21、One of the big knocks against solar panels (太阳能电板) is how much land they take up compared to how much power they produce. But what if there were a ready-made source of open land nearby to cities and towns that were guaranteed not to be used for anything else?
As it turns out, landfills (垃圾填埋场) are built into solar farms all over the country. While they present a bigger challenge than building one on flat ground, the idea of turning landfills and brownfields from their waste state into a new service for the community is deeply appealing.
For example, Nexamp’s Solar Star Urbana Landfill community solar farm occupies nearly 40 acres on a landfill. It features nearly 14,000 solar panels and produces 5.2 megawatts of clean energy for low and middle income residents (居民), who receive discounts on their energy bill if they sign up to take on the solar energy. Annapolis Maryland has one too-55,000 panels on an 80-acre landfill, producing power for 2,500 people.
It isn’t the easiest thing to build a solar farm on a landfill. For one thing, the traditional method of securing the panels on concrete struts (支柱) buried in the ground is out of the question, as it would break the cap on the landfill. This also currently puts a landfill solar panel out of the reach of current technologies that allow the movement of the panels to follow along the sun.
However there are also aspects which are easier, for example there are usually communities that live nearby landfills, and the local cheap power access can help save them money. Furthermore, there’s no risk of facing high land prices.
There are more than 10,000 closed or capped landfills around the country, and perhaps as many as 4,000 of them could be turned into solar farms immediately.
【1】How do residents benefit from taking on the solar energy?
A.They pay less for the energy bill.
B.Their land is paid for higher prices.
C.The energy they use is much cleaner.
D.They receive more energy than promised.
【2】What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The disadvantages of a traditional method.
B.The slow progress of current technologies.
C.The potential danger brought by solar energy.
D.The technical challenges of building a solar farm.
【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards building landfill solar farms?
A.Critical.
B.Ambiguous.
C.Favorable.
D.Objective.
22、I was stuck in O'hare airport on an extremely long weather delay, pacing up and down the waiting hall for some exercise, when I passed a wine bar for the twentieth time or so. But this time there was a young woman behind the piano, playing what I could only describe as absolutely beautiful classical music. She had not been there ten minutes earlier when I passed.
I sat down at an empty table for four very near the piano, and began to be warmed by her music and a bit by the wine! She played so effortlessly and with such beauty in every note. Her music immediately brought a huge smile to my face!
Soon, on a break, I thanked her and she told me that after a long day traveling, and now also facing long weather delays, she "just needed to blow off some steam." Wow! Her version of blowing off steam was a gift to get.
As I sat alone drinking my wine, absorbed in this young woman's celebration of her musical passion, two women approached my table and asked if they could join me. I invited them to sit and we immediately began sharing our love of music and celebrating the happiness the piano music was bringing us at that moment.
The two women and I began to talk about our travels, life journeys, and passions. Hearing that unbelievable piano music, and then meeting such interesting women, who generously shared with me their wisdom, perspectives, and feelings of love for each other, was truly joyous. Faced with an 11-hour travel day — to get what normally takes 45 minutes — could have been physically and emotionally exhausting. Rather, by accident of walking by a wine bar at the right moment, and having a couple of seats open at my table, my life was filled with joy.
I will cherish those moments for some time to come. This experience highlights (突出) the critical need in our lives to stop and listen to the music, to invite others to sit at your life table, to open yourself up to a stranger or two, sharing some of your deepest perspectives and experiences. Be open to noticing, absorbing, and also contributing to the joy around you!

A. Reduce anger.
B. Relax herself.
C. Make full use of time.
D. Breathe fresh air.
【2】How long was the author’s travel supposed to take without weather delay?
A. 10 minutes. B. 20 minutes. C. 45 minutes. D. 11 hours.

A. Happy and meaningful.
B. Lonely but unforgettable.
C. Boring and meaningless.
D. Long and tiring.
【4】The author writes the text in order to encourage people _______.
A. to make the acquaintance of strangers
B. to share your experiences with others
C. to communicate with others more often
D. to notice and enjoy the happiness around you
23、 Thirst is one of the fundamental urges a living thing can have. After all, water is the solvent that we rely on to transport essential molecules (分子) around our bodies to keep us alive. So it is perhaps a bit suspicious that water doesn’t seem to have any flavor. Shouldn’t we have evolved a taste for this essential substance?
Well, perhaps we have. Several new studies seem to indicate not only that water does, in fact, have a taste, but that we might have taste buds (味蕾) that respond directly to it.
We now know that there are at least five basic tastes: salty, sour, sweet, bitter and umami. If there is a sixth taste for water, then we should be able to see evidence for it somewhere in the mouth or tongue. Yuki Oka and his colleagues have sought to solve the issue once and for all. They have thought up an experiment that seeks to identify any water sensing taste receptor cells (TRCs) on the tongues of lab mice.
The team first used a technique known as genetic knockout to silence different types of TRCs, in order to remove the possibility that those cells might accidentally discover some other taste within the water besides the water itself. They then flushed the rodents’ mouths with water to see if any cells were still responding. It turned out that the acid-sensing sour TRCs were still firing vigorously indicating these cells might have a double purpose, capable of distinguishing water or acidic fluids.
So if you are on the side of the debate that argues that water is flavorless, you might still be correct. But water isn’t senseless. At least it doesn’t appear that way according to this research. The study also opens up the possibility that our tongues and taste buds might be doing more than merely providing us with a sense of taste. If this study doesn’t prove that water is the sixth flavor, it might nonetheless be the first evidence of a whole other sense entirely: a water sense.
【1】Why is the question asked in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the main topic.
B.To show ordinary people’s puzzlement.

25、Scientists in Norway have some good news for coffee drinkers. Researchers have already found evidence that the drink or the beans can help with weight loss, ________ one's risk of developing some diseases, promote muscle growth, protect against certain types of cancers and can even reduce one's risk of premature(早于预期的) death, among many other________. Now it is said that a cup of ________ reduces physical pain.
The surprising finding is ________ a study involving 48 volunteers who agreed to spend 90-minutes performing computer tasks meant to finish office work. The tasks were known to ________ pain in the shoulders, neck, forearms and wrists. The researchers wanted to ________ how people with pain with those who were pain-free tolerated(忍受)the pain of such tasks. As a matter of convenience, the scientists allowed people to drink coffee before taking the test "to avoid ________ effects of caffeine lack, e.g. decreased vigor, sleepiness, and exhaustion." they reported.
When it came time to analyze the data, the researchers from Norway's National Institute of Occupational Health and Oslo University Hospital noticed that the 19 people who drank coffee reported a ________ intensity(强度)of pain than the 29 people who didn't. In the shoulders and neck, ________ the average pain was rated 41 (on a 100-point scale) among the coffee drinkers and 55 for the non-coffee drinkers. Similar gaps were found for all pain sites measured, and coffee's obvious pain-reduction effect ________.
However, the authors of the study, which was published this week in the journal, BMC Research Notes, warn that the results of the study come with many ________. For starters, the researchers don't know how much coffee the coffee drinkers consumed(消耗)before taking the computer tests. ________, they doubt whether the coffee drinkers and non-coffee drinkers were ________ in all aspects except for their coffee consumption. Problems like these tend to ________ the importance of the findings. But those doubts are ________ to trouble the coffee drinkers looking for any reason not to cut back on their daily caffeine habit.
