  • 21、The panda bear may be one of the world's cutest animals, but it also has one of the world's grossest habits:They like to spread horse dung(粪便) on their necks and faces and roll around in it to cover their entire bodies. Now, researchers say they have an explanation for these dung baths. The horse dung contains something that might help the animals deal with colder temperatures .

To get to the bottom of things, researchers analyzed 38 instances of dung rolling recorded by cameras at the reserve. The bears tended to roll in horse dung less than 10 days old. The dung contained natural compounds(化合物),called BCP and BCPO,that are scarce in older dung, say the scientists .

The team then added these compounds to the hay(草料) of pandas and found the animals favored the hay treated with these compounds. What's more, the pandas tended to roll in horse dung in colder weather, at temperatures between5℃and 15°C. Could BCP and BCPO help keep the giant pandas warm?

As giant pandas are a national treasure for China, there are strict limitations on conducting research on these protected animals, so the team turned to mice. Covering mice in a BCP-BCPO solution boosted the animals' cold tolerance, the authors report. Treated mice more readily walked on colder surfaces. The researchers discovered BCP-BCPO blocks receptors that sense cold.

“Although it's not concrete proof, the authors provided solid evidence to explain the unique behavior,”Fan Yang, a biophysicist at the Zhejiang University School of Medicine, wrote in an email.“The same receptors are present in many animals. So it is possible that using natural compounds to manage body temperature may actually be a general strategy widely adopted by other animals.”

Staying warm in the winter can be challenging for pandas,   notes Zejun Zhang, an ecologist at China West Normal University ,because their low-calorie diet of bamboo makes it hard to store extra fat. It's possible, the authors say, that pandas have used horse dung in this way for thousands of years.

    【1】What does the underlined word“grossest”Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.Funniest.

    B.Healthiest .

    A.By applying them to pandas.

    B.By experimenting them on mice.

    C.By analyzing pandas'dung rolling cases.

D.By experimenting on different kinds of dung.

【3】Why can BCP and BCPO help pandas against cold?

A.They adjust their sense of cold.

    B.They make them physically active.

    C.They provide a heat-trapping cover.

D.They help raise their body temperature .

【4】Which of the following makes pandas suffer in winter?

    A.Their body shape.

    B.Their body color.

    C.Their habitat.

    D.Their diet.

  • 22、The way we cook is important. In many countries, the two sources of heat used for cooking are natural gas and electric stoves. The World Health Organization(WHO) warns that millions of people are dying every year from indoor air pollution. The WHO finds that poor cooking, heating and lighting technologies are killing millions of people each year.

Indoor air pollution results from the use of dangerous fuels and cook stoves in the home. WHO officials say nearly three billion people are unable to use clean fuels and technologies for cooking, heating and lighting. And they say more than seven million people die from exposure to indoor or outdoor air pollution each year. Of that number, the WHO says about 4.3 million people die from household air pollution given off by simple biomass(生物燃料 and coal stoves.

These findings show that the home use of poisonous fuels is to blame for many of these deaths. These fuels include wood, coal, animal waste and so on. Carlos Dora is Coordinator in the WHO’s Department of Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health. He says people should not use unprocessed coal and kerosene(煤油 fuel indoors. He says opening a window or door to let out the harmful air will not correct the situation. It will only pollute the outdoors. “New technologies and clean fuels can rid people of this problem.”

The United Nations found that more than 95 percent of families in sub-Saharan Africa depend on solid fuels for cooking. It says huge populations in India, China and Latin American countries, such as Guatemala and Peru, are also at risk.

Nigel Bruce is a professor of Public Health at the University of Liverpool. He says researchers are developing good stoves and other equipment to burn fuels in a more efficient way. “There are already many technologies for clean fuels available now. An effective and reasonably low-cost ethanol(酒精 stove that is made by Dometic is now being tested out. Another interesting development is electric induction stoves.” In India, you can buy an induction stove for about $8. And in Africa you can buy a solar lamp for less than $1.

1How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?

    A. By making classifications.

    B. By listing numbers.

    C. By following time order.

    D. By describing a process.

2According to Carlos Dora, what is the best solution to indoor air pollution?

    A. People should use an effective air cleaner.

    B. People should open a window or door to let out the harmful air.

    C. People should use new technologies and clean fuels.

    D. People should prevent themselves from being exposed to harmful air.

3What can we learn from the passage?

    A. Most of the deaths from indoor pollution are in developing countries.

    B. Burning solid fuels can help limit indoor air pollution.

    C. People now can buy ethanol stoves made by Dometic in India.

    D. There are already two technologies for clean fuels available for use.

4Which would be the best title for the passage?

    A. The way we cook is changing

    B. Types of indoor air pollution

    C. The development of electric stoves

    D. Indoor air pollution kills millions each year

  • 24、What makes you happy? You may want to answer that spending time with your family, taking a vacation or driving a new sports car makes you happy but the key to happiness may be altruism (利他行为). Helping others may actually increase your happiness.

According to Time Magazine, the greatest thinkers in the world have suggested that true happiness is found in helping others and now there is scientific research from a team of psychologists at the University of Missouri-Columbia to prove it.

The researchers led by Liudmila Titova and Kennon Sheldon looked at whether pursuing happiness for others will actually make people happier. They found that it does.

Two experiments were conducted by the team, according to Psychology Today. In the first experiment there searchers asked participants to recall a time that they tried to make themselves or another person happy. They were asked to write about the event and rate how happy it made them feel.

In the second experiment, they were asked to remember a time they tried to make someone else happy and also write about how it made them feel. This experiment elicited a higher rate of happiness than the first.

“The results of these studies extend findings from previous research by showing that people gain more personal happiness from attempts to make other people happy—an approach that might seem unbelievable for a lot of people at first,” researchers wrote in the study.

But how does the research translate into real life? According to Time Magazine, find your passion. Give it to people or causes that move you and share your values. Whatever you do, the key is to finding an approach that works for you and let it come naturally. Remember that improving happiness is a benefit of helping others and not the goal.

【1】What makes people happy according to the first paragraph?

    A.Driving a new sports car.

    B.Travelling during a vacation.

    C.Offering generosity to others.

    D.Spending time with their family.

【2】How did the researchers prove their findings?

    A.By using examples.

    B.By making experiments.

    C.By clarifying a concept.

    D.By demonstrating facts.

【3】What does the underlined word “elicit” mean in paragraph 5?

    A.Produce.

    B.Improve.

    C.Display.

    D.Discover.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

    A.Pursuing Happiness for Others Counts
