二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、As the weather cools across the United States, a growing number of Americans visit farms. They harvest apples, enjoy hay wagon rides and walk in the fields. These people are called agri-tourists. They improve the economy of rural areas and help local farmers increase their profits. It is reported that Americnas spent more than $700 million on the agri-tourism activity in the United States last year.

On Mike Dunn’s farm, school children are laughing and playing. They come to have a hands-on experience of what it’s like to be on a farm. In a corn field maze, the corn is cut into tricky passageways that make it hard to find a way out. Their teacher says they come around once a year.

When Mike Dunn opened the family farm to agri-touists, he had only a corn maze, a pumpkin field and hay wagon rides. The number of visitors to his farm doubles every year and there are 250 people at weekends on average. He says so many people visited that he soon increased the number of activities in which people can take part. The agri-tourism earnings might be 30 percent of the entire farm income. He hopes he will make a larger profit form visitors than from farming someday.

In Loudoun County, Virginia, there are farms where grapes are grown for use in making wine. Many of the farms let people visit and drink the wine that is make there . Malcolm Baldwin owns a vineyard in Loudoun County. Last year, he began letting people get married on his farm. The wedding business attracts an increasing number of people. It’s the best choice for the young couple to spend the big day. They can also stay overnight. Mr Baldwin says the money he makes from these activities lets him keep his small farm operating.

1What can we learn about the agri-tourism activity in America?

    A. It is available throughout the year.

    B. It is for Americans to help farmers grow crops.

    C. It brings a lot of trouble to the local environment.

    D. It has a good effect on the development of rural areas.

2Why did Mike Dunn add more activities for agri-tourism?

    A. because he earned little money from farming.

    B. Because people were losing interest in previous activities.

    C. Because more and more tourists visited his farm.

    D. Because agri-tourism was the only source of his income.

3What’s the most attractive activity in Mr. Baldwin’s vineyard?

    A. Making wine.   B. Tasting wine.

    C. Sleeping for the night.   D. Holding wedding ceremonies.

4What’s the best title for the text?

    A. The new way for Americans to travel

    B. How to make money from agri-tourism

    C. Agri-tourism is popular with Americans.

    D. Go to the family farms to enjoy yourself.

  • 27、Every now and then you may hear news of satellites sent into space. On Feb 21, for example, US company SpaceX took 46 satellites into orbit. On Feb 27, China sent 22 satellites into space. Why do we need so many satellites? What do they do for us?

At present, there are more than 3,000 active satellites moving around the Earth, according to Statista, a German company that works on market data. Satellites have all kinds of roles, from transmitting TV signals, giving you directions on the road, to helping scientists with their research.

For example, the 22 satellites China just sent up are part of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System. Shared bikes that use BeiDou chips (芯片) can provide more accurate positioning, making them easier to find. Drones (无人机) can also use BeiDou while flying. Before satellites, TV signals didn’t reach very far. Mountains or tall buildings would block the signals. Phone calls to faraway places were also a problem. Setting up telephone wires over long distances is difficult. With satellites, TV signals and phone calls can be sent directly to a satellite and back down to different locations on Earth. SpaceX’s Starlink project is trying to go further. It plans to use satellites to provide people with internet all over the globe.

Satellites can also provide information about clouds, oceans, land and ice. They help scientists predict changes in weather and climate. By monitoring wildfires and volcanoes, satellites help emergency workers deal with natural disasters. Farmers can use satellite images to decide the best time to water their fields. Some satellites fly near other planets. They may look for water on Mars or take close-up pictures of Saturn’s rings (土星环). In 2020, video website Bilibili sent a satellite into space. Its job is to look at other planets and share the pictures and videos with Bilibili’s users.

  • 28、The British may be made fun of for their weather-related small talk, but a recent study suggests that just four minutes of chatting can reveal aspects of our personality and influence subsequent social interactions.

Researchers divided 338 participants into two groups before meeting in person and asked each participant to complete a personality and IQ test. Within each group, participants were paired and either conversed by text for 4 minutes or had no contact with their partner. Participants were then required to infer aspects of their partner’s personality and predict whether they would act cooperatively or selfishly in two money-based strategy games.

The results showed that those who chatted scored higher in predicting their partners’ IQ and personality test responses, but were also more likely to project their own personality characteristics on to their partners. “Our research suggests that in just a few minutes of small talk, we begin to form a mental model of the person we’re talking to,” says Professor Sgroi.

Participants then met and played with their conversation partner or, in the case of the no-contact group, met and played with strangers.

The researchers then gave each participant £20 and asked them to contribute to a joint pot (罐) shared with their partners, an experiment called the Public Goods Game.

The team says people who have chatted with their partners are more likely to correctly predict their contributions to the pot. In addition, those who chatted beforehand contributed 30% more than those who did not. The results also depended on the relationships they established through small talk.

Georgie Nightingall, founder of Trigger Conversations, says that small talk is a great way to encourage cooperation in the workplace. “People are bad at small talk because it feels like there is no end to it. It can feel awkward and pointless once you have all the information you need. While asking questions helps build relationships with people, people will be happy to have a chat if you show that you care about others. My advice is to be sincere (真诚) and considerate.”

  • 29、Popular culture has a strong influence on language. Expressions that come from movies and television shows can be especially powerful.

When we use expressions that come from a movie or television shared by others, it can create a feeling of closeness with them. If someone says a line(台词) from one of your favorite movies, it is kind of like you both belong to the same club.

English has many such phrases that have found their way into common usage. Today we talk about a water-based phrase and useful adjectives that relate to it.

In the movie Finding Nemo, Dory is a friendly, helpful, optimistic fish. She becomes friends with Marlin, a clown fish who has just lost his only son. Dory offers to help Marlin find Nemo. The search is very difficult. Along the way, they face bloodthirsty sharks.

Every time Marlin feels like giving up, Dory says, “Just keep swimming. Just keep swimming.” With these words, Dory is telling her friend that he should not give up.

At some point, we all face a difficult situation. We may feel frightened, sad or just overwhelmed. And we may want to give up. But then a friend says, “Just keep swimming,” and it gives us the hope we need to reach our goal.

Another expression, to keep your head above water, expresses a similar message. Don’t drown. Take action to survive, even if that is all you can do.

English has some great adjectives to describe people and things that do not give up. One is resilient. Resilient people do not give up in the face of adversity (逆境). "Resilient" can refer to things, also. For example, a tree that keeps growing even after lightning strikes it could be called a resilient tree. Another adjective to describe someone who will not give up is indefatigable. So, would I say “just keep swimming” in a very serious situation or to a very serious co-worker who I don’t know well? Probably not. But we have other words of encouragement. You can say “Hang in there!” or “Don’t give up!” When we use expressions or phrases from movies or television shows, it is a way of sharing culture with another.

【1】By saying “you both belong to the same club”, the author probably means________

A.you like the same sports activity

    B.you hold the same belief

    C.you own the same teammates

    D.you have the same taste

【2】According to the passage, when we say of the following, which is NOT proper?

A.a flower which lives through the freezing winter: it is resilient

B.a new and serious colleague who wants to give up: just keep swimming

C.a friend who is overwhelmed: hang in there

    D.a co-worker who is strong-willed: you’re indefatigable

【3】This passage mainly tells us about________

A.expressions from movies and television shows

B.influences of popular culture on language

C.ways to encourage people in difficult situations

D.words and phrases to express “do not give up”

The event that stands out in Tom’s memory happened one morning when Tom was only ten years old.He was at home with his elder sister Jane.Tom was doing his homework when he heard raised voices. At first he thought nothing of it since customers in the motorcycle shop directly below their flat often became loud, but he soon realized this time it was different.

“Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop.” someone shouted. Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to investigate,a thick cloud of smoke greeted him.The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.

They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped in her track. She turned around and headed back the way they came.Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Makcik.Jane began banging on Makcik’s door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them,Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pajamas (睡衣)—running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

“She would have run for safety like everyone else!” Tom cried. However,Jane refused to give up.“I know Makcik’s still inside.” She said she was familiar with Makcik’s daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door.“Go downstairs.Go now! Go!”
