26、During last Christmas holiday , my wife , our three boys and I were in France on our way from Paris to Nice . For five unpleasant days everything had gone wrong . Our hotels were tourist traps , our rented car broke down and we were all annoyed and exhausted in the crowded car . On Christmas Eve , when we checked into a dark and dirty hotel in Nice , there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts .
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat . We found a small restaurant roughly decorated for the holidays . In the corner , a piano player listlessly played Christmas music . I was too stubborn and too tired and miserable to leave .
I looked around and noticed that the other customers were eating in stony silence . The only person who seemed happy was the American sailor . While eating he was writing a letter , and a half-smile covered his face .
My wife ordered our meal in French . The waiter brought us the wrong thing , so I scolded my wife for being stupid . She began to cry . The boys defended her , and I felt even worse .
All of us were interrupted by an unpleasant blast of cold air . Through the front door came an old French flower woman , dressed in shabby clothes .
The young sailor finished his meal , got up and walked over to the flower woman . “ Happy Christmas ! ” he said , smiling , and picking out two corsages(胸花), and handed the woman a 20-franc note .
“ Only two francs , sir . ” she said .
Pressing one of the small corsages flat , he put it into an envelope he was to send . “ Ma’am , just keep the change . ” he said , leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek , “ This is my Christmas present to you . ” Straightening up , he came to our table holding the other corsage in front of him . “ Sir , ” he said to me , “ may I have permission to present this flower to your beautiful wife ? ” In one quick motion , he gave my wife the corsage , wished us a Merry Christmas , and left .
My wife waved her corsage in time to the music with a delighted smile .
Thanks to the sailor , it was he who released the love and joy that had been replaced within us by anger and disappointment . He gave us Christmas .

27、Australia’s koalas could be wiped out within 30 years unless urgent action is taken to stop the losing in population, according to researchers They say development, climate change and bushfires have all combined to reduce the number of wild koalas sharply. The Australian Koala Foundation said a recent survey showed the population could have dropped by more than half in the past six years. Previous estimates (估计) put the number of koalas at more than 100,000, but the latest calculations (计算) suggest there could now be as few as 43,000.
The foundation collected field data from 1,800 sites and 80,000 trees to calculate the numbers. In one area in northern Queensland estimated to have 20,000 koalas a decade ago, a team of eight people could not find a single animal in four days of searching.
The foundation said besides problems caused by cutting down forests, hotter and drier conditions because of global warming had reduced the nutritional (营养的) value of their staple food, eucalyptus leaves, leading to poor nutrition for them.
Koalas, which live in the forests in Australia’s east and south, are very fussy (爱挑剔的) about what types of the leaves they eat.
Foundation chief Deborah Tabart said: “The koalas are missing everywhere we look. It’s really no tree, no me. If you keep cutting down trees you don’t have any koalas.”
She is hoping the new figures will persuade the government’s Threatened Species Steering Committee (TSSC) to list the koala as threatened. But committee chairman Bob Beeton said a decision was not likely recently and the koala’s status as one of the country’s favourite animals would not be a factor. “There’s a number of species which are attractive and people have special feelings towards them. We don’t consider that,” Mr Beeton was reported as saying by the AFP agency.

A. koalas can hardly stand the hot weather
B. koalas cannot get enough water to drink
C. the leaves koalas eat are losing nutritional value
D. the leaves koalas eat cannot grow in hot weather
【3】According to Bob Beeton, _____.
A. koalas are his favourite animals
B. a decision will be made to protect koalas
C. they needn’t pay special attention to koalas
D. koalas needn’t be protected at all
28、If your family is thinking of getting a pet, consider adopting from an animal shelter. Animal shelters are full of dogs, cats, rabbits, and more animals, all in need of loving homes. Some may come with emotional or behavioral issues, but most are happy, healthy, and ready for a loving home. Here are some tips for you to find great animals.
Make some decision.
Think about what you want in a pet and remember that all pets have different personalities. Cats tend to be more independent and need less affection, but kittens need lots of attention. Cats don’t need to be walked , but you need to clip their nails and play with them. Dogs need to be walked at the very least twice a day. However , they are usually great companions and love to spend time with their family.
Visit the shelter.
Set aside at least a few hours to visit shelters in your area—remember that you may need to visit more than one visit. Try to bring along everyone who will be living with a new pet. Ask the shelter staff lots of questions. And never adopt an animal because you feel sorry for it—be patient so you find a pet who is truly a good match for your family.
Get everything ready.
Buy all necessary supplies and food well before the animal comes home. Make sure that the entire household is in agreement about rules and responsibilities—will the dog be allowed on the couch? Who will clean the litter box? Put it in writing before the pet arrives.
Bring your new friend home !
You’ll probably be excited when your new pet arrives, but be sure to give them space and time to get adjusted to a new home and a new family. The pet may act differently once they leave the shelter. Interact(交流)with your pet a lot and get them used to a routine, and soon you’ll be one big happy family !
【1】Which of the following is the first important factor should be considered when adopting a pet?

D. Try to make the pet your family member.

C. bring all the members to visit the shelter
D. get it adjusted to a new environment immediately
【4】The article is intended for ______.
A. animal shelters B. shelter staff
C. pet lovers D. pet protectors
29、Booking a trip on an online travel site is convenient, but comes with its own set of problems.
◆They know who's going to spend more.
Last year, US travel research company Orbitz tracked people's online activities to test out whether Mac users spend more on travel than PC users. It turns out that on average, Mac users lay out US $20-30 more per night on hotels. As a result, online travel sites show these users more expensive travel options first. To avoid paying more, sort results by price.
◆Their software doesn't always link to the hotel's system.
A guaranteed reservation is almost impossible to come by anywhere — but the risk of your flight or hotel being overbooked increases with third-party providers. The middleman's software isn't immune(防护作用的) to system errors, so always call the hotel or airline to make sure your booking was processed.
◆Don't be fooled by packages: Often, they're low-end items grouped together.
Ever notice how travel sites recommend a hotel, a rental car, and tour package all in one click? These deals usually feature travel that no one wants, like flights with multiple layovers(中途停留). Check the fine print.
◆Once your trip is purchased, you're on your own.
An online travel agency can't provide assistance the same way an agent can if a flight is cancelled or a room is substandard. Basically, when you arrive at the airport or hotel, you're just another customer who booked at the lowest rate.
【1】What does the writer mainly intend to tell readers?
A. Steps of reserving a hotel on line
B. Tips of how to reserve flights on line
C. Problems about reserving a trip on line
D. Traps in reserving hotels and flights on line
【2】Why do people probably spend more on their online reservation for trips?
A. They are shown less expensive travel options first
B. Some of the travel expenses are earned by Mac users
C. They book at prices recommended first by travel sites.
D. Their flights or hotels are overbooked by tourist agencies
【3】What can we lean from the passage?
A. Booking online is better than booking in other ways
B. The third parties will provide good travel services on line
C. Few people book trips on line because of possible troubles
D. Travelers’ interests may not be guaranteed with booking on line.
