21、Eleven years ago, Ms. Liivand moved to Miami, Florida, where she continued swimming in the ocean. In one training session, she nearly wound up swallowing (吞) some plastic that was floating in the sea.
That experience made her think of all the sea animals facing similar pollution every day. She decided she wanted to work to make people more aware of plastic pollution.
She began swimming with a special single swimming fin attached to both of her feet. This rubbery “monofin” (单鱼鳍) allows her to swim by kicking both of her legs together. “Swimming without using my arms is similar to how dolphins swim,” says Ms. Liivand. She believes that swimming with a monofin “sends a bigger message”.
Ms. Liivand first set the world record for swimming with a monofin in 2019 off the coast of California. In 2020, she broke the record again in Miami, Florida. A year later, she set a new Guinness World Record again in Florida. For the last year, Ms. Livand has been getting up at 4 every day, putting on her monofin, and going swimming. To help improve her strength, she sometimes even pulled other people in the water.
On May 7, Ms. Liivand broke the record once more, this time swimming the length of a full marathon. It took her 11 hours and 54 seconds to swim 26. 2 miles. The water was rough, and she ran into a few problems, but she didn’t stop. “I got hurt by jellyfish,” she said, “And kept telling myself that it was not the time to cry.”
To keep her energy up, a friend followed her in a kayak (皮艇) and gave her food and water from time to time. Along the way, Ms. Liivand picked up all the trash she found and put it in the kayak. By the end of her marathon, the kayak held three bags full of trash.

22、How to Communicate with Confidence
Communicating with confidence is an important life skill. Whether you’re trying to persuade your friends to go to your restaurant of choice or writing an email to your boss asking for a raise, having confidence in yourself can make your life better.
Maintain good posture. Back straight, head up but relaxed is a good way to show confidence. 【1】
Identify and communicate your needs and wants. 【2】 Whether it’s yours spouse or your boss, sometimes we just don’t tell them exactly what we are thinking. To be more assertive (坚定自信的), tell people in a polite yet honest way what you need from them. For example, you may say, “I know it’s convenient for me to be available over email during weekends, but I can’t do that anymore.”
Avoid nervous movements or “adjustments”. These telegraph your nervousness. Constantly adjusting your clothes, for instance, is distracting a listener or someone speaking directly to you. 【3】
Become a broken record. 【4】 This often seems to be the case when dealing with customer service. For example, a customer may say to you, “This fan worked for one day and broke. I need a replacement.” You may then respond, “I’m so sorry, but our sales are final.” If the customer continues to get upset, you may calmly say, “Let me get the manager to explain it to you.”
【5】 It’s terrible to feel attacked in conversation, but there are steps you can take to turn the tables. You should be assertive without being aggressive and try to move the conversation into a more productive area. Try using “I” statements to help become more assertive. For example, you may say, “I disagree that this is a bad idea,” or “I believe this can work.”
A.Stand up for yourself.
B.Write your remarks beforehand.
C.Relax and listen to what the other person is saying.
D.Be clear about what you are asking the other person.
E.If you feel better, you will communicate with more confidence.
F.You turn the criticism back onto yourself and show concern for them.
G.Sometimes, a situation might call for constant repetition of a problem.
23、Amy Pankratz spent a few nights in the hospital with her daughter, Isabella, who caught a bad flu. “Lying in bed beside Isabella, I could hear the cries of children in pain, ”says Amy. “It completely broke my heart. ”
When Isabella was getting well and could leave her room, she wore her prized possession—a “superhero cape(短斗篷)”Amy had sewn to encourage her—and walked into the hallway. The pink cape was an instant hit with the other young patients, who were doing exercise around the nursing station. Then, all the kids were taking turns wearing the cape, giggling, ”Amy says. “These were some of the same children I had heard crying the night before, and here they were playing and having fun—kids just being kids! ”
From that moment on, Amy began making Comfort Capes for little ones battling with serious illnesses. “I felt God presenting an opportunity, ”she says. “I hoped Comfort Capes can help these kids feel brave, to lift some of the fear away. ”
Since then, Amy has made and donated more than 5, 000 capes in the United States. Amy usually pays for materials herself, although she accepts donations.
The capes she makes for kids in treatment are different from those her own children have. Before Amy starts to sew she learns what image or character the little boy or girl connects with. “ I choose the pattern, color and theme specially for each child,” explains Amy.
When she is not sewing, Amy is raising awareness of childhood cancers and looking into ways to get Comfort Capes to more kids who need them, “ If a cape can help a child, even only for a moment, forget his illness, its worth the time spent sewing, she says.

24、Melinda Skaar wasn't expecting any phone calls. Skaar was working late in her office at the First Internet bank of California. By 10:45 that night she was almost ready to go home when the phone rang. Picking it up, she heard a guard shouting, “There is a fire! Get out of there.” Skaar didn't panic. She figured that it was just a small fire. Her office building was huge. There were 62 floors and her desk was on the 37th floor. Skaar called out to office mate Stephen Oksas, who also stayed late to work. But when they got out to the hallway, they were met by a cloud of black smoke. Rushing back, Skaar shut the door and filled the space at the bottom of the door with her jacket to keep the smoke out.
Then they called 911. Before they could call their families, however, the line went dead. That meant that they were completely cut off from the outside world. All they could do was wait and hope someone would come to rescue them.
Minutes ticked by. Smoke began to float into the office. Soon it became hard for them to breathe. Looking around, Skaar noticed a small workroom. It seemed to have cleaner air. So they crowded there. That helped for a while, but in time even the workroom was filled with deadly smoke. Hopeless, they tried to break the windows, but the glass was not breakable. Everything they threw at it just bounced back. Defeated, they struggled back to the workroom. They felt weak and dizzy. Soon Skaar found Oksas had passed out.
As Skaar and Oksas lay near death, rescuers were rushing to find them. At last, at about 4 a.m., firefighters found them.
Skaar and Oksas knew they were lucky to be alive. Sunday is my birthday, Skaar told a reporter. She would be turning 29, but she knew she had already got the best present possible—the gift of life.

25、Teenage years can be confusing for both teenagers and parents. At about 15, many teens start thinking about how they feel about themselves and out how this matches or mismatches what others think of them. Most teens work through this by the age of 16 or 17.
Often teenagers are treated like bigger children, but they will never become and responsible if they are not allowed to make some decisions for themselves. If parents forbid their children from doing something, chances are that they will do it without permission anyway. The role of a parent must, therefore, change from that of protector and keeper to that of friend and .
Yet even the most caring parents misunderstand their children sometimes, and some think of teenagers as insecure, stubborn and .As a result, teenagers always keep their from their parents.Teens often that their parents repeat the same things over and over again and never listen to them.Parents must understand that teens need to be allowed to their side of any problem and express their point of view.
Thus, more private and level-headed communication is needed for the parents.Every parent should try to schedule time to be with their child, like taking a short trip together. This time allows parents to talk and listen without from work or other family members. It might also be good to encourage teens to important issues at dinner.Discussion time shows teens that parents are interested in them and their lives.
A person’s teenage years are a key time for them to identify their own ,like distinguishing good from evil.Handling and improving communication with teenagers is not easy, but success will be for parents and teens alike.
