about whether their baby’s crying is from hunger, tiredness, or pain, baby sign language creates a direct form of communication that unlocks the mystery.
When babies are between 6-months and 12 to 13-months, parents can begin to teach them sign language: use the sign for milk while feeding, and also talk about milk, so that the child begins to make the link (关联) in their brain. Then they can begin to add other signs, i.e. food, sick or pain.
“I know of one parent. Her child was signing the sign for hurt by his mouth, and she realised his first teeth were growing. It makes life so much easier,” said Holt.
【1】Why did Holt go to the baby sign language workshop?
A. To entertain her own children.
B. To better understand babies’ needs.
C. To help babies with language problems.
D. To develop a new system of sign language.
【2】According to the text, baby sign language _____.
A. has been used in New Zealand for 30 years
B. can easily make the parents understood
C. has developed from adult sign language
D. was designed by Robyn Holt
【3】What does the underlined part “the mystery” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The ability to communicate.
B. Mothers’ intuitions.
C. The cause of the baby’s crying.
D. Baby sign language.
【4】Holt mentioned a parent and her child to show baby sign language is _____.
A. helpful B. difficult

27、 When you are in another country, it is important to know the language, but it is equally important to know how to communicate nonverbally(不用语言地). Before saying anything, people communicate nonverbally by making gestures. According to an investigation(调查), only 30 to 35 percent of our communication is verbal. When people don’t know the language, the most common way to communicate is through gestures. However, many gestures have different meanings, or no meaning at all, in different parts of the world.
In the United States, for example, nodding your head up and down means “yes”. In some parts of Greece and Turkey, however, this motion can mean “no”. In southeast Asia, nodding your head is a polite way of saying “I’ve heard you”.
In ancient Rome, when the emperor wanted to spare someone’s life, he would put his thumb up. Today in the United States, when someone puts his/her thumb up, it means “Everything is all right.” However, in Sardinia and Greece, the gesture is insulting and should not be used there.
In the United States, raising your clasped(握紧的) hands above your head means “I’m the champion” or “I’m the winner”. It is the sign prizefighters make when they win a fight. When a leading Russian statesman(政治家) made his gesture after a White House meeting, Americans misunderstood and thought he meant he was a winner. In Russia, however, it is a sign of friendship.
There are other nonverbal signals that people should be aware of when they go to another country, such as the distance to maintain between speakers. Americans stand closer to each other than English people. English people don’t like touching somebody or being touched. Now in America, touch is important. Friends touch each other on the arm, for example. They often put an arm around a friend when they say “hello” or “goodbye”.
【1】It is very important to know how to communicate nonverbally when you are in another country because______.
A.most people speak different languages

C.people usually make gestures before saying anything
D.it’s easy to learn how to express oneself through gestures

28、 Writer and journalist Cristina Odone aroused widespread anger by suggesting that her daughter was being pressured to take science for graduation exams and this was unreasonable for a child with a literary bent. She even claimed that “this focus on STEM[Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics] subjects sends a message that makes her and me uncomfortable:doing a man's work is more impressive than doing a woman's.”
Like many others, I totally disagree with her position as a scientist. Taking science to age 16should simply be seen as part of obtaining a well-rounded education. Furthermore, identifying STEM as a man's subject leads in part to our serious lack of diversity(多样性)in the scientific workforce. Meanwhile, many male authors and poets might be surprised to learn that literature is“woman's work”.
Novelist Lucy Ellman once wrote,“The purpose of artists is to ask the right questions, even if we don't find the answers, whereas the aim of science is to prove some silly points.” But proving some silly points might save your life, light your home, allow you to surf the web or visit your relatives living far away. Only someone who has never considered how extensive the outputs of science are in our society could write such a“silly”sentence.
However, having said that, I am not trying to denigrate the work of the humanities. I do not see this as an either/or situation but it's all part of being human. I admire and appreciate those who try to express things hard to be described in words, but it simply isn't my strength. I may wholeheartedly believe that science is vital but that doesn't mean I think the humanities(or indeed the social sciences)are not. Since science costs more to do than arts subjects, more funding should go to science. That statement is not equal to saying that the humanities should not be properly funded. Somehow, we are constantly being put in opposition, a divide that is damaging to both scientists and non-scientists.
So why are the humanities important to me?I would say it is exactly because I am human. I sit here typing listening to a Schubert piano trio. I have been reading EP Thompson's The Making of the English Working Class to try to understand how our society was and is the shape it is. Scientists may be capable of dealing with the ethics(道德标准) of their work, but they cannot and should not answer the question of whether we should do this in isolation. Answering the many questions that our developing scientific capabilities throw up requires the input of researchers from many fields.
So let us enjoy our capabilities on all fronts, recognizing that we each have different strengths and weaknesses. It's time to ban the damaging divide that sets one part of the research community against another and celebrate our humanity as well as the Humanities.
【1】The writer quotes words from Cristina Odone and Lucy Ellman to show that________.
A.doing a man’s work is more impressive than doing a woman’s
B.some people may have a narrow understanding of science
C.the purposes of artists and scientists are totally different
D.a well-rounded education is crucial to the diversity in society

B.“I don't think the work of the humanities important”
C.“I don't want to play down the work of the humanities”
D.“I admire and appreciate the work of the humanities”
【3】Why does the writer mention listening to music and reading books in Paragraph 5?
A.To explain how extensive the outputs of science are.
B.To call on scientists to understand the society and the shape of it.
C.To prove that the humanities are important to scientists too.
D.To advise scientists to deal with the ethics of their work.
【4】The purpose of this passage is to________.
A.reveal people’s weakness in expressing complex thoughts in words.
B.reject the idea that science only proves some silly points.
C.illustrate that scientists have strengths and weaknesses.
D.appeal to stop treating humanities and science as opposites.
29、Recently, our school held a show called “Us After Ten Years”, where the speakers presented what they would become in the future. It was a sort of “coming-of-age” ceremony. The student representatives predicted their future careers. At first, I didn’t care about the activity, but just four days before the ceremony, my head teacher asked me to take the place of one student who got ill. I was amazed, but I had no choice, as it was an honor to be asked. “Be confident, Susan,“ she encouraged me.
There were three barriers during my preparation. Firstly, I didn’t have a clear career path at that time. Luckily, my classmates suggested that I should choose to be a diplomat, who is persuasive, hardworking, and enjoys creative thinking, like me. Secondly, I had to choose a representative scene to show my career. My first design was to hold a press conference. However, that would have taken longer than the scheduled time. Eventually, I decided on coming back to my school and giving a speech to the current students about my job. Thirdly, I had to decide the presentation style. During my first two practices, I tried to imitate the foreign ministry spokesmen. But I felt embarrassed and couldn’t find myself like a true spokesperson when speaking. I told myself, “You are unique, so just be yourself and create your own style.”
Finally the day came. Wearing a uniform, I paced backstage with my heart beating wildly. I couldn’t stop thinking, “Will I be too nervous to speak fluently? What if I don’t perform like a diplomat? Is my speech good enough?” Trying to calm myself down, I took a deep breath and then felt a little more relaxed.
Then came my time. I walked steadily onto the stage, waving to my audience. The bright lights and screams from the hall suddenly surrounded me tightly.
Fortunately, everything went as expected. When the last speech concluded, the pride. suddenly shifted into a whole sense of relief, and then a sense of I’m proud that I have overcome the mental barriers and challenges. I’m also proud of Chinese diplomats, who meet all kinds of questions and emergencies every day but manage to keep showing Chinese wisdom and conveying Chinese values. That’s the kind of person I want to be!

B.It encouraged her to overcome difficulties.
C.It increased her interest in Chinese culture.
D.It deepened her understanding of Chinese values.
【4】What does the author mainly intend to tell us in this passage?
A.How to achieve her dream.
B.How to be a good diplomat.

32、概要写作
People have been expressing their their thoughts and ideas through art for thousands of years. To do this, they have used a variety of tools and technologies. Yet Michelangelo and others have been labeled as “artists” rather than “technicians”. This means that art and technology have always been seen as two very separate things. Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology.
The art world is changing greatly as a result of the combination. Now art is more accessible to us than ever before. Take for example one of China's most famous paintings from the song dynasty, along the river during the Qingming Festvial. Thanks to technology, millions more people have been able to experience a digital version of this painting. Three-dimensional (3D) animation means that viewers can see the characters move around and interact with their surroundings. They can also watch as the different scenes change from daylight into nighttime.
The art-tech combination is also changing our concept of “art” and the “artist”. Not only can we interact with art but also we can take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more and more people are exploring their creative sides. The result has been exciting new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos.
However, such developments are making the line between art and technology less distinct. Can someone unfamiliar with traditional artists' tools really call themselves an “artist”? And is the artist the creator of art itself, or the maker of the technology behind it? A recent project used technology and data in the same way that Rembrandt used his paints and brushes. The end result, printed in 3D was a new “Rembrandt painting” created 347 years after the artist's death. These advances are perhaps bringing us closer to a time when computers rather than humans create art.
