  • 26、Coach your favourite sports to poor children in schools. Help these children to get a structured sporting education and see their joy as they pick up new skills. If that’s not enough sport for you, you can even get involved in playing with local teams in your evenings and at weekends.

    Description

As a volunteer sports coach, you and your group will head to 3 schools each day to coach your chosen sport or a variety of them. Sports coaching volunteering involves not just teaching the kids, but also acting as a good role model. Children are aged about 10–13 and are often new to playing sport in a structured environment. You don’t need to be a top player to take part (though any champions are welcome!) — it’s your patience and drive that will make the biggest effects.

    Which sports to coach?

Sports coaching volunteers can choose to specialize in coaching just one sport, but often we find that it is best to combine several sports for more variety. The freedom to choose between different sports makes the weeks even more diverse. Follow the links to find out more about each sport.

    Accommodation

·The accommodation is located in a leafy suburb 10 minutes’ drive from the city centre and the seafront.

·Sports volunteers share accommodation with childcare and teaching volunteers.

    Food

All dietary requirements can be catered for, as long as we know about them in advance. Coaching children in sport will make you hungry — many volunteers choose to supplement (补充) their meals with snacks bought in the local shops, just 10 minutes’ walk away. There is a volunteer kitchen where participants can do any cooking they wish outside of mealtimes.

    Want to go travelling afterwards?

We can arrange a week-long Garden Route tour after your time on the project. Follow the link to find out more about the Garden Route Tour.

【1】What can a volunteer do in the evenings if he wants to do more sports?

    A.Drive to the supermarket.

    B.Pay a visit to 3 schools.

    C.Match with local teams.

    D.Have a Garden Route tour.

【2】Which is the most important as sports coaching volunteers?

    A.Being a top player.

    B.Being skilled in various sports.

    C.Being able to cook well.

    D.Being motivated and patient.

【3】Where is the text probably from?

    A.A web page.

    B.A news magazine.

    C.A travel guide.

    D.An education paper.

  • 27、I had offered to watch my 3-year-old daughter, Ramanda, so that my wife could go out with a friend. I was getting some work while Ramanda appeared to be having a good time in the other room. No problem, I figured. But then it got a little too quiet and I yelled out, “What are you doing? Ramanda” No response. I repeated my question and heard her say, “Oh, nothing?” Nothing? What does “nothing” mean?

I got up from my desk and ran out into the living room, and then I saw her take off down the hall. I chased her up the stairs and watched her a little behind made a hard left into the bedroom. I was gaining on her! She took off for the bathroom. Bad move. I had her cornered. I told her to turn around. She refused. I pulled out my big, mean, authoritative(命令式的)Daddy voice, “Young lady, I said turn around!”

Slowly, she turned toward me. In her hand was what was left of my wife’s new lipstick. And every square inch of her face was covered with right red (expect her lips of course)!

As she looked up at me with fearful eyes, lips trembling, I heard every voice that had been shouted to me as a child. “How could you… you should know better than that… How many times have you been told…What a bad thing to do…”It was just a matter of my picking out which old message I was going to use on her so that she would know what a bad girl she had been. But before I could let loose, looked down at the sweatshirt my wife had put on her only an hour before. In big letters it said “I’M A PERFECT ANGEL!” I looked back up into her tearful eyes and instead to seeing a bad girl who didn’t listen, I saw a child of God …a perfect little angel full of worth, value and a wonderful spontaneity(自发行为)that I had come dangerously close t shaming out of her.

“Sweetheart, you look beautiful! Let’s take a picture so Mommy can see how special you look.” I took the picture and thanked God that I didn’t miss the opportunity to reaffirm(再肯定)what a perfect little angel he had given me.

  • 28、It was December 2018. I was finishing up my Ph.D. in the United Kingdom, and a professor I admired invited me to interview for a position in his lab in Japan. The interview went well. I was sure everything would go well in 2019.

Then, in April, my mother told me about some strange symptoms(症状) she was experiencing. “Have you submitted your thesis(毕业论文) yet?” she asked me. “Almost, Mom,” I said. She seemed to be holding back. But I was focused on finishing my experiments, so I brushed away my concern.

A week later, the doctors had an update: It was lung cancer. During the next 2 months I was torn between my research and my family as I prepared for my defense, scheduled for mid-July. My Ph.D. supervisor (导师) encouraged me to take all the time I needed to be with my mom, but my expectations for myself always pulled me back to the lab. In the meantime, cancer had spread throughout my mother's body.

Yet my scientific commitments still held me. I was set to attend a conference in New Zealand in early July. But on my way to the airport, I got the news that my mother had 1 or 2 years left. So I flew back to Madrid instead. I postponed my Ph.D. defense. Meanwhile — in just 3 weeks — the rest of my mother’s life was changed to 1 year, then months, weeks, days. Cancer beat my mother at the end of July.

I am always sorry for losing precious time with my mother. I had never slowed down before, knowing what it takes to secure an academic position. Losing my mother put things into perspective for me. I saw the humane side of science in the understanding and flexibility offered by my Ph.D. supervisor.

And the work I missed felt insignificant. I defended my thesis in September and moved to Tokyo later. I know that many people’s 2021 may feel like my 2019, with struggles and losses competing with career goals. Please, take my advice: If your loved ones need you now, be there for them. Science will be waiting when you return.

  • 29、I had the meanest mother in the whole worldWhile other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs or toastWhile others had Cokes and candy for lunch, I had to eat a sandwichAs you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids’ tooBut at least, I wasn’t alone in my sufferingsMy sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.

My mother insisted upon knowing where we were at all timesShe had to know who our friends were and where we were goingShe insisted if we said we’d be gone an hour, then we should be gone one hour or less -- not one hour and one minuteAnd she always insisted upon us telling the truthNow you can see how mean she was.

The worst is yet to comeWe had to be in bed by nine each night and up at eight the next morningWe couldn’t sleep till noon like our friendsSo while they slept - my mother actually had the courage to break the Child Labor LawShe made us  workWe had to wash dishes, make beds, and learn to cookWe had to wear clean clothes and take a bath every dayThe other kids always wore their clothes for daysWe reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save moneyI believe she laid awake at night thinking up mean things to do to us.

Through the years, things didn’t improve a bitWe could not lie in bed “sick” like our friends did, and miss schoolOur marks in school had to live up to expectationsOur friends’ report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failingMy mother, being as different as she was, would be satisfied with nothing less than ugly black marks.

As the years rolled by, first one and then the other of us was put to shameWe graduated from high schoolWith our mother behind us, talking, hitting and demanding respect, none of us was allowed the pleasure of being a drop-out.

My mother was a complete failure as a motherOut of four children, a couple of us attained some higher educationNone of us have ever been arrested or divorcedEach of my brothers served his time in the service of this countryShe forced us to grow up into God-fearing, educated, honest adultsI am now trying to raise my three childrenI am filled with pride when my children call me meanWhy? Because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the whole world.
