二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、On a cold and clear day in February, Wes, his brother Jeff, his assistant Jordan, and I were following the GPS from the bear’s collar( 项 圈 ) up a steep and into a red earth canyon. The temperature dropped to zero as we cleaned the snow, trying to locate the black bear’s entrance.

The radio signal was so weak that as the sun set, we considered turning back. Then a curtain of snow collapsed, revealing a sandstone cave. It narrowed to a dark tunnel, and the musky(麝香味)smell of wild animal steamed from within. Wes didn’t hesitate. Armed with an expandable six-foot stick with a tranquilizer syringe(镇定剂喷射器) on its tip, he dived in headfirst. His brother crawled after him.

Thirty seconds later, they came flying backward out of the tunnel. The bear they’d collared a year and a half ago now weighed about 350 pounds— and he was awake! Wes had managed to jab him with the syringe, so we waited for the drug to take effect. But when we rounded the tunnel bend, wide eyes flashed at us. He was STILL awake!! Wes told me not to move while he backed out and jabbed another dose of tranquilizer.

The bear started crawling toward us. We desperately blocked the exit with backpacks and sticks as Wes jabbed him again— but he powered through our barriers with groggy(头晕眼花的) steps and began to crawl down the snowy slope. Jeff and Jordan held his back paws, managing     to hold on to him; Wes jumped on his back and grabbed his collar. The bear pulled them down   the hillside together. The tranquilizer had taken effect— he was asleep. Wes and his brother changed the batteries of the collar and checked his health, but we had one more difficult task: getting a 350-pound bear up the snowy path and safely back to his cave before he awoke. We pushed and pulled with every muscle. Before the drug wore off, our effort paid off.

When spring came, signals from the bear’s new radio collar showed he’d continued his everyday life—avoiding any more contact, we hope, with humans.

【1】Why did the author and his friends go to the canyon?

A.They wanted to conduct a radio experiment.

B.They expected to hunt for a bear for fun.

C.They wished to explore the nature in winter.

D.They planned to maintain the bear’s radio collar.

【2】How did they find the bear they had collared?

A.The bear’s unique smell reminded them.

B.A hunter led them to the bear’s habitat.

C.The strong sunlight revealed its cave.

D.A curtain of snow showed them the way.

【3】What does the underlined word “jab” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Kick.

    B.Inject.

    C.Cure.

    D.Assist.

【4】What can we learn from paragraph 3 and 4?

A.The bear was more than pleased to see them again.

B.The drug took effect immediately after the bear took it.

C.They made it to send the bear back to its cave.

D.They gave the bear tranquilizer 4 times in the end.

【5】The best title for the text is ________.

    A.The Bear Wearing a Collar

    B.Danger in Nature

    C.An Encounter with a Bear

    D.A “Little” Adventure

  • 22、A perfumer is responsible for designing and composing perfumes and other fragrance compositions. To become a perfumer, it is important to follow a recognized training at a perfume school. The training to become a perfumer will generally take at least ten years. At the end of the training, a perfumer must be able to distinguish and name about three thousand different basic chemical odors(气味). As a perfumer, you also have to deal with a number of important rules of life that a perfumer must observe, such as not drinking alcohol, not eating spicy dishes and not smoking, because this will seriously affect the sense of smell of a perfumer.

Professional perfumers should in most cases be regarded as chemists. As described earlier, becoming a professional perfumer is not easy, because it is a long and heavy training. It is only the major international perfume brands that employ professional perfumers. This does not change the fact that anyone can try to design perfumes independently. There are quite a lot of people active in the field of making perfume, but these people cannot be classified as professional perfumers.

The development of new perfumes is important, because good perfumes can bring in a lot of money for manufacturers. Those well-known perfumes are usually expensive, because perfume manufacturers spend a lot of budget on development and marketing. The cost of perfume is usually not in the fragrance or perfume bottle. It is the costs in the development and the marketing that make good perfume expensive. In addition, perfume manufacturers spend a lot of time conducting market research and styling.

How exactly a perfumer and the perfume industry work is of course a big secret, but in general, a perfumer spends all day smelling and putting together different scents in order to be able to come up with a new perfume. Nowadays, computers are also used to further analyze certain odors. New fragrances are usually made in different variants until the best result is achieved and the perfume company is satisfied. Developing a new perfume scent generally takes several months after a lot of testing.

【1】What should a perfumer be able to do?

A.Eat spicy food to stimulate the sense.

    B.Distinguish three thousand chemical smells.

C.Remove life habits affecting the sense of smell.

    D.Take a ten-year-long training at a perfume school.

【2】Which statement is right about professional perfumers?

A.Chemists studying smells are professional perfumers.

B.People producing perfumes actively are professional perfumers.

C.People designing perfumes independently are professional perfumers.

D.International perfume brands employ professional perfumers.

【3】What contributes to the high expense of good perfumes?

A.Cost in perfume development and marketing.

B.Cost in fragrance collection and production.

C.Expense in making stylish perfume bottle.

D.Expense in conducting market feedback research.

【4】Which of the following best describes a perfumer’s work?

    A.Boring.

    B.Well-paid.

    C.Painstaking.

    D.Old-fashioned.

  • 24、Several years ago, I had to replace a receptionist for my unit. Before I advertised for the position, I was approached by another manager, and asked if I would consider a transfer from his staff instead of opening a new competition. My natural question was to ask who he wanted me to consider and why.

It appeared from his description of this employee, Maria, that she was having a lot of problems performing her duties and had difficulties with her boss and did not appear to respond to any attempts he, the manager, had made to settle the issues. Now, after listening to his explanation, I really had severe doubts. What crossed my mind, after this discussion, was that he wanted me to take a problem off his hands.

I told him I would think about it and would let him know the next day. As promised, after thinking more about this potential performance issue, I decided that I would agree to speak with Maria privately before I made any decision.

And, what I found out during this interview, left me deep in thought. As it turned out, the performance issue appeared to result from working for a boss who never extended a good morning greeting, never gave a word of encouragement, and was constantly changing the work load and routines. The end result was a totally ruined employee who was unconfident and hated to see a new work day start.

I decided to accept her transfer to my unit. What started out as a shy, withdrawn and frightened employee turned out to be one of the most productive and loyal employee that I had ever worked with. Maria couldn’t do enough and was constantly asking for more responsibility. I was more than happy to give her what she needed praise for work well done, respect as a person, and encouragement for doing well in anything she dealt with.

Sometimes we are guilty of holding others back from accomplishing or doing, or developing as they should or could. It may be a wise idea that we all look in the mirror, from time to time, to see what we are really like.

【1】 What can we learn about the writer from the first paragraph?

    A. He is a manager in the company.

    B. He doesn't like his receptionist.

    C. He likes to compete with others.

    D. He wants to find another position.

    A. attempted to settle the issues

    B. was a problem to her boss

    C. shouldn't stay in the company

    D. could get on well with others

【3】 Why did Maria fail to perform well in her previous job?

    A. Her previous job was not suitable for her.

    B. She had difficulty responding to her manager.

    C. Her boss didn't inspire her working enthusiasm.

    D. Her boss showed no trust in her ability.

【4】 We can infer that before working with the author, Maria ______.

    A. was not welcome by her colleagues

    B. wanted to transfer her position

    C. didn't like her boss

【5】 The writer probably believes that a good boss should ______.
