二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、OSLO ( Reuters) -Six of the world's eight bear species are under threat of extinction after the addition yesterday of the sun bear, the world's smallest type of bear, to a "Red List" which says China's panda is most at risk. The sun bear is threatened partly by poachers(偷猎者)  who sell its bile(胆汁)as medicine, said the World Conservation Union which runs the list of the threatened wildlife.

"Things are getting worse for all the bear species except the American black bear which is unquestionably increasing," said Simon Smart, senior species adviser for the Union.

The addition of the sun bear to the authoritative "Red List" after a major review means the American black bear and the brown bear, found from Europe to Alaska, are the only two of eight species still considered robust(强的) .  The sun bear, found in Asia from Bangladesh to Borneo and weighing up to about 70kg, was rated "vulnerable(脆弱的) " by experts at the Union, which consists of more than 80 governments, conservation groups and scientists. The union said there were several thousand sun bears in the wild. "We estimate that sun bears have declined by at least 30 percent over the past 30 years, and continue to decline at this speed," said Ron Steinmetz, head of the Swiss- based Union's sun bear expert team.

Scientists did not change the level of threat to any bear species (except sun bears). Deforestation, loss of habitat to roads and cities and poaching are among risks. The Asian black bear, the sloth bear and the Andean bear were all proved again as vulnerable after reassessment of land-living bears.  The polar, the only species not reassessed, is separately rated as vulnerable. Pandas were regarded again as endangered, one step closer to extinction than vulnerable, in spite of China's protection efforts for the bamboo-eaters.

【1】How many kinds of threats are particularly mentioned to bear species?

    A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.

    2According to the text, pandas.

    A. are in the greatest danger of extinction on the "Red List"

    B. are in less danger of extinction now with the China's protection efforts

    C. are one step closer to extinction than ever before

    D. are not among the 8 bears mentioned in the text

3We can infer from the text that .

    A. the World Conservation Union is not in charge of protecting wildlife in the world

    B. pandas are rated as endangered after the reassessment

    C. there are several kinds of land-living bears in the world

    D. sun bears remain " vulnerable ", compared with 30 years ago

  • 27、The health of millions could be at risk because supplies of medicinal plants are being used up. These plants are used to make traditional medicine, including drugs to fight cancer. “The loss of medicinal plants is a quiet disaster,” says Sara Oldfield, secretary general of the NGO Botanic Gardens Conservation International.

Most people worldwide rely on herbal (药草的) medicines which are got mostly from wild plants. But some 15,000 of the 50,000 medicinal species are under threat of dying out, according to a report from the international conservation group Plantlife. Shortages have been reported in China, India, Kenya, Nepal, Tanzania and Uganda.

Over-harvesting does the most harm, though pollution and competition from invasive species (入侵物种) and habitat destruction all contribute. “Businessmen generally harvest medicinal plants, not caring about sustainability (可持续性),” the Plantlife report says, “Damage is serious partly because they have no idea about it, but it is mainly because such collection is unorganized.” Medicinal trees at risk include the Himalayan yew and the African cherry, which are used to treat some cancers.

The solution, says the report’s author, Alan Hamilton, is to encourage local people to protect these plants. Ten projects ran by Plantlife in India, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Uganda and Kenya showed this method can succeed. In Uganda, the project has kept a sustainable supply of low-cost cancer treatments, and in China a public-run medicinal plant project has been created for the first time.

“Improving health, earning an income and keeping cultural traditions are important in encouraging people to protect medicinal plants,” says Hamilton, “You have to pay attention to what people are interested in.”

Ghillean Prance, the former director of the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, agrees that medicinal plants are in need of protection. “Not nearly enough is being done. We are destroying the very plants that are of most use to us.”

【1】From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that ________.

  • 28、When we look at a lovely baby, a puppy or a really cute kitten many of us want to squeeze it. Why is that?

According to a study published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, it’s a typical experience of “cute aggression”. The experience results from the fight between the brain’s “emotion system”, which impels (驱使) people to squeeze cute things, and its “reward system” which deals with feelings of “wanting”.

In the study, 54 participants between the ages of 18 and 40 were presented with four groups of photos. Two of the groups of photos were of cute human babies and animals and the other two were of less adorable adult humans and animals. As the participants looked at the photos, there searchers watched their brain activities.

According to the researchers, the participants reward systems were found to be active as they looked at the cute babies, and they seemed to be overwhelmed(征服的). By contrast, the reward systems of the people looking at the less cute adults were found to be inactive, and they seemed to be less impelled by their reward systems.

This suggests that cute things activate their emotion systems in such a way that people are overwhelmed by the experience of cuteness. But reward systems work against these emotions by creating the desire to protect cute things.

As Katherine Stavropoulos, the lead researcher of this study at the University of California in the US told Science Alert, “The cute aggression is the brain’s way of ‘bringing us back down’ by balancing our feelings of being overwhelmed.”

Stavropoulos compared this process of balancing to an evolutionary adaptation. Such an adaptation may have taken place to ensure that people are able to continue taking care of creatures they consider particularly cute.

So, although cute babies and adorable animals may look completely helpless, their vulnerable( 易受伤害的) appearance may in fact help them to survive.

【1】According to the text, “cute aggression” refers to .

A.the emotion of wanting to protect cute things

B.the task of emotion system and reward system

C.the adaptation of consistently taking care of cute creatures

D.the behavior of squeezing a cute baby or animal when seeing it

【2】In nature, “cute aggression” is caused by .

A.the need of the brain to balance all feelings

B.the photos of cute human babies and animals

C.the vulnerable appearance of babies or animals

D.the conflict between emotion system and reward system

【3】Which of the following statements about the study is TRUE?

A.Facial expressions of the participants were observed.

B.Katherine Stavropoulos conducted this study on her own.

C.Cute babies and animals affected brain activities of all the participants.

D.The participants were divided into two groups in order to make comparison.

【4】What is the author's purpose in writing this text?

A.To persuade readers to protect cute animals.

B.To stress the significance of cute aggression.

C.To present research findings on cute aggression.

D.To share an interesting phenomenon with readers

  • 29、You’ve probably heard about sports coaches, fitness coaches, voice and music teachers, career counselors(咨询 psychiatrists (精神科医师) and other specialists who teach skills and help us cope with daily life.

But there’s a rapidly growing kind of professionals who do a little bit of everything. She or he is called a life coach”. People who are at the crossroads in their life, and corporations that want to give certain employees a career boost , are turning to them for help.

The idea that one person’s success story can change other people’s life for the better goes back at least to the 1930s. Dale Carneigie’s famous self-improvement program How to Win Friends and Influence People” came along soon thereafter.

But this new style of life coaches includes more than enthusiastic speakers or writers. They use their own experiences in business, sports, military service, or psychotherapy (心理疗法) to help others make critical life decisions. They often give their approaches a slogan, such as “energy coaching” or “fearless living” or “working yourself happy”.

Dave Lakhani in Boise, Idaho, for instance, works with salespeople to develop what he calls a “road map”. He says an ongoing relationship with a coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for one’s career and life outside work.

Lakhani’s Bold Approach coaching firm also donates some of its time to help people who are anything but successful---including battered (殴打) women and struggling single mothers.

But others in the so-called “helping professions” are not thrilled about the life-coaching movement. They say that anyone, trained or untrained, can call himself or herself a life coach, and that slick(华而不实的) promoters who mess with people’s lives can do more harm than good.

【1】Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

    A. Working Yourself Happy.

    B. How to Cope with Daily Life with Life Coaches.

    C. Life Coaches Help with Tough Decisions.

    D. The Life-Coaching Movement.

2 What is a “life coach”?

    A. A career counselor who teaches skills.

    B. A psychiatrist who helps us deal with daily life.

    C. A fitness coach who teaches us lessons.

    D. A specialist who helps us make important life decisions.

3The last paragraph is mainly about__________.

    A. the introductions of life coaches

    B. the disagreements of life coaches

    C. the effects of life coaches

    D. the experiences of life coaches

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passages by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

As dusk falls at the Lehua Night Market, the fluorescent (荧光的) lights flicker on and the hungry customers start trickling in, anxious for a taste of the local delicacies that give this island its reputation as one of Asia’s finest cookery 1 .

Nearly arranged pyramids of plump fish balls, bowls filled with tapioca balls 2  in lightly sweetened sauce, sizzling oyster omelets, hot off the griddle, deep-fried sweet potato puffs (冒热气), still 3 with oil. Take a bite of any of these dishes and you’ll discover a unique texture. But how exactly do you 4 that perfect “mouth feel” so sought after by local cooks and eaters alike? Slippery? Chewy? Not exactly.

Luckily, the people in Taiwan have a word for this texture. Well, actually, it’s not a word, it’s a letter—one that even non-Chinese speakers can pronounce.

It’s “Q.” Basically, it means springy, soft, elastic.

Andre Chiang, a Michelin-star chef and owner of RAW in Taipei, said he has been 5 with the texture at his restaurant, which uses only local materials. “It’s like aldente (筋道) but not quite,” Mr. Chiang said.

Q is so well 6 in Taiwan that many in Hong Kong and across the Taiwan Strait in mainland China use the term as well.

There are many other uses for the term Q in Chinese as well. It could be used, for example, as short form for the English word “7”, or to refer to the once-popular QQ messaging service from Tencent.

Among the local people, the 8 for Q texture starts at a young age. On a recent sticky evening at the Lehua Night Market, a group of people gathered at stand with a sign that 9 “QQ ice lolly.” Asked why Q texture was so 10 to Taiwanese, Lu Wei-chen, the owner of the stand, smiled as she handed a bright red jelly bar to a delighted toddler.

“It’s simple,” she said. “When you eat it, you will be in a good mood.”
