四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved reading crime and detective (侦探) novels, so I guess it was pretty normal that I started writing them when I was older.

However, my family is very big on having a traditional career  (职业)  and so when I said that I wanted to go to college and study writing, my parents told me that I couldn’t. They told me that I had to study for a degree so that I would achieve a career, and not something as risky as writing.

I suppose I could have studied journalism (新闻) ,but I didn’t want to lose interest in writing because it would be something I would do every day for work, not for pleasure.

I thought that teaching looked like a pretty good compromise (妥协 ) , especially because of the long holidays.

It was a good choice: by the time I was twenty-fiveI’d already finished two novels and had an agent. To be honest, I never meant to keep my being a crime writer a secret or anything, and my friends have always known. One of the reasons most people don’t know is because my agent told me that my name Hazel sounded too much like a romance  (浪漫)  novelist for older women. She suggested Brooke Lane and I thought, “Well, if you think it’ll make me successful, okay,”

I’d totally forgotten about it until I walked into school one day and saw one of my workmates reading my novel. I asked her some questions about it, and it was so clear that she had no idea that I’d written it - she even offered to lend it to me after she’d finished!

Of course, sometimes I wonder what my students would think if they knew that their teacher was going home on the weekend to write about murders and dead bodies, but I think my parents probably did me a favor: my teaching job keeps me in touch with the real world.

    1Hazel is probably

A.an agent B.a journalist C.a teacher and artist D.a teacher and writer

2The underlined words “is very big on ” in the passage most probably mean .

A.to give no advice B.to like something very much

C.to have more experiences D.to misunderstand something

    3It’s clear that Hazel .

A.agreed to study journalism for a degree

B.accepted Brooke Lane as her pen name

C.would like to write something for teaching

D.told her workmates about her writing novels

4We can infer from the passage that   .

A.Hazel likes showing off in public

B.Hazel’s students all want to write novels

C.Hazel’s agent has played a role in her success

D.older women prefer the name Brooke to Hazel

  • 27、   Researchers have recently discovered how to make families work, more successfully. A surprising idea has appeared: the single most important thing you can do for your family, it seems, is to develop a family story.

I first heard this idea in the mid1990s. from Marshall Duke, a professor at Emory University. Duke was studying stories in families when his wife, a children's learning specialist, made a discovery: “The students. who know a lot about their families will do better when they face challenges (挑战),”Sara said.

Interested, Duke set out to test her conclusion. He and Emory workmate Robyn Fivush developed a method called the “Do You Know?" degree that asked children to answer 20 questions such as: Do you know where your grandparents grew up? Do you know where your mum and dad went to high school? Do you know about an illness or something really terrible that happened in your family?

Duke and Fivush asked those questions to members of four dozen families in 2001. They then compared the children's results with a group of psychological (心理学的) tests the children had taken and reached a conclusion that agreed to Sara's theory. The more children knew about their families' histories, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their selfrespect, and the more successfully they believed their families worked from generation to generation (代代传承).

“We were really surprised," Duke said. The researchers mentioned the children after the terrible events of September 11, 2001. “Once again," Duke said, “the ones who knew more about their families proved to be stronger."

Why does knowing where her grandmother went to school help a child overcome something terrible and difficult? Duke said that children who have the most self-confidence have what he calls “a 'strong intergenerational self". They know that they come from something bigger than themselves.

Duke suggested that parents do the same activities with their children again and again. Any kind of activities work to teach the sense of history: holidays, vacations, big family get-togethers, even a drive to the shop. “These traditions become part of your family,” Duke said.

Years of research have showed that most happy families also communicate successfully, but it's not simply a matter of talking through problems. Talking also means telling a positive (正面的) story about yourselves. When faced with a challenge, happy families, like happy people, just add a new chapter () to their life story that helps them overcome the difficulty. This skill is very important for children when they are growing up.

The bottom lines: if you want a happier family, create, refine and retell the story of your family's best moments and your relations' ability to overcome difficulty. That act alone may prove the fact that your family will thrive (兴旺) for many generations to come.

1What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Happy children are usually brought up in happy families.

B.Our family is the most important place to teach children.

C.There are many things for the young to learn from the old.

D.Family history plays an important part when children grow up.

2What can the “Do you know?" degree tell us?

A.What relation in one's family is. B.What story one's family has had.

C.How much one knows his family. D.How much one loves his family.

3Which of the following is true, according to the passage?

A.The event of September 11, 2001 helped Duke reach his conclusion.

B.Duke thinks that a strong intergenerational self is very important.

C.Duke and Sara's research work led us to an unexpected conclusion.

D.According to Duke, positive talks will add new chapters to one's life.
