26、Most of us control our technology using our fingers and hands. But for years, people with disabilities have used their eyes as a way to control digital interfaces (界面). Some tablets give disabled people the ability to use the Internet, communicate and even play games using just their eyes as a mouse.
Now, researchers are experimenting with ways to bring eye-tracking technology to general users. At a conference last week scholars presented two new methods for able-bodied people to take advantage of a user interface that has mostly stayed within the field of assistive technology.
One of the most annoying things about writing is mistakes. Researchers at the university of Auckland and the university of Bath suggest using your gaze (凝视) to fix those little mistakes. First, you look at the wrong word you want to fix. Then you start typing the program called Re-Type, identifies the word you’re trying to change based on your gaze and replaces it with whatever you type. Then you just have to press ENTER to continue. It turns your eyeballs into a mouse. The research team has patented Re-Type and wants to turn it into a product.
It has been found that developers spend about 35% of their time looking through their code while they’re working. When they’re removing mistakes from a computer program, they spend about 50% of their time looking for information—something that slows them down greatly. To solve this problem, Weber and his workmates at media design school in New Zealand and the University of Bath used eye-gaze technology to look into whether using their eyes would save developers’ time. The researchers found that relying on one’s gaze was similar in speed to using a keyboard, though it was slower than using a mouse. However, they also found that when given the choice, most developers chose to use their gaze.
Both studies show that eye tracking could be used to increase productivity and one’s gaze could become a compliment (补充物) to the mouse or even replace it altogether.

27、Huang Danian, the well-known Chinese geophysicist, was born in 1958 in Guangxi, China. As a keen and able student, Huang went to the UK in 1993 to further his studies.
By the time Huang moved back to China in 2009, he had been living and working in the UK for many years. He had a good job and a life there, but he gave it all up to return to home driven by the idea that he needed to contribute to his country. As one of the world’s leading experts in deep-Earth exploration technology, Huang was invited to participate in the “Thousand Talent” programme. He took up a position at Jilin University, Changchun.
Huang was named lead scientist of a branch of China’s largest deep-Earth exploration programme, developing advanced cameras that can see through the Earth’s crust (地壳) so that it can be analysed without having to dig into it. He set up an advanced lab, sometimes paying for equipment with his own money. Some described him as a “lunatic”, but this passion and drive enabled Huang to push forwards China’s deep-Earth exploration technology into a world-leading position. Huang’s devotion contributed to China’s lunar probe (月球探测器) Chang’e 3 being landed on the moon in 2013 and the launch of the spacecraft Shenzhou-11 and Tiangong-2 in 2016.
Huang’s health also paid the price for his commitment to his work. He began having fits (昏厥) in 2012, but paid little attention to them, stating he did not have time to go to see a doctor—his work always came first. In November 2016, Huang fainted and was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with cancer. The disease was so advanced that he had just a couple of months to live.
Huang never gave up, and always tried to push forwards. Even from his hospital bed, he continued his work, writing references for his colleagues and replying to questions from his students. Huang died in January 2017, aged just 58. More than 800 people attended his funeral to celebrate a life that burned so bright, but was so short.

28、As the weather cools across the United States, a growing number of Americans visit farms. They harvest apples, enjoy hay wagon rides and walk in the fields. These people are called agri-tourists. They improve the economy of rural areas and help local farmers increase their profits. It is reported that Americnas spent more than $700 million on the agri-tourism activity in the United States last year.
On Mike Dunn’s farm, school children are laughing and playing. They come to have a hands-on experience of what it’s like to be on a farm. In a corn field maze, the corn is cut into tricky passageways that make it hard to find a way out. Their teacher says they come around once a year.
When Mike Dunn opened the family farm to agri-touists, he had only a corn maze, a pumpkin field and hay wagon rides. The number of visitors to his farm doubles every year and there are 250 people at weekends on average. He says so many people visited that he soon increased the number of activities in which people can take part. The agri-tourism earnings might be 30 percent of the entire farm income. He hopes he will make a larger profit form visitors than from farming someday.
In Loudoun County, Virginia, there are farms where grapes are grown for use in making wine. Many of the farms let people visit and drink the wine that is make there . Malcolm Baldwin owns a vineyard in Loudoun County. Last year, he began letting people get married on his farm. The wedding business attracts an increasing number of people. It’s the best choice for the young couple to spend the big day. They can also stay overnight. Mr Baldwin says the money he makes from these activities lets him keep his small farm operating.

29、We all need friends and we always have. Our ancestors found that gaining the basic necessities of life was easier in a group. It’s estimated that the maximum number of people who lived in early communities of hunter-gatherers was 150.
Friends aren’t bound(受……限制)by blood or family bonds, employment contracts or legal obligations. Our circle of associates includes work colleagues and people we meet at parties, in the pub or on the train to work. Some associates are much more important than our family. We are capable of exchanging an email with these associates, and may have mutual acquaintances with a good number of them, providing common ground. We do things for one another because we want to.Whether writing an answer to a photo put on Facebook, sending a birthday card by post, or making a hospital visit, the efforts we have made for our friends are out of kindness. It is this nature of friendship which requires nothing in return that makes it beneficial and valuable.
Friendships take work, and they need to be nurtured, nourished and maintained. We feel good about helping our friends because we are friends. However, we often lose touch with our friends because of a lack of time and energy. When we are carrying a heavy load at work, involved in a serious relationship or raising children, it’s hard to spare time for friends. In these situations, we need to remind ourselves of what friends are for and why they can be so important in our lives.
In a survey of more than 2,000 married couples aged 55 or older, for both men and women, having friends was the best predictor of being satisfied in marriage — possibly because they were more satisfied with their lives as a result of having friends.
Researchers suggest social relationships are the reason why women live longer than men, Social bonds reduce the risk of disease by reducing blood pressure, cholesterol(胆固醇)and heart rate.A lack of good friends is as harmful to your health as smoking or being overweight.Indeed, people without friends are more likely to die younger. Not only do friendships prolong(延长)our lives, they make us happier too.People who are socially active don’t feel so stressed or feel they can not enjoy anything easily — they also tend to feel better about their lives and who they are.
【1】What makes friendship beneficial and valuable?
A. Its being not bound by blood or family bonds.
B. Its being easy to maintain.
