  • 27、Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route through the boot (行李箱).

Mr. Johnsons car had finished up in a ditch (沟渠) at Romney Marsin, Kent after skidding (打滑) on ice and hitting a bank.Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly, he said. I couldnt force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in.

Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other drivers by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape.

Later he said, It was really a half penny that saved my life. It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to open the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately trying to make someone hear, but no help came.

It took ten minutes to open the seat, and a further five minutes to clear the sweet samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a tool and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutes passed by.It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. I forced the lid down into the mud and climbed out of my car as it filled up.

His hands and arm cut and bruised, Mr.Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmers wife, Mrs.Lucy Bates. Covered with a blanket, he said,That thirty minutes seemed like hours.”“Only the tips of the car wheels were visible, police said last night. • 28、“You should get a cat, ”my therapist(治疗专家)said. “A cat?” I couldn’t even look after myself. . I took a deep breath and carefully considered the idea of welcoming a feline (猫科的)friend into my life. This seemed like too easy a fix for the fact that I couldn’t leave the house without bursting into tears.

When my partner and I found Cinnamon, her adoption profile made her out as the perfect kitten. We filled out the paperwork and prepared for her arrival.

When she came home, it became increasingly obvious that Cinnamon didn’t understand “no”, “stop it” or “don’t do that”. She was the worst cat I’ve ever owned. I was beginning to doubt my therapist’s advice.

After visiting our vet, she concluded that Cinnamon just wanted our attention. She fought tooth and nail to get a bite of our meals. She’d fearlessly lick sharp knives when left unattended for a split second. Cinnamon stole my heart with her bravery and kept me busier than I’d ever expected.

We decided to start taking her for walks. I could barely leave the house before, but my heart couldn’t say no to Cinnamon. Cinnamon showed me what bravery looked like. She didn’t stop to consider every possible outcome of a situation; she simply went for it. If there was a dog at a park, she would run toward it. She jumped without knowing where she would land. She loved adventure. I found myself mirroring her behavior after a while, jumping out of bed without a second thought. I began to find the motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

Cinnamon unfortunately passed away after a medical accident. I’m no stranger to sadness or grief, but losing my pet so suddenly was the most confusing emotional experience I’ve had to date. She no longer wakes me up at 5 am begging for breakfast, but she’s still the reason I get up every morning.

Our time is often cut unpredictably, unmistakably short. It would be a shame to live life being anything less than brave and adventurous.

  • 29、Since the 1990s, scientists have understood that missing sleep can harm someone’s health. Yet a little more than one in every three U.S. adults reported sleeping fewer than the recommended seven hours a night. Weekends may seem like a great time to catch up on sleep. Scientists, however, were not sure that it would work. So Christopher Depner, a sleep physiologist at the University of Colorado and his colleagues decided to test it out.

The team looked at three groups of people in their mid-20s. For roughly two weeks, one group slept about eight hours every night. Another group only got about five hours of shuteye a night. The third group slept some five hours each weeknight, but could sleep whenever and however much they wanted over the weekend.

Participants who got too little sleep every night gained weight. So did the weekend sleep-in crowd. By the end of the experiment, people in both groups had gain an average of 1.5 kilograms. Depner says this could be because losing sleep affects hormones (激素) that control hunger. Since weekend-catch-up sleepers both woke up later and went to bed later, they shifted their body’s internal clocks, as a result of which, they may have gotten hungry later. During the workweeks, both groups ate roughly 400 to 650 calories in late-night snacks.

But the groups were different when it came to insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity — if a person is highly sensitive to this hormone, his metabolism (新陈代谢) is healthy. After a weekend of playing catch up on sleep, those who had slept too little on weeknights showed significant drops in insulin sensitivity in their liver and muscle cells. Neither of the other two groups responded this way.

Peter Liu, a doctor who studied hormones at the University of California, once studied people who reported getting too little sleep. Yet he found that a few extra hours of sleep improved their insulin sensitivity. So the latest study, he cautions, “is not the final word on this important topic.”

【1】Based on what were the participants divided into three groups?

    A.Their living habits.

    B.Their reasons of sleep loss.

    C.Their state of health.

    D.Their sleep schedule.

    【2】What did Depner’s study find?

A.Sleep loss can lead to a low metabolic rate.

B.Sleep time is determined by the body clock.

C.Lack of sleep can make people get fatter than before.

D.Catching up on sleep on the weekend is beneficial for the health.

【3】Who suffer greatly in terms of insulin sensitivity according to Depner’s study?

    A.Those having trouble sleeping.

    B.Weekend-catch-up sleepers.

    C.Those getting too little sleep.

    D.Late-night sleepers.

【4】What is Peter Liu’s attitude to Depner’s study results?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Favorable.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Supportive.
