26、 Lynn Colwell is a mixed-media artist in Redmond, Washington. In grade school, a teacher told her that she had no artistic talent and Lynn believed her. However, in 2015 when she retired, she hoped to have a new interest and began to take year-long online painting class.
"It blew me away," she says. She started painting striking portraits of women's faces, combined with short messages of hope almost every day. In five years, she's completed about 1,000 paintings.
Lynn gives her paintings away. She started with friends, but that only went so far. Then she read about a movement called Art Abandonment, which encourages artists to leave their art in public places for anyone to pick up. That gave her the idea of putting her work into the hands of strangers through Facebook.
Nearly every day, Lynn posts a painting on her Facebook page. The first person who responds saying they're interested in it has 24 hours to make a donation of $ 25 or more to their favorite nonprofit or an individual in need. Then the painting is theirs. Lynn doesn't' ask for proof(证明). She trusts that the people who want her paintings share her ideas.
Five years later, she's still amazed at the results. Her paintings have raised more than $ 57,000 for nonprofits such as animal rescue centers, homeless shelters as well as for people who have lost their jobs. Sometimes Lynn hears that a painting helped someone at the moment they needed it most. "That give me chills," she says.
To be a part of Lynn Colwell's art-for-a-cause effort, send her a friend request at facebook.com/lynncolwell. Then keep an eye out for a painting that speaks to you. Lynn personally approves each request, so she asks for your patience. Also, she spends most of her time in her art studio-there's painting to be done. "I wake up every day and can't wait to get started," she says.

27、 It doesn’t matter if books are delivered in print or by smart phone; the main thing is to get lost in reading them. Reading books is vital for human development.
Why should we bother reading a book? All children say this occasionally. Many of the 12 million adults in Britain with reading difficulties repeat it to themselves daily. In a world of advanced technology, increasing time poverty and decreasing attention should they invest precious time sinking into a good book?
The discovery that our brains are physically changed by the experience of reading is something many of us will understand instinctively, as we think back to the way an extraordinary book had a transformative effect on the way we viewed the world. This transformation only takes place when we lose ourselves in a book, abandoning the emotional and mental chatter of the real world. That’s why studies have found this kind of deep reading makes us more sensitive to the inner lives of others.
Reasoningly, we know that reading is the foundation stone of all education, and therefore an essential basis of the knowledge economy. So reading is - or should be - an aspect of public policy. But perhaps even more significant is its emotional role as the starting point for individual voyages of personal development and pleasure. Books can open up emotional, imaginative and historical landscapes that equal and extend the corridors of the web. They can help create and strengthen our sense of self. If reading were to decline significantly, it would change the very nature of our species. However, technology throws up as many solutions as it does challenges: for every door it closes, another opens. So the ability, offered by devices like e-readers, smart phones and tables, to carry an entire library in your hand is an amazing opportunity. Publishers need to use every new piece of technology to embed (嵌入) long-form reading within our culture

【3】When will the transformative effect of reading happen?
A.When we forget ourselves.
B.When the real world doesn’t matter to us.
C.When books open up a new landscape to us.
D.When we are buried in deep reading.
【4】Why should reading be an aspect of public policy?
A.Because otherwise no one bothers to read.
B.Because reading can bring economic benefit indirectly.
C.Because reading is the starting point of individual voyage.
D.Because books are the extension of the web.
28、Dolphins call out the specific names of loved ones when they become separated, a study finds.Other than humans, they are the only animals known to do this, according to the study. The big difference with dolphins is that these communications consist of whistles(鸣叫), not words.
Earlier research found that dolphins have a “signature whistle” that would be somewhat like human shouting, “Hey everybody! I’m an adult healthy male named George, and I mean you no harm.”
The new finding is that dolphins also say the names of certain other dolphins.“Animals produced copies of the same sound when they were separated from a close partner. This supports our belief that dolphins copy another animal’s signature whistle when they want to reunite with that animal,” Stephanie King, who led the study, says.
King and her colleagues collected acoustic(声音的)data from wild dolphins around Sarasota Bay, Florida, from 1984 to 2009.The researchers also studied four adult male dolphins housed at the Seas Aquarium, also in Florida.
Those males are adults that keepers named Calvin, Khyber, Malabar and Ranier, all of whom, as well as all of the wild ones, developed their own signature whistles that served as names in communication with other dolphins.
“A dolphin uses its signature whistle to broadcast its identity and announce its presence. The signature whistles allow animals to identify one another over long distances and allow animals to recognize one another and to join up with each other,” King explains.“Dolphin whistles can be heard up to 20km away, depending on water depth and whistle frequency(频率).”
The researchers said dolphins copy the signature whistles of loved ones, such as a mother, when the two are separated. These “names” are always used in positive situations, and are only directed toward loved ones.
While researchers are often unwilling to apply the word language to non-human communications, dolphins clearly have a very complex communication system.

29、Jellyfish (水母) are badly named. They are neither a fish nor made of jelly. Instead, their bodies are made up of 95% water and 5% solid matter. They have been in existence for at least half a billion years. Therefore, they are older than dinosaurs. Surprisingly, they don’t have a brain, a heart, or lungs. You may wonder how they can possibly survive without these vital organs, but everything is for the best. They don’t have lungs because their skin is so thin that they can absorb oxygen through it. They don’t need a heart to pump blood because they don’t have any. And they have a nerve net — which is sensitive to touch — below their outer skin. They respond to the changes in their environment using signals from the nerve net, so they don’t need a brain to process complex thoughts.
Their variety is nearly endless. Most of them are umbrella-shaped and have tentacles (触角). Some jellyfish have very long tentacles. However, they never get tangled (缠结) up or sting (蜇) themselves. That’s because the tentacles are very slippery and will only sting other animals. Most jellyfish have little or no vision, but they can discover light and ocean currents, which helps them to find their way and move. A few species can also recognize color and have a 360-degree view of their environment.
Jellyfish come in all sizes, from 0.5 millimeters to the giant Nomura’s jellyfish, which can measure up to two meters in diameter and weigh over 200 kilograms. While jellyfish are beautiful, they can also be dangerous. Some jellyfish toxins (毒素) can be deadly to humans, such as those from the box jellyfish and the Australian Irukandji, but deaths are relatively rare given the number of jellyfish-sting victims every year. In any case, it’s better to stay out of the way of any jellyfish you may see! You can go swimming with dolphins, but you definitely want to think twice before swimming with jellyfish.
【1】What does “everything is for the best ” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Ocean creatures without vital organs don’t lie long.
B.Jellyfish live just fine with what they naturally have.
C.Jellyfish live in the ocean because everything is suitable.
D.The numerous ocean species make life pretty easy for jellyfish.
【2】How long have jellyfish lived on our planet?
A.More than 500,000,000 years.
B.At least 5,000,000,000 years.
C.Roughly 50,000,000 years.
D.Less than 5,000,000 years.
【3】Which of the following topics about jellyfish is NOT mentioned in the text?
