  • 21、第一节 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A. B. C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

I wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that's impossible. For the most part Chinese people are friendly, easy-going and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the hardest-working people I have ever met.

In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends. I teach many students a year, talking to them freely.

The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US. The city of Xiang Fan I live in isn't large and I live better. Non-imported(非进口的) foods are very cheap, so are clothing and articles of everyday use. The cost of public transportation is very low, too. Chinese value education. However, it is reported that many children can't afford the expenses of schooling and are forced to leave school in some poor areas in China. But they organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion, Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education.

When we read news of China in the west, rarely, if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles have not reached many areas of China, but we also have the same problems.

When I am asked which country I consider better, China or the US, my answer has always been the same, “We are not worse or better than each other, we are only different.”

【1】What does the author think of Chinese people?

    A. He thinks most Chinese people hardly work.

    B. He thinks most Chinese people are proud.

    C. He dislikes most Chinese people.

    D. He praises most Chinese people a lot.

【2】What is the author doing in China?

    A. He is teaching English in a school.

    B. He is visiting the places of interest.

    C. He is studying in a college.

    D. He is on business.

【3】What are NOT cheap in China in the author's opinion?

    A. Clothes and shoes made in China.

    B. Local foods.

    C. Imported foods.

    D. Public transportation tickets.

【4】We can infer from the passage that the author thinks ________.

    A. the westerners have got to know China well

    B. the progress of China is seldom reported in the US

    C. China's economic miracles have appeared everywhere

    D. the education in rural areas is never cared about in China

  • 22、For 300 years, the Slims River had been flowing through Canada’s Yukon region. But last year, in only four days, the water in the big river reduced sharply, which made the river almost disappear. What happened?

After a year of careful studies, a group of scientists recently said that the sudden change of the river was caused by climate change. The Slims River used to be a big river, reaching up to 150 metres at its widest points. It carried melt water from the huge Kaskawulsh glacier(冰川) into the Kluane River, then into the Yukon River toward the Bering Sea.

But in spring 2016, there was a sharp melting of the Kaskawulsh glacier because of climate change. It made the melt water run in a different direction, and into a second river, the Alsek River, then into the Gulf of Alaska. It is thousands of kilometers away.

In geography, this is called “river piracy”. Although it was not unusual in ancient times, this is the first time it has happened under scientists’ noses in modern times. The Slims River is almost dry now, which also takes away the clean air in the region because strong wind blows up all the dust in the river bed. Fish have already swum to other rivers. And sheep from Kluane National Park are now coming down to eat the fresh plants.

Lonnie Thompson, a scientist from Ohio State University, the US, said that we could hardly feel the effects of climate change in our daily life, but the case of the Slims River shows what will happen when gradual temperature increases.

【1】Why did the Slims River almost disappear?

A.Because the air pollution brought more rain to Yukon region.

B.Because the climate suddenly became hotter than before.

C.Because the human activities destroyed the banks of the river.

D.Because the Kaskawulsh glacier did not exist any longer.

【2】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.The Slims River has now become part of Kluane National Park.

B.The air in the region of the Sli ms Ri ver is still clean.

C.Climate change has no effect on our daily life.

D.Global warming can bring sudden changes to the environment.

【3】In which direction did the water run in 2016?

① the Kaskawulsh glacier ② the Gulf of Alaska

③ the Yukon River ④ the Alsek River

⑤ the Bering Sea ⑥ the Kluane River

    A.①→④→②

    B.①→③→⑤

    C.③→⑥→⑤

    D.⑥→③→②

【4】What may the underlined part “river piracy” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.A river suddenly disappears without any reason.

B.Two rivers join together to make a bigger one.

C.The flow of a river is suddenly taken away into another.

D.The water in a river reduces sharply.

  • 23、Whether it’s a tricky math problem or an unexpected bill, daily life is full of stressful experiences. Previous studies have suggested dogs might pick up on human emotions, possibly through smell, but questions remained over whether they could detect stress and if this could be done through odor(气味).

Clara Wilson is a PhD student at Queen’s University Belfast and first author of a new research. He and colleagues report how they first constructed a stand bearing three containers, each lid with a hole. They were able to train four dogs to indicate the container holding a particular breath and sweat sample, even when the line-up included unused gauze(纱布),samples from another person,or samples from the same person taken at a different time of day. Then the team turned to breath and sweat samples collected from 36 people asked to count backwards from 9,000 in units of 17. The participants reported feeling stressed by the task and, for the 27 who carried it out in the laboratory, their blood pressure and heart rate rose.

The dogs were taught to pick out samples taken just after the task from a line-up that included two containers holding unused gauze. The researchers then tested whether the dogs could do the same when the line-up included unused gauze and samples taken from the same participant just before the task, when they were more relaxed. Each set of samples was shown to a single dog in 20 trials. The results reveal that the dogs chose the “stressed” sample in 675 out of the 720 trials.

“While it is unclear what chemicals the dogs were picking up on, the study has definitively proven that people, when they have a stress response, their odor profile changes,”said Wilson, adding the findings could prove useful when training service dogs, such as those that support people with post-traumatic stress disorder(创伤后应激障碍).

【1】The first paragraph is mainly written to_______.

    A.argue a dog-related statement

    B.introduce a stress-based research

C.analyze causes of stress in daily life

    D.explain why previous studies failed

    【2】What does Paragraph 2 imply?

A.Humans may produce odor when stressed.

B.Unused gauze is the key to the experiment.

    C.Stress is characterized with heartbeats.

D.Researchers are good at training dogs.

【3】What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

    A.Dogs are well-informed.

    B.Dogs play their role well.

    C.Dogs prefer unused gauze.

    D.Dogs can smell stress out.

【4】In which part of a newspaper can we probably see this text?

    A.Pet world.

    B.Green planet.

    C.Science and life.

    D.Art and literature.

Manners nowadays in big cities like London are particularly non-existent. It’s nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to elbow an elderly woman aside in the dash for the last remaining seat on the tube or bus, much less stand up and offer his seat to her.

This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued by young men, who say that, since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with courtesy(谦恭有礼) and that those who go out to work should take their turn in the rat race like anyone else. Women have never claimed to be physically as strong as men. Even if it’s not agreed, however, that young men should stand up for older women, the fact remains that courtesy should be shown to the old, the sick and the burdened. Are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves First come, first served”, while a gray-haired woman, a mother with a young child or a cripple stands? Yet this is too often seen.

Older people, tired and easy annoyed from a day’s work, aren’t angels, either—far from it. Many a brisk argument or an insulting quarrel breaks out as the weary queues push and shove each other to get on buses and tubes. One cannot commend(推崇) this, of course, but one does feel there is just a little more excuse.

If cities are to remain pleasant places to live in at all, however, it seems necessary, not only that communication in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. Shop assistant won’t bother to assist, taxi drivers growl at each other as they dash dangerously round corners, bus conductors pull the bell before their desperate passengers have had time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it’s up to the young and strong to do their small part to stop such deterioration (恶化).

【1】What is the writer’s opinion concerning courteous manners towards women?

    A. They no longer need to be treated differently from men.

    B. Young men should give up their seats to young women.

    C. “Lady first” should universally practiced.

    D. Special consideration ought to be shown to them in some cases.

【2】What does the rat race” in paragraph 2 probably mean in the passage?

    A. A race that involves many people

    B. A well-paid job

    C. A fierce competition

    D. A race for rats

【3】According to the passage, communication between human beings would not be smoother unless ____.

    A. people become more considerate towards each other

    B. people are not so tired and easily annoyed

    C. women are treated with more courtesy

    D. public transport is improved

【4】The main purpose of the passage is to ______.

    A. call on people in big cities to pay more attention to politeness

    B. blame the schoolboy’s rude behavior towards elderly women on tube or bus

    C. criticize the fast pace of life in most of the big cities

    D. tell young men to give their seats to elderly people and women
