Conflict is on the menu tonight at the café La Chope. This evening, as on every Thursday night, psychologist Maud Lehanne is leading two of France’s favorite pastimes, coffee drinking and the “talking cure”. Here they are learning to get in touch with their true feelings. It isn’t always easy. They customers - some thirty Parisians who pay just under $2 (plus drinks) per session - care quick to intellectualize (高谈阔论),slow to open up and connect. “You are forbidden to say ‘one feels,’ or ‘people think’,” Lehane told them. “Say ‘I think,’ ‘Think me’.”

A café society where no intellectualizing is allowed? It couldn’t seem more un-French. But Lehanne’s psychology café is about more than knowing oneself: It’s trying to help the city’s troubled neighborhood cafes. Over the years, Parisian cafes have fallen victim to changes in the French lifestyle - longer working hours, a fast food boom and a younger generation’s desire to spend more time at home. Dozens of new theme cafes appear to change the situation. Cafes focused around psychology, history, and engineering are catching on, filling tables well into the evening.

The city’s psychology cafes, which offer great comfort, are among the most popular places. Middle-aged homemakers, retirees, and the unemployed come to such cafes to talk about love, anger, and dreams with a psychologist. And they come to Lehanne’s group just to learn to say what they feel. “There’s a strong need in Paris for communication,” says Maurice Frisch, a cafe La Chope regular who works as a religious instructor in a nearby church. “People have few real friends. And they need to open up.” Lehanne says she’d like to see psychology cafes all over France. “If people had normal lives, these cafes wouldn’t exist”, she says, “If life weren’t a battle, people wouldn’t need a special place just to speak.” But them, it wouldn’t be France.

【1】What are people encouraged to do at the cafe La Chope?

    A. Learn a new subject

    B. Keep in touch with friends.

    C. Show off their knowledge.

    D. Express their true feelings.

【2】 How are cafes affected by French lifestyle changes?

    A. They are less frequently visited.

    B. They stay open for longer hours.

    C. They have bigger night crowds.

    D. They start to serve fast food.

  • 22、In the world of Chinese archaeology(考古学), a sign of a dig's importance is the sight of Zhou Mingsheng at work. A field technician who has worked at archaeological sites all around China. Master Zhou is credited with the gentlest touch in his profession. Born into a farming family, he is a “national-level craftsman” with a talent for using simple tools to get relics(遗物) that would crumble in other hands, says his current boss, Wang Xu, director of an archaeological site at Shuanghuaishu, a Neolithic(新石器时代的) settlement near the Yellow River in the central province of Henan.

It is not beauty that attracts visitors to Shuanghuaishu. At 5,300 years old, the settlement is the work of a culture too simple to have left behind many buried treasures. The single most precious find, to date, is a finger-length sculpture of a silkworm. Nor is the setting lovely: an area surrounded by deafening insects, between a highway and two power stations. Rather, the site's importance is historical. For since the birth of Chinese archaeology in the 1920s, it has been inseparable from claims that China has the oldest unbroken civilisation on Earth.

Leading archaeologists say that the site has the right combination of location, age and distinctive cultural elements to be the capital of an early Chinese kingdom. That would make it a bridge between China's written history and the era of the Yellow Emperor, who is said to rule over these central plains almost 5,000 years ago, though many foreign scholars doubt his existence. Chinese media call the site proof of China's 5,000 years of history.

Foreigners complain about a lack of written records, Mr. Wang notes. Perhaps they are missing symbols that will one day be understood, for instance in patterned pottery. Outsiders “can't keep using Western standards to apply to Chinese ruins,” he argues.

【1】What does the underlined word “crumble” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Break.

    B.Start.

    C.Wait.

    D.Shine.

    【2】Why does Shuanghuaishu attract visitors?

    A.It has appealing scenery.

    B.It has various precious treasures.

C.It is of great historical significance.

    D.It is easily accessible.

【3】What is Mr. Wang's attitude towards foreigners’ view?

    A.Unconcern.

    B.Disapproving.

    C.Supportive.

    D.Not mentioned.

【4】What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.Chinese history amazes the world.

    B.Chinese archaeology catches on.

    C.China follows its tradition.

    D.China digs its past.

  • 23、   Commencement (毕业典礼)is a time for idealism.

But economic reality is cruel everywhere; especially for new college graduates. They have been told repeatedly that a college degree is an open sesame (芝麻) to the global economy. But that’s not necessarily so, according to new research by two economists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Frank Levy and Peter Temin.

It is true that people with college degrees make more money than people without degrees. The gap has narrowed somewhat in recent years, which is disturbing. But the earning power of college graduates still far outpaces that of less-educated workers.

The bad news, though, is that a college degree does not ensure a bigger share of the economic pie for many graduates. In recent decades Mr. Levy and Mr. Temin show, only college-educated women have seen their income grow in line with economy wide gains in productivity. The earnings of male college graduates have failed to keep pace with productivity gains.

Instead, a huge share of productivity growth, which expands the nation’s total income, is going to Americans on the top of the income scale. In 2005, the latest year with available data, the top 1 percent of Americans--whose average annual income was $1.1 million--took in 21.8 percent of the nation’s income, their largest share since 1929.

Administration officials, and other politicians and economists, often, believe that income inequality reflects an education gap. But Mr. Levy and Mr. Temin show that in the case of men, the average bachelor’s degree is not enough to catch the rising tide of the global economy.

They argue that the real reason that inequality is worsening is the lack of strong policies that broadly distribute economic gains. In the past, for example, a more progressive income tax and unions promote equality. Positive measures have also helped and probably accounts, in part, for the pay growth of college-educated women. But such measures have been eroding and new ones have not yet emerged, making the income gap even greater.

Mr. Levy and Mr. Temin conclude that only a new government policy can restore general prosperity. That’s a challenge to the nation’s leaders and today’s graduates. America needs them to contribute to the development of the nation in a global economy.

1The passage is mainly about that ________.

A.there is a big income gap between female and male college graduates in America

B.college graduates find it hard to find an idea job after graduation in America

C.college degrees are losing value in America

D.research shows that American government should take measures to ensure income equality for college graduates

2What is the main idea of Paragraph 5?

A.Much of the total income of America has been gained by a few very rich people.

B.The whole nation has enjoyed a big income growth with the growth of productivity.

C.A small part of people in America can have income increase.

D.Upper class Americans contribute most to productivity growth.

3The underlined word “eroding” in Paragraph 7 probably means ________.

A.being gradually destroyed by wind or rain B.gradually not suitable

    C.gradually disappearing D.gradually reducing power

4We can infer from the passage that _____.

A.female college graduates have higher income than male ones

B.income tax can guarantee income equality

C.female college graduates have benefited from some governmental measures to ensure their income growth

D.new measures and policies have been taken to promote income equality

5From the passage, some economists believe that the worsening income inequality is caused by ______.

A.lack of proper governmental policies B.lower college degree of college graduates

C.gender discrimination D.underdevelopment of economy and productivity

  • 24、   A fully electric seaplane has made its first flight over the mouth of the Fraser River near Vancouver, Canada. The flight represents a milestone in the long process of reducing the aviation industry’s emissions and costs by electrifying short-to-medium distance commercial flying.

Several hundred people crowded the river bank on Tuesday morning to witness what they hoped would be a historic moment. They were not disappointed. Among cheers, the battery-powered Harbour Air seaplane lifted off into the sky. The plane flew a short round-trip downriver before landing five minutes later.

“It was magical. It was much quieter than I had expected it to be,” said Nicki Malcom, one witness from Auburn, Washington. “It’s definitely the future,” said Chip Jamison, who came from Portland to see the electric plane he produced parts for. “You can see it with automobiles. Planes are next. It’s right in front of us.”

The test pilot was the only person on board the six-passenger DHC-2 de Havilland Beaver. He was the CEO and founder of Habour Air, Greg McDougall. McDougall’s seaplane airline teamed up with a Redmond, Washington-based electric motor maker named MagniX to transform the classic de Havilland Beaver plane. MagniX CEO Roei Ganzarski sees the seaplane’s first flight as a milestone, similar to the first jet takeoff.

“Today you witnessed the first shot of the electric aviation revolution,” Ganzarski told the two companies’ staff, contractors, media and other celebrators. “Let’s start the revolution.” Ganzarski laid out a case for how battery-powered flight offers lower noise, zero pollution and could reduce fuel and maintenance costs. “Lower operating costs for airlines like Harbour Air will mean lower ticket prices for all of you,” he said. “Lower operating costs mean they can now fly to more destinations that we couldn’t fly to before.”

It will be some time before regular folks can book a ticket on a clean, electric seaplane.

1According to the passage, the Harbour Air seaplane

A.is adapted from the de Havilland Beaver

B.will replace the automobile in the near future

C.can carry more than six passengers

D.has investment from the Vancouver government

2What is Chip Jamison’s attitude towards electric seaplanes?

    A.Critical. B.Objective. C.Optimistic. D.Ambiguous.

3What can we learn from Roei Ganzarski’s words?

A.Electric seaplanes only help cut down air pollution and costs.

B.People can fly to more destinations in less time on battery-powered planes.

C.The seaplane’s first flight symbolizes the success of the electric aviation revolution.

D.People may get cheaper tickets by taking electric seaplanes.

    4This passage centers on

A.a way to cut down air pollution

B.the benefits we get from electric seaplane

C.an all-electric seaplane that completes its first flight

D.the first step in the electric aviation revolution

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

“You don’t have to come, you know,” Lee whispered angrily.

A few months ago, Dad had suggested taking Lee and his friends on a day trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park. It was meant to be boys only, but then Father decided at the last minute to take Frankie along. Now she was baggage— her brother’s unwanted baggage.

Dad said, “Listen up. You need to take responsibility for your own equipment.” Frankie and the boys dutifully checked their equipment. Frankie looked at Dad’s kit. There was a compass, a survival blanket, first-aid kit, extra water, matches, and more.

By the time they reached the parking lot, it was mid-morning and there were few people around. Frankie and her dad studied the map while the boys hung around.

It was raining lightly when they set out — the boys racing ahead, followed by Dad and Frankie. The trail stretched before them, disappearing into the forest like a path in a fairy tale.

They climbed steadily, the day brightening around them. All around, there was nothing but trees, the bright-blue sky overhead, and glimpses of the magnificent Mummy Ranges.

When they reached an alpine meadow (高山草甸), Dad announced it was lunchtime. Frankie took off her backpack and gazed at the vastness of the landscape surrounding her.

After lunch, Frankie followed behind, determined to put some distance between herself and the boys. Frankie watched Adam climb up the rock, closely followed by Lee and Damien. Dad carefully pulled himself up after the boys, but as he went to stand up, the corner of the rock broke into pieces, and he lost his balance. Although he fell only a short distance, he landed awkwardly and hard. Frankie heard the air go out of him before he prepared another breath to yell.
