二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、As any homemaker who has tried to keep order at the dinner table knows, there is far more to a family meal than food. Sociologist Michael Lewis has been studying 50 families to find out just how much more.

Lewis and his co-workers carried out their study by videotaping(录像)the families while they ate ordinary meals in their own homes. They found that parents with small families talk actively with each other and their children. But as the number of children gets larger, conversation gives way to the parents’ efforts to control the loud noise they make. That can have an important effect on the children. “In general the more question-asking the parents do, the higher the children’s IQ scores,” Lewis says. “And the more children there are, the less question-asking there is.”

The study also provides an explanation for why middle children often seem to have a harder time in life than their siblings(兄弟姐妹). Lewis found that in families with three or four children, dinner conversation is likely to center on the oldest child, who has the most to talk about, and the youngest, who needs the most attention. “Middle children are invisible,” says Lewis. “When you see someone get up from the table and walk around during dinner, chances are it’s the middle child.” There is, however, one thing that stops all conversation and prevents anyone from having attention: “When the TV is on,” Lewis says, “dinner is a non-event.”

【1】The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to ______.

    A. show the relationship between parents and children

    B. report on the findings of a study

    C. teach parents ways to keep order at the dinner table

    D. give information about family problems

【2】Parents with large families ask fewer questions at dinner because ______.

    A. they are busy serving food to their children

    B. they have to pay more attention to younger children

    C. they are busy keeping order at the dinner table

    D. they are tired out having prepared food for the whole family

【3】Lewis’ research provides an answer to the question ______.

    A. why middle children seem to have more difficulties in life

    B. why TV is important in family life

    C. why parents should keep good order

    D. why children in small families seem to be quieter

【4】Which of the following statements would the writer agree to?

    A. It is important to have the right food for children.

    B. It is a good idea to have the TV on during dinner.

    C. Elder children should help the younger ones at dinner

    D. Parents should talk to each of their children frequently.

  • 28、One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw Kyle from my class walking home from school. It looked like he was carrying all of his books.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running towards him knocking all his books out of his arms so he landed in the dirt. I saw terrible sadness in his eyes.

Handing him his books, I said, "Those guys are fools. They really should get punished." He smiled at me gratefully. It was the smile that showed real gratitude. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. I invited him to play football on Saturday with me. Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

Graduation day, I saw Kyle. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. I could see that he was nervous about his speech. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years: your parents, your teachers, maybe a coach, but mostly your friends. I am here to tell you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them."

I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable." I heard the gasp(倒吸气) go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his Mom and Dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture you can change a persons life. God puts us all in each others lives to impact one another in some way. Each day is a gift from God! Dont forget to say, Thank you!

  • 29、There is growing concern about food insecurity in the developing world. Rising food prices, weather emergencies and political problems are deepening the struggle for families in many countries.

Three UN agencies have published a report recently, saying high prices are likely to continue. Gregory Barrow, who is with the World Food Program in Rome, says, “If you look at the places where the World Food Program works, particularly in developing countries, you see people who might be spending more than 60 percent of their salary in purchasing food for their families.”

East Africa is suffering its worst drought in years. In Kenya, at least three and a half million people are going hungry, mostly in the north. Yet food is going to waste in central Kenya. Now, farmers there want the government to buy their food and give it to those in need. Farmers say bad roads and lack of transportation make it difficult for them to get their produce to the market.

Mr. Barrow says, “It needs the government to make some arrangements such as providing transport. They can buy it at a good price, then give it to those people instead of asking for food from overseas, which is very bad. When we are throwing away food, they are asking for food from overseas.”

Economists say that imports reduce local food prices, decrease productivity(生产效率) and increase the dependency on other countries. Farmers in Kenya hope the government can pay higher prices for their crops so that they can feed more Kenyans.

【1】What is the best title for this passage?

    A. Kenya Imports Food from Abroad

    B. World Food Program in Rome.

    C. The Poor Suffer from High Food Prices.

    D. A Report Published by Three UN Agencies.

【2】What do we know about Kenya from the passage?

    A. The people in central Kenya are suffering from hunger.

    B. At least three and a half million Kenyans lack food.

    C. The Kenyan government wants to improve road conditions.

    D. People in northern Kenya refuse to ask for food from overseas.

【3】What does “they” in the fourth paragraph refer to?

    A. The people of northern Kenya.

    B. Government officials.

    C. The farmers of central Kenya.

    D. Kenyan economists.

【4Which of the following statements is TRUE, according to this passage?

    A. Gregory Barrow suggests that Kenya make good use of overseas food.

    B. People in northern Kenya are suffering the drought less than the central.

    C. Economists believe importing food from abroad may cause problems.

    D. Kenyan government hopes to buy the native crops at higher prices.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、

    书面表达

    请阅读下面短文,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

Big or small, rejection affects us all. Harry Potter was rejected. So was The Twilight Saga. If authors J. K. Rowling and Stephenie Meyer hadn’t kept trying with publisher after publisher, we’d all have missed out on some great adventures.

Rejection doesn’t have to be about the big thing like not getting into your top college, not making the team, or not getting asked to the prom (舞会). Everyday situations can lead to the feeling of rejection, too, like if your joke doesn’t get a laugh, if no one remembers to save you a seat at the lunch table, or if the person you really like talks to everyone but you.

Feeling rejected is the opposite of feeling accepted. But being rejected (and we will all be at times) doesn’t mean someone isn’t liked, valued, or important. It just means that one time, in one situation, with one person, things didn’t work out.

Rejection hurts. But it’s impossible to avoid it altogether. In fact, you don’t want to— people who become too afraid of rejection might hold back from going after something they want. Sure, they avoid rejection, but they’re also 100% guaranteed to miss out on what they want but won’t try for.

    【写作内容】

    1. 以约30个词概括上文的主要内容。

    2. 以约120个词就“How to deal with rejection”这一话题发表你的看法,内容包括:

    (1) 讲述一次你被拒绝的经历; (2) 你当时的感受; (3) 你认为应该如何正确面对拒绝。

    【写作要求】

    作文中可以使用亲身经历或虚构的故事,也可以参照阅读材料的内容,但不得直接引用原文中的句子。

    【评分标准】

    概括准确,语言规范,内容合适,语篇连贯。
