二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Recently the barbican museum in London held an exhibition called the rain room. During the time this exhibition was open, my twitter stream was filled with photos of people standing in the rain room, accompanied by the caption “rain room@ the barbican!” and a location attachment to prove that they were indeed in the rain room.

This got me thinking. What were people actually saying by Tweeting about their visit? I think all they were doing was fulfilling the obligation that we have to share. Not sharing in the sense of treasuring a moment with people close to us, but sharing in the sense of “tell the world that I am doing a thing”.

It’s not sharing; it’s showing off. When we log in to Facebook or Twitter we see an infinitely updating stream of people enjoying themselves. It’s not real life, because people only post about the good things whereas all the dull or deep stuff doesn’t get mentioned. But despite this obvious fact, it subconsciously makes us feel like everyone is having a better time than us.

This is the curse of our age. We walk around with the tools to capture extensive data about our surroundings and transmit them in real-time to every friend we’ve made. We end up with a reduced understanding of reality because we’re more concerned about choosing a good Instagram filter(过滤器) for our meal than how it tastes.

I don’t think that it’s inherently wrong to want to keep the world updated about that you’re doing. But when you go through life robotically posting about everything you do, you’re not a human being. You’re just a prism that takes bits of light and sound and channels them into the cloud.

The key thing to remember is that you are not enriching your experiences by sharing them online; you are detracting from them because all your efforts are focused on making the look attractive to other people. Once you stop seeing things through the eyes of the people following you on Twitter or Facebook or Instagram, you can make your experiences significant, because you were there and you saw the sights and smelled the smells and heard the sounds, not snapped a photo of it through a half-inch camera lens.

【1】What do we learn from the first two paragraphs?

    A. Rain Room exhibition received a large audience in London.

    B. Most of people feel obligated to share their experience with friends.

    C. Many people want to inform others of their experience by Tweeting.

    D. All people having gone to the Rain Room took pictures.

【2】It seems to the author that ___________.

    A. Facebook or Twitter is a good place where we share personal experience

    B. people seldom show depressing stuff on the social networking websites

    C. most of people tend to show off that they are having a better time than others

    D. sharing experience on the social networking websites is not real life

【3】By talking of “a good Instagram filter for our meal” (Line 3-4, Para.4), the author wants to show _____________.

    A. we are surrounded by various tools to capture our daily data

    B. we are more concerned about how our life seems to be to others

    C. we transmit our experience immediately to everybody we know

    D. we gain more extensive perception of reality with digital tools

【4】What suggestion does the author give in the last paragraph?

    A. Enrich your experiences by sharing them online.

    B. Make efforts to make your life attractive to others.

    C. Stop showing your personal experience.

    D. Record the details of what you see, smell and hear.

  • 27、Protecting Yourself Against COVID-19

You’re probably really worried about the new COVID-19 coronavirus, especially if there are confirmed cases near you. Fortunately, you can take action to protect yourself and your family from the infection. 【1】

Stay away from people who are coughing or sneezing (喷嚏).

Since COVID-19 is a respiratory(呼吸) infection, coughing and sneezing are common symptoms (症状). 【2】  They may increase your risk of infection. Keep your distance from people who appear to have such symptoms.

Wash your hands with soap and water to reduce your infection risk.

The best way to prevent COVID-19 is to wash your hands as often as possible. Wet your hands with warm water, and then apply a little soap. Work the soap into lather (泡沫) for 20-30 seconds. 【3】 This is about how long it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song to yourself twice, so pretend you're celebrating someone's birthday.

Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.

【4】 When this happens, the virus can stay on your hands, so you can easily infect yourself if you touch your face with dirty hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth in case the virus is on your skin.

    【5】

Unfortunately, people who are infected with COVID-19 may spread the illness even if they aren’t showing symptoms. So avoid shaking hands with people to protect yourself.

  • 28、Faced with a declining population and shrinking workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robots for help. Over the years, the androids have been employed to perform a large number of human tasks, including building products and providing care and companionship for the elderly. The latest addition to the Japanese “workforce” may be Model-T. Designed by Telexistence Inc., this seven-foot-tall robot is currently undergoing trials restocking (补充货源) sandwiches, drinks, and ready meals on shelves at select locations of local convenience store chains Lawson and FamilyMart.

Telexistence has received funding from technology investment company Softbank Group and cell phone service operator KDDI in Japan, with overseas investors including European passenger aircraft maker Airbus Ventures. It named its robot Model-T, a nod to the Ford Motor car that began the age of mass motoring a century ago.

Compared with the warehouse robots being used by companies like Walmart and Amazon, which are only able to accomplish single, repetitive tasks, Model-T has a much wider range of movement and can be used to restock objects of various sizes, making it ideal for convenience and grocery stores.

“It is able to grasp or pick and place objects of several different shapes and sizes into different locations,” Matt Komatsu, head of business development and operations at Telexistence Inc., told CNN Business. However, Model-T is not autonomous. Instead, it is operated by human “pilots” wearing a virtual reality(VR) headset and special gloves, which allow them to feel the product the robot is holding in their hands and guide it to the right shelf. Since the video connection between the robot and the human operator has a mere 50 milliseconds delay, the navigation (导航) process is smooth. Telexistence says the VR-controlled androids areeasier to develop and maintain. They are also ten times cheaper than autonomous robots, which require complex programming

Though Model-T appears to have passed the trials, it is not quite ready to enter the labor force. Besides being a lot slower than human labour, it is also only capable of lifting packaged items, and cannot grasp loose items such as fruits and vegetables. Telexistence hopes to introduce a faster Model-T within the next two years.

【1】What is the main driving factor for the invention of Model-T?

    A.The demands of senior citizens.

    B.The development of technology.

    C.The shortage of labour force.

    D.The appeal of convenience stores.

【2】What’s the hidden message behind the name Model-T?

A.It is an updated version of Ford Motor.

B.It may create a new age like Ford Motor.

C.Its bond with Ford Motor is inseparable.

D.Its design is as fashionable as Ford Motor.

【3】What can we learn about Model-T according to Paragraph 4?

    A.It doesn’t need maintenance.

    B.It performs tasks automatically.

    C.It requires complex programming.

D.It depends largely on human’s operation.

【4】What does the last paragraph mainly discuss about Model-T?

    A.Its limitations.

    B.Its advantages.

    C.Its applications.

    D.Its functions.

To celebrate Fireman’s Day, a town’s special school for orphans(孤儿) held a special meet and greet with the local fire department. That year, the firemen had stopped a forest fire before it could reach houses and buildings.

The town’s firefighters came to the school dressed in uniform and answered all the kids’ questions. Captain Joshua was the department leader and explained each team member’s role. “Everybody has to be in the right place at the right time,” he explained to the children.

Captain Joshua suffered a noticeable burn mark above one of his eyes while fighting against the forest fire. A young boy named David approached Joshua, who noticed that the young boy had a birthmark in the same spot as his burn mark. David had another request for Joshua but was too shy to ask at first. David turned to his teacher, Mrs. Humphries, for approval, and she gave him a thumbs-up.

“Would it be all right if I came to the fire station to see all the equipment and look at the trucks?” David asked. The young boy explained that he dreamed of one day becoming a fireman, which was why he wanted to learn as much as possible. Mrs. Humphries told the captain, “The reason why David is so interested in firemen is that a dangerous fire took his parents from him at a young age.” Hearing this, Joshua decided that the trip would be beneficial for David and agreed to the tour.

That Saturday morning, Joshua showed Mrs. Humphries and David around the fire department. David was smiling from ear to ear. The three had hot dogs at the station. “I want to be a fireman to save many lives so that children don’t have to be sad. I want to be just like you when I grow up,” David said to Joshua before saying goodbye to him.
