  • 24、   A Chinese man brought his favorite dishes reganmian (热干面) and hot pot to Rovaniemi, Finland. He became the first Chinese to open a restaurant in the Arctic Circle (北极圈).

Hu Liang, from Central Chinas Hubei Province, moved to Finland after graduation at 21. For the last twelve years, he has seen more and more Chinese tourists visiting the country to enjoy the winter holidays.

“Chinese people are becoming richer and more international. What has not changed is their stomachs. So I made the decision to open the restaurant,” said Hu.

Hu’s restaurant serves reganmian, a traditional Wuhan noodle, as well as Chinese hot pot. He orders ingredients (原料) from China online and offers e-payment which is popular among Chinese people such as Alipay.

At a price of $18.45, a bowl of reganmian is not only great comfort for Chinese tourists who have traveled from thousands of miles away, but it also appeals to local Finns.

In Rovaniemi, with a population of around 60,000, Hu receives more than 300 guests in the peak season (最繁忙的季节) to offer people a “hot” experience in the cold, snowy land.

  • 25、One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese student of English, “You speak very good English.” But the student answered, “NO, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the Chinese student had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the Chinese student sill kept saying “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know what to say.

What’s wrong with the student’s answer? He didn’t accept a compliment(赞美词)in the same way as the American people do. He should answer “thank you” instead of “no”. He really understood what the American boy had said, but he thought he should be modest(谦虚的).In the west, people will feel proud and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say “Thank you”. If someone says to a woman “You look so beautiful with the new clothes on.” She must be very happy and answer “Thank you”.

In our country we think being modest is a virtue(美德)and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not mean being proud, so  sometimes you should be confident instead of being modest.

If you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well” while working in a western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down upon by others. If asking for a job, one says something like “Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try”, he or she will expect to get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence!

【1】 Why was the American boy surprised at the Chinese student’s answer?

    A. Because he was expecting the Chinese student to say “Thank you”.

    B. Because he wouldn’t like others to say “No”.

    C. Because he could hardly hear what the student had said.

    D. Because he wondered whether the student could really speak good English.

【2】As the student kept saying “No”, the American boy ________.

    A. became disappointed B. didn’t know what to say

    C. lost his interest D. got angry

【3】In the west, if you meet a friend who wears a really beautiful dress, you may say “________”.

    A. Where do you buy it?

    B. Could you give me your dress?

    C. How beautiful you are today!

    D. I want a dress like yours very much.

【4】 Why does a man in the west who asks for a job say something like “Yes, I can certainly do it”?

    A. Because he is not modest.

    B. Because he is confident and he wants to get the job.

    C. Because he just wants to try.

    D. Because he can do nothing but speak in that way.

【5】We can learn that the writer wants us to ________ through his passage.

    A. be modest B. be confident

    C. be clever  D. be beautiful

  • 26、In America, when the eighth-graders leave the middle school, they are often worried about moving to the high school. It is a hard time for them, but it can be an exciting one as well. To make it easier, students need to get familiar with their school.

Even though they’ve done this already in the middle school, it’s still important to find where their classrooms are. Most schools take students to the high school for a visit at the end of their eighth grade year. And, most schools also have a freshman(新生) speech for parents and students before the first year begins. Sometimes the main office will give away a map of the school. This can help students and parents to find different places in the school.

One way to know your high school more and make new friends is to join a club or play a sport. Schools often offer chances to join different clubs and sports. Fall activities begin in August before the first day of school. If you are not interested in sports, there are clubs for any interest, such as drama, dance, chess, photography, community service, etc.

Students from different grades are allowed to join these clubs. By joining an activity, students can find new friendships, not to mention improving their chances in future college applications(申请). The school office will have a list of activities offered at the school and information on how to join them.

What’s more, to have a great start to a high school year, students can write down some of their worries, and ask for help from teachers and school workers.

    D. There are fewer students from higher grades in the school clubs.

3When do many schools take students to visit their new high school?

    B. Right after the high school year starts.

  • 27、Depression (抑郁症) is a serious problem today. One expert says that depression is like cancer because it is “widespread, costly and deadly”. Depression hits one person in five around the world.

Although people have believed depression to be a problem among the rich and educated, studies shows that depression among everyone. Over any six-month period, between five to seven percent of the world’s population will be suffering from a serious depression.

A recent research shows that the more teenagers watch television, the more likely they are to develop depression as young adults.

The researchers used a nationwide long-term survey of teenage health to investigate the relationship between media (传媒) use and depression. They based their findings on more than four thousand teenagers who were not depressed when the survey began in 2000.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how often they played computer games and listened to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and a half hours a day. More than two hours of that was spent watching TV.

Seven years later, in 2007, more than seven percent of the young people had signs of depression. The average age at that time was twenty-one.

The researchers say they did not find any such relationship with the use of other media such as movies, video games of radio etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight percent increase in the chances of developing signs of depression. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount (总量) of media use.

The study didn’t explore if watching TV causes depression. But one possibility is that it was taking time away from activities that could help prevent depression.

Last December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spend less time watching television than unhappy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, to take part in religious services and to be volunteers.
