二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The field of robotics is fast-growing. Robots can now perform complicated movements with elegance — back-flipping, practicing park our moves, even “carving” classical sculptures. Then there’s Sophia, a robot whose widespread appeal lies not in big, dramatic actions (her body is often fixed to a rolling base), but rather an unsettling human-like appearance, compounded with the complex ability to express emotions(情感).

“We’re not fully there yet, but Sophia can represent a number of emotional states, and she can also see emotional expressions on a human face as well,” explains David Hanson, the founder of Hanson Robotics. According to Hanson, Sophia now has simulations(仿真) of every major muscle in the human face, allowing her to generate expressions of joy, curiosity, confusion, reflection, sorrow, frustration, among other feelings. Besides deep learning and a pre-programmed set of expressions, Sophia’s face is constructed using the latest developments in material technology, meaning it appears softer, more flexible and therefore, more realistic. The lab also studies the neurobiology and biology of human facial expressions to help inform how mechanical ones can behave.

When Hanson first began sculpting Sophia, he wanted her form to resonate(共鸣) with people from around the world. To that end, he looked to old statues of Nefertiti (queen of Egypt), ancient Chinese paintings, Audrey Hepburn and even his wife as inspiration.

Since her activation in 2016, Sophia has since graced the covers of fashion publications and starred in a recent Moncler campaign. During an event at Shanghai Fashion Weekend, Sophia wore 3-D copper arm cuffs and sculptural garments designed by British artist Sadie Clayton. “The reason I was interested in working with Sophia is because being an artist, it mixes fashion, art and technology. This was the most natural, organic way of me developing my process,” says Clayton.

Besides modeling, she has made appeared on talk shows and spoken at conferences about issues ranging from artificial intelligence to the role of robots. Controversially, she was even granted Saudi Arabian citizenship, becoming the first robot to have a nationality. “I don’t know what it is about Sophia, that speaks to people, but I hope that we can develop our AI and robots in a way that makes a deep emotional connection.”

1What makes Sophia different from previous robots?

    A.Carving fine artworks.

B.Being able to perform complex movements.

    C.Generating many human-like facial expressions.

D.Reacting more quickly and produce her own thought.

2What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

A.What emotions can Sophia express vividly.

    B.Why Sophia produces different emotions.

    C.How researchers programmed the robotics.

D.What is the latest product of Hanson Robotics.

3What can we learn from paragraph 3?

A.Sophia has starred in a recent movie.

B.Sophia launched many campaigns with Clayton.

C.Sophia is a mixture of fashion and entertainment.

D.Sophia is designed to have universal appeal to people.

4What may cause much public discussion about Sophia?

    A.Holding her own nationality.

    B.Modeling for the fashion show.

    C.Communicating with human beings.

D.Making a speech at significant conferences.

  • 22、Best Science Fiction

The Sprawl Trilogy by William Gibson

This classic trilogy from william Gibson consists of Neuromancer, Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. The book that started the entire concept of Cyberpunk, the Hugo Award-, Nebula Award-and Philip K. Dick Award-winning Neuromancer remains one of the best sci-fi books ever written and the entire trilogy is worth a read, even if it’s the original that gets all the praise.

    Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons

This series by Dan Simmons consists of Hyperion, The Fall of Hyperion, End ymion and The Rise of Endymion. Truly one of the great works in science fiction history, the Hugo Award-winning Hyperion Cantos is an absolutely excellent story of extreme terror, character-building and wild-world-building that is almost without equal in the type. How we haven’t gotten a proper onscreen adaptation of this series yet, I have no idea, but Perhaps it’s best left in its original, amazing book form.

Ender’s Game Quartet by Orson Scott Card

Ender’s Game is often read in schools, but it has incredibly mature themes like isolation, loneliness, competition and fear- many of which are more relevant now than when Orson Scott Card first began the series in 1985. If you love Ender’s Game, it’s worth reading the whole series to follow the sci-fi adventures of Andrew “Ender” Wiggin: Ender’s Game, Ender in Exile, Xenocide and Children of the Mind.

    Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

This is the only stand-alone book on this list, as the rest are all in a series, so if you don’t feel like investing in 300, 000 pages of content, Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash is for you. This book is the heir ( 继 承 人 ) to Neuromancer’s Cyberpunk throne and an absolutely excellent read from Stephenson. The author uses virtual reality as his setting, and the main character is a pizza deliveryman in one world and a warrior prince in another.

【1】Which book won the most awards?

    A.Neuromancer.

    B.Hyperion.

    C.Ender’s Game.

    D.Snow Crash.

【2】What do we know about Ender’s Game Quarte?

    A.It consists of three books.

    B.It is popular among students.

C.It has been adapted into a film.

    D.It focuses on children’s problems.

【3】What is special about Snow Crash?

    A.It’s the longest story.

    B.It’s about the solar system.

    C.It’s not a series.

    D.It’s not a real story.

  • 23、For much of history, reading was a fairly noisy activity. In ancient Iraq and Syria some 4,000 years ago, the commonly used words for “to read” literally meant “to cry out” or “to listen". But today, silent reading is the norm. The majority of us bottle the words in our heads as if sitting in a quiet library. Reading out loud is largely kept for bedtime stories and performances.

However, a growing body of research suggests that we may be missing out by reading only with the voices inside our minds. The ancient art of reading aloud has a number of benefits for adults, from helping improve our memories and understand complex texts, to strengthening emotional bonds between people. Colin MacLeod, a psychologist at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has researched the impact of reading aloud on memory. He and his colleagues have shown that people consistently remember words and texts better if they read them aloud than if they read them silently. The effect of reading aloud is particularly strong in children, but it works for older people, too.MacLeod has named this phenomenon the “production effect”. It means that producing written words-that's to say, reading them out loud-improves our memory of them.

The production effect has been replicated in numerous studies for more than a decade. In one study in Australia, a group of seven- to- ten- year- olds were presented with a list of words and asked to read some silently, and others aloud. Afterwards, they correctly recognised 87% of the words they'd read aloud, but only 70% of the silent ones.

In another study, adults aged 67 to 88 were given the same task-reading words either silently or aloud-before then writing down all those they could remember. They were able to recall 27% of the words they had read aloud, but only 10% of those they'd read silently. When asked which ones they recognised, they were able to correctly identify 80% of the words they had read aloud, but only 60% of the silent ones. MacLeod and his team have found the effect can last up to a week after the reading task.

【1】What can we know from the first two paragraphs?

A.Reading aloud started in ancient Iraq and Syria.

B.People remember words better in a quiet library.

C.Reading aloud is beneficial to people of all ages.

D.Silent reading results in missing out some words.

【2】What does the underlined word “replicated" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Challenged.

    B.Repeated.

    C.Ignored.

    D.Improved.

【3】What are the two studies in the last two paragraphs intended to prove?

A.There is no production effect at all.

    B.Reading aloud improves memory.

C.Silent reading has an instant effect.

    D.Children remember more words.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the passage?.

A.Reading aloud-an art from the past.

    B.Reading silently-a new trend

    C.Reading aloud-a blessing for memory.

    D.Reading silently-a complex skill

  • 24、   I was enjoying this afternoon more than I had expected. Often, the tryouts for the spring musical tested the limits of my patience and nerves, with one hopeful girl after another taking turns walking onto the wooden stage, delivering an adequate but uninspired version of some Rodgers & Hammerstein number, and then being politely excused by Mrs Dominguez as the next name on the list was called.

However, this was to be my third straight year in the musical, and the confidence that my seniority afforded me around the more nervous newcomers allowed me to take pleasure in radiance of my own balance.

I had already sung my audition (试唱) song an hour ago, starting the day’s ceremonies. This year, I used “God Bless the Child”, a choice I found to be quite sophisticated since Billie Holiday’s version of it was familiar mostly to adults, and even then, mostly to adults of the previous generation. More importantly, it required a reserved performance, which I felt showcased my maturity, especially because most of the other auditioners chose songs that would show their enthusiasm, even if it meant their technical mastery would not be on full display.

Normally, the first audition was feared by most. Mrs Dominguez would ask if anyone wanted to volunteer to “get it over with”, but no one would make a sound. Then, she would call the first name off her list and the room would drop into an uncomfortably serious silence as the first student walked nervously up to the stage. I often imagined during those moments that I was witness to a death-house liver taking his march toward a quick curtain.

But not this year. I had decided to make a show of my own self-confidence by volunteering to go first. Such a fearless act, I had figured, would probably instill even more fear into my competition because they would realize that I had something they clearly lacked. Mrs. Dominguez had seemed neither surprised nor charmed by my decision to go first. Although she was annoyed by my escalating pride, I also acknowledged that I was one of the more talents actors and was probably correct in assuming myself a winner.

At this late stage of the afternoon, I felt like a queen, sitting in the back of the auditorium with my royal court of friends and admirers. They took care to sit far enough away from Mrs Dominguez that they would not be caught in the act of belittling the other students’ auditions.

To me, the endless parade of the ambitious who sang their hearts out for three minutes each were like clowns performing for my amusement. As Mrs Dominguez read another name off her list, I prepared myself for a special treat.

1What did the writer do one afternoon?

A.She enjoyed her time watching the audition.

B.She performed in the school spring musical.

C.She attended the selective trial of the school musical.

D.She helped Mrs Dominguez to select musical talents.

2The writer believed the song she chose for her audition ________.

A.would be the most inspiring Rodgers and Hammerstein numbers

B.was the most sophisticated song in Billie Holiday’s versions

C.would likely be more recognizable to her parents than to her friends

D.would allow her to more effectively showcase her enthusiasm

3The main purpose of the underlined statement in paragraph 5 is to ________.

A.offer a contrast created by the writer’s choice of audition

B.present reasons why this year’s audition was the strangest

C.suggest that the writer’s imagination no longer involved the same imagery

D.inform the reader that students’ fears of going first were something of the past

4Why did the writer volunteer to perform the first audition of the day?

A.To guarantee her a part in the play.

B.To impress and charm Mrs Dominguez.

C.To add her confidence in her performance.

D.To make the others feel they could not compete with her.

5The passage portrays the writer as ________.

A.concerned and nervous B.arrogant and indifferent

C.friendly and inclusive D.confused and surprised

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As I sat by the window of our schoolhouse that afternoon, my heart began to sink further with each passing car. This was a day I had been looking forward to for weeks. Miss Pace had kept a running countdown on the blackboard, and our class had almost gone crazy by the time the much-anticipated “party Friday” had arrived.

I had happily volunteered my mother when Miss Pace requested cookie volunteers. Mom’s chocolate chips were the best on our block, and I knew they would be a hit with my classmates. But two o’clock passed, and there was no sign of her. Most of the other mothers had already come and gone, dropping off their offerings of dessert. My mother was missing in action.

“Don’t worry, Robbie. She’ll be along soon,” Miss Pace said as I looked sadly at the street. I looked at the wall clock just in time to see its black minute hand shift to half past two.

Around me, the noisy party went on, but I wouldn’t leave my window watch post. Miss Pace did her best to comfort me, but I just stayed there, holding out hope that the familiar family car would appear, carrying my embarrassed mother with a tin of her famous cookies under her arm.

The three o’clock bell soon awoke me from my thoughts and I sadly grabbed my schoolbag and headed home.

On the four-block walk, I plotted my revenge (报复). I would slam the front door upon entering, refuse to return her hug when she rushed over to me, and never speak to her again.

The house was empty when I arrived and I looked for a note on the refrigerator that might explain my mother’s absence, but found none. Heartbroken and angry, I was lying face-down on my bed upstairs when I heard her come through the front door and mount the steps.

When she entered my room and sat beside me on my bed, I didn’t move but instead stared blankly into my pillow, refusing to acknowledge her presence.
