22、   A deadly virus is spreading from state to state and has infected 26 million Americans so far, killing at least 14,000 people this season alone. It’s not a new pandemic (传染病) – it’s influenza.

The 2019-2020 flu season, which began September 29, is projected to be one of the worst in a decade, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. At least 250,000 people have been hospitalized with symptoms from the flu, and that number is predicted to climb as flu activity spreads quickly.

Dr. Nathan Chomilo, an assistant professor at University of Minnesota Medical School, said that the commonness of the flu often underplays its severity, but people should take it seriously.

The flu becomes dangerous when secondary infections emerge, the result of an already weakened immune system. Bacterial and viral infections worsen the flu’s symptoms. People with chronic illnesses are also at a heightened risk for flu complications.

Those complications include pneumonia(肺炎), inflammation in the heart and brain and organ failure – which, in some cases, can be deadly.

Influenza is tricky because the virus changes every year. Sometimes, the dominant strain in a flu season will be more virulent than in previous years, which can impact the number of people infected and the severity of their symptoms.

Most of these changes in the virus are small and insignificant, a process called antigenic drift. That year’s flu vaccine is mostly effective in protecting patients in spite of these small changes.

Occasionally, the flu undergoes a rare antigenic shift, which results when a completely new strain of virus emerges that human bodies haven’t experienced before.

This flu season, there’s no sign of antigenic shift, the most extreme change. But it’s happened before, most recently in 2009 with the H1N1 virus. It became a pandemic because people had no immunity against it, the CDC reported.

The study led by Hrag Pailian, a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, required the parrot to compete in the shell game against 21 adults and 216-to 8-year-old children. The popular game involves hiding a small object under one of three or more upside-down cups, which are moved around. Participants are required to accurately identify the cup under which the object lies.

The Harvard team began by placing different-colored pom-poms under four cups and moving them around. To make the task more challenging, the researchers required participants to track two, three, and four pom-poms at the same time. The cup positions we removed between zero to four times for each of the combinations.

An analysis of the results showed that Griffin outperformed the children across all levels on average. Even more impressive, the “bird brain” performed as well as, or slightly better, than the 21 Harvard students on12 of the 14 trials! It was only in the final two tests, which had the most pom-poms and most movement that the parrot fell behind the adults. However, Griffin’s performance never dropped below that of the children.

The fun experiment was part of a study conducted to test the brain’s ability to keep memories of things that are no longer in view and then updating them when faced with new information, like a change in location. The cognitive system, known as visual working memory, is one of the foundations for intelligent behavior.

24、   England and Wales launched a COVID-19 smartphone app on Thursday, allowing users to trace contacts, check the local level of risk and record visits to venues such as pubs, four months after the technology was promised to the public. The NHS COVID-19 app comes as Britain preparation for a second wave of infections, with daily case numbers rising at rates not seen since the peak of the pandemic (流行病) and a testing system unable to cope with demand in many areas.

The government had said a COVID-19 app would arrive in May, but early tests were disturbed by problems. As the delay lengthened, the government downplayed the importance of smartphones in fighting COVID-19, saying that rather than an app being central to the test and trace system, it was “the cherry on the cake”.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, however, said that with infection rates rising, every tool available must be used to prevent spreading, including the latest technology. “We have worked extensively with tech companies, international partners, and privacy and medical experts—  and learned from the trials — to develop an app that is secure, simple to use and will help keep our country safe,” he said.

The app uses Bluetooth signals to log when a user is in close contact with another user, generally meaning within two meters for 15 minutes or more. If someone then tests positive for COVID-19, they can choose to share the result anonymously with their close contacts, who will each receive a warning and will have to isolate (隔离) for 14 days. The app generates a random ID for each user to protect privacy, and matches cases on the device rather than on a central server, as was the case in the first iteration. It will also enable users to book a COVID- 19 test subject to availability, check symptoms, and register at venues using a QR-type bar code displayed by businesses.

What I think of boxing as a sport

Boxing is a popular sport that many people seem to be fascinated by. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. Professional boxers earn a lot of money, and successful boxers are treated as big heroes.

It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer, and this gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves. Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer, moreover because the boxer comes from their own country, and if“their”boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feeling of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them an outlet for this aggression.

However , there is a negative side to boxing. It can be a very dangerous sport. Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxing even have to wear helmets, there have frequently been accident in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences. Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring. For example, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing, in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.

To conclude, I am personally not at all in favour of aggressive sports like boxing. I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV, and we celebrated more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes and heroines in our society. I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports , and so do I, but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.
